Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of existentialist feminism in the film Ambu directed by Farid Dermawan, using Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism theory and Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative structure theory. Ambu was chosen because it portrays the conflict between women and customary traditions in the Baduy community, focusing on the struggle of the main character, Fatma, in defining her own existence. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis techniques based on visual and verbal narratives in the film. The findings show that Fatma is positioned as the Other, yet she actively rejects this position through free and conscious actions. She is portrayed as an independent woman, owning a catering business, thinking critically, and taking full responsibility for her daughter's future even when gravely ill. The three key concepts in existentialist feminism the Other, freedom, and transcendence are clearly reflected in Fatma’s life journey. Additionally, the narrative structure of the film follows Todorov’s five-stage model, starting from initial equilibrium to a new balance achieved after conflict and reconciliation between mother and daughter. This study concludes that Ambu successfully represents the struggle of women to become free and responsible subjects amidst social and cultural pressure.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe the forms of masculinity in the drama script Ayahku Pulang by Usmar Ismail, and (2) explain its utilization as teaching material in literature learning at Vocational High Schools (SMK). This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The data sources include the drama script Ayahku Pulang, Indonesian language teachers, and students. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. Data were collected through document analysis and in-depth interviews. To test the validity of the data, triangulation was applied. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model. This research adopts Janet Saltzman Chafetz’s theory of masculinity as the analytical framework. The findings show that the drama script Ayahku Pulang contains seven aspects of masculinity as outlined by Chafetz, namely physical, functional, sexual, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, and other personal traits. Each of these aspects is strongly represented through the main characters, especially Raden Saleh and Gunarto, who portray various social and psychological dynamics of being male within a family context. Furthermore, the interview results indicate that the script has great potential to be used as teaching material in SMK, as it is relevant to the students’ daily lives and includes gender awareness that supports the holistic development of students' character. Therefore, the use of the Ayahku Pulang script in literature learning is expected not only to strengthen students’ literary literacy skills but also to foster empathy, social understanding, and critical thinking about gender equality issues in society

Abstract

This study discusses speech acts and expressive speech functions in the Mata Najwa program on the Youtube channel as a form of digital communication based on video streaming. The background of the study is based on the phenomenon of the increasing use of digital media as a means of conveying public opinion, including in the form of critical discussions on social media and online channels. The Mata Najwa program was chosen because it consistently presents speakers from various backgrounds who are actively involved in social, political, and legal discussions, thus allowing the emergence of various types of speech acts, especially expressive speech. This study aims to describe the types of speech acts and analyze the forms and functions of expressive speech that appear in verbal interactions between speakers. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with listening, note-taking, and recording techniques. Data in the form of speech transcripts were collected from four episodes of Mata Najwa which were considered to contain expressive and socially relevant verbal interactions. The results of the study showed that locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary utterances were found consistently in each episode, while the dominant forms of expressive utterances included criticizing, sarcasm, praise, complaining, apologizing, and expressing gratitude. These utterances not only function as a means of emotional expression and personal attitudes, but also as a tool of social influence that can shape public opinion and strengthen criticism of current issues. Thus, this study concludes that the Mata Najwa program is not only a medium for entertainment and information, but also plays a role as a public communication forum that is full of pragmatic values and is relevant to be analyzed in linguistic and social contexts.
