Abstract

The aim of the present study is: 1) to explore the quality of teachers’ understanding about science literacy in biology; 2) to explore inhibiting and supporting factors of the quality teachers’ understanding for science literacy in biology; and 3) to suggest solutions to enhance the understanding of science literacy for biology teachers. The present study involved biology teachers and the deputy principal for curriculum of MAN 1 South Konawe. The present study is a qualitative study involving a survey with questionnaires to measure the quality of understanding of the biology teachers in terms of biology science literacy. The data analysis involves: 1) analyzing initial interview data (collection, reduction, data display, conclusion); 2) testing data validity (through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation). The result shows that: 1) the quality of the teachers’ understanding for the science  literacy in biology is interpreted based on the following indicators including the reinforcement of competence with the percentage of 36.36% which falls to into moderate category, and the support and follow-up for the development programs for literacy capability which falls into low category, accounting for 14.29%; 2) inhibiting and supporting factors for the quality of teachers’ understanding about biology science literacy is interpreted based on a number of indicators: a) both inhibiting and supporting internal factors that facilitate the implementation of science literacy-based learning, having the same influence by 50% respectively; b) external factors supporting the implementation science literacy-based learning having moderate influence of 40%, and the inhibiting external factor categorized moderate influence with the percentage of 60%; 3) Suggestions to improve the understanding of science literacy for biology teachers based on the inhibiting factors are to organize special science literacy-based activities, to create forum meetings with science literacy materials, to procure  digital libraries and virtual laboratories, as well to propose various activities budgeted and disbursed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of South Konawe. The findings suggest that developing science literacy at MAN 1 South Konawe is essential for its teachers and school’s own important significance in carrying out the biology lessons.

Abstract

The present study aims to: 1) interpret the influence of the inquiry learning model on students' biology learning outcomes; 2) interpret the implementation of each stage of the inquiry learning model. The present study is quantitative research using a quasi-experimental design, which was carried out at SMA Negeri 2 South Konawe. The research samples were grade X MIPA1 students as the experimental class and grade X MIPA3 students as the control class. The data collection technique for this research is tests that were analyzed descriptively and inferentially, as well as observations to interpret the implementation of the inquiry learning model. The results show that: 1) the inquiry learning model has a positive effect on the biology learning outcomes of grade X students on the ecosystem material. The inquiry learning model has an effective effect of 74.82% in learning activities and 25.18% is influenced by other variables which are not examined in this research, so the model is categorized as quite effective; 2) the inquiry learning model applied to grade X ecosystem material has difficulties in learning activities, namely difficulties in orienting the material and formulating problems. The biggest difficulty faced by the teacher is collecting data and drawing conclusions, which is caused by the teacher’s lack of ability to organize the learning time.

Abstract

The present study aims to: 1) interpret the role of laboratories in science learning and 21st-century academic skills; 2) evaluate the effectiveness of laboratories use with cookbook and inquiry-based science learning in improving students' 21st-century thinking skills. The study was conducted using a narrative literature review method, which involves independently collecting, reviewing, and synthesizing various previous studies in the library and journal house of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung and other reputable sources. The data sources are references (e.g. books and journal articles) from reputable publishers. The results indicate that: 1) the laboratory use with the cookbook method provides structured and easy-to-follow experimental procedures, while with the inquiry method, it encourages students' independent exploration and problem solving; 2) the combination of these two methods can strengthen conceptual understanding and basic laboratory techniques, as well as develop students' critical thinking skills, creativity, collaboration, and digital literacy. The implications of the present study are the need to integrate the cookbook and inquiry methods in the science curriculum to prepare students to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

The present study aims to develop, validate, and analyze teacher's and students' responses to a product of electronic-student worksheets (i.e. elektronik-Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik or e-LKPD) which are integrated with Islamic values on a biology subject at grade VIII regarding the topic of human respiratory system. This research was carried out in two different places, namely at the Biology Study Program of IAIN Metro where the e-LKPD product was designed by the researchers and was validated by material experts and media experts at the university, and at SMP Negeri 1 Way Jepara to test the e-LKPD product (on a teacher and a small group of students). The present study is a development study using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation. and evaluation stages. The results show: 1) the e-LKPD integrated with Islamic values at the learning topic of human respiratory system involves an understanding of the organs, mechanisms and disorders that occur in the human respiratory system which is connected and viewed from Islamic principles (application of Islamic moral and ethical values within the act of breathing); 2) The results of the validity test for the material aspect of the e-LKPD were 86% which is categorized as very good meaning the material can be placed on the e-LKPD template that was to developed; 3) The results of the validity test for the aspect of the e-LKPD media were 90% which is categorized as very good allowing the e-LKPD media arrangement to be firmly established; 4) The teacher's response to the e-LKPD being developed was 93% which is categorized as very feasible, and the students'  response to the e-LKPD being developed was 94% which is categorized as very practical, implying that the e-LKPD materials and its media are already suited to the needs of the learning process, so it can be concluded that the developed e-LKPD integrated with Islamic values can be used in the biology learning activities at grade VIII about the human respiratory system.

Abstract

This research aims to: 1) interpret the influence of the Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) learning model on the science learning outcomes of grade VII students on the learning topic of the nature of science and scientific methods; 2) interpret the implementation of each stage of the SETS learning model. The present study is quantitative research carried out at SMP Negeri 15 Kendari from August to September 2023. The research sample included grade VII1 students as the control class and grade VII2 as the experimental class. The data collection technique for this research is tests that are analyzed descriptively and inferentially, as well as observations, to interpret the implementation of the SETS learning model. The results show that: 1) hypothesis test results show that the value of tcalculated is 98.96 > ttable 1.67 , so it can be concluded that the SETS learning model influences students' science learning outcomes in the nature of science and scientific method material; 2) the teacher and student experienced difficulties when the SETS learning model was applied to the topic of nature of science and scientific methods at the stages of invitation, concept introduction, application and evaluation, yet, they did not experience difficulties at the exploration stage.
