Abstract

This study aims to determine the drama script writing abilities of SMPN 35 Medan class VIII students using both conventional direct instruction learning models, circuit learning models, and knowing the effect of differences in the use of direct instruction learning models and circuit learning models on the drama script writing skills of class VIII students at SMPN 35 Medan. The two-group post-test design experiment approach was employed in this study. Only SMPN 35 Medan class VIII pupils made up the study's population. For the 2023–2024 academic year, SMPN 35 Medan will have 256 class VIII students spread over 8 classes. The research sample consisted of 32 students from class VIII-5 which was the experiment class and 32 students from class VIII-7 which was the control class, out of the 256 students. Interviews, observation, and objective description exams were used as study instruments. The average score for students in the experimental class who wrote drama scripts was 81.44, falling into the good category, according to the research results. In contrast, students in the control class scored an average of 57.06, falling into the adequate category but still failing to meet the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) namely 75. The significance level settings of α= 0.05 and n= 32 yielded ttable= 2.039 based on the t test. The alternative hypothesis Ha is accepted and the null hypothesis H0 is rejected if it can be shown that tcount > ttable, that is, 10.174>2.039. This demonstrates that the writing skills of class VIII students at SMPN 35 Medan for drama scripts fluctuate significantly depending on whether the direct instruction learning model or the circuit learning model is used. This indicates that class VIII students at SMPN 35 Medan are more influenced by circuit learning models when it comes to their ability to write drama scripts.

Abstract

Project based Learning (PjBL) has been successful and effective in improving various skills. Numerous studies have shown the success of PjBL. This research used content analysis on several articles that have been published in indexed scopus journals from 2019 to 2022, with PjBL as the main focus of research. The study reveals that the number of publications focusing on PjBL has increased in the past three years. Among those publications, the most dominant research design is quantitative. In addition, practical language classes are the most targeted subject and material. Serial tests and t-tests are the most common instruments used and data analysis methods. In connection with the findings of this research, some recommendations have been proposed for future research to focus on PjBL. Some of these recommendations include increasing the diversity of research types and choosing more appropriate data analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze grammatical cohesion in the form of references in three short stories from the October 2017 edition of Kompas: Sepucuk Amplop di Taman (Envelope in the Garden), Tanah Warisan Asal (Ancestral Heritage Land), and Toko Wong (Wong's Shop). The study focused on the types of grammatical references, such as personal and demonstrative references, used to establish coherence and coherence in the text. A qualitative descriptive approach was used based on the KORTARA corpus (Nusantara Referential Language Corpus) to identify and classify reference forms and their frequency. The analysis showed that the most dominant type of reference was the first-person singular "aku," which strengthens the narrator's position in the story. Meanwhile, demonstrative references such as "ini," "itu," "sini," and "kini" also support the spatial and temporal context of the narrative. This study demonstrates that the use of references not only serves to maintain clarity of reference in the text but also plays a crucial role in forming a cohesive narrative structure. By examining grammatical cohesion through a corpus approach, this research contributes to linguistic studies and Indonesian language teaching, particularly in understanding the interrelationships between sentences in literary discourse. This research also opens up opportunities for further studies examining grammatical cohesion in various other text genres, such as news, essays, or academic texts.

Abstract

Ancient manuscripts are cultural heritage assets that record past civilizations, knowledge systems, and beliefs of earlier societies. In Indonesia, several ethnic groups still preserve traditional manuscripts written in various indigenous scripts such as Bugis, Balinese, Javanese, Sundanese, Lampung, and Batak scripts. Batak manuscripts are known to contain traditional knowledge, including medicinal formulas, mystical practices, calendrical calculations, and prophecies. This study focuses on identifying the manuscript Pagar Tawar Sitahan Rasun (Inventory No. 1226/07.135), a collection housed at the North Sumatra Provincial Museum. The research applies a philological approach using a qualitative descriptive method to identify the manuscript’s physical and textual characteristics. The findings reveal eighteen essential elements of manuscript identity, including: (1) title, (2) inventory number, (3) storage location, (4) origin, (5) physical condition, (6) dimensions, (7) thickness, (8) number of lines per page, (9) script and writing type, (10) writing technique, (11) writing material, (12) text format, (13) estimated age, (14) language, (15) author (if known), (16) historical background, (17) social function, and (18) content summary. These findings contribute to the initial effort in preserving Batak manuscripts and provide a foundation for further studies on the cultural values contained within them
