Abstract

The aim of this study was to what extent language learning strategies used by students give an impact on their English academic achievement. The instrument of the research was achievement test and interview. The intention of the researchers to take the achievement test was to find out English academic achievement of learners (English grade) in second semester academic year 2019/2020. The second instrument for gathering data concerning students’ strategies was semi-structured interview. In conclusion, 45 % of the variance in the English academic achievement of IPA 1 students can be explained by the language learning strategies used, while 57 % the variance of the English academic achievement of IPA 2 students can described by the LLS employed.

Abstract

This research intended to analyze factors of students’ lack of self confidence in speaking English. It was also aimed to present possible strategies used to overcome students’ lack of self confidence in speaking English. The type of this research was qualitative. This research was conducted in SMA Negeri 4 BauBau. This research focused on obtaining data from the English teacher and students at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 4 BauBau in the academic year 2018/2019 as the subjects of the research. In collecting data, the researchers used observation, interview. The technique used in analyzing data were three steps, those were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that the factors which cause students’ lack of self confidence were anxiety, shyness, fear of making mistakes, and lack of vocabulary. Meanwhile, the possible strtaegies to overcome students’ lack of self confidence in speaking English were lowering students’ anxiety in classroom, improving students’ vocabulary, boosting students’ self-confidence, and forming group discussion.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to find out the correlation of students’ self-efficacy and their speaking performance. A self-efficacy questionnaire and a measure of speaking performance tests were administered to 95 learners of Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University. The data analysis revealed that there is a significant correlation between the students’ speaking self efficacy and their speaking performance. The probability value of speaking self efficacy is 0.001. Because p < 0.05 then Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It can be concluded that students’ speaking self-efficacy and speaking performance denoted a positive correlation.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the english teachers strategies to increase the students motivation in learning english. This research used descriptive qualitative research method. Sources of data in this research are the English teacher and the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Lasalimu. Instruments used in this research were observation and interview. In validating the data, the researcher used data source by comparing the result of observation and interview. This research is analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of data analysis including reducing the data, displaying the data and taking conclusion and verification. The result of the research showed that the strategies used by the teacher in motivating students to learn English at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 2 lasalimu are giving praise, giving suggestion, and playing motivation videos. Because by this technique it can attract the attention of students in teaching, students do not get bored quickly, more enthusiasm in learning English and increase knowledge they have. The strategies to increase motivation given by the English teacher to the students were extrinsic motivation (based on the source of motivation) in teaching English as media to arouse students of reaching the goal.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Lasalimu through local stories. This study used a pre-experimental design. The sample in this study were students of class VIII, amounting to 14 students. The instrument used in this study was a test. The results obtained are: 1) the pretest results obtained an average value of 43.21 and the posttest obtained an average value of 66.07%; 2) based on the results of hypothesis testing, sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 <0.05, so it can be concluded that Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted. Therefore the use of regional folklore has a positive influence on vocabulary mastery of students in class VIII SMP Negeri 3 Lasalimu in the 2018/2019 academic year.
