Abstract

This study examines changes in mangrove forest area in Bogak Besar Village, Teluk Mengkudu District, between 2017 and 2022 and identifies the factors driving these changes. Data were collected through field observations, documentation, remote sensing, and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis and interpreted using a qualitative descriptive approach. The results indicate a significant decline and conversion of mangrove areas into oil palm plantations, mixed plantations, aquaculture ponds, settlements, and open land. These changes were primarily driven by anthropogenic activities and economic factors, particularly the perception that mangrove forests provide lower economic value than alternative land uses. The findings highlight economic pressure as a major driver of mangrove land-use conversion in the study area.
