Abstract

The objective of the study is to discover: (1) types of errors that the students have committed; (2) the obstacles that the students have dealt with; and (3) the size of the errors that the students have committed. The nature of the study is qualitative and quantitative research. Then, within the conduct of the study, the research site was the Angkasa Adisucipto Junior High School located in Janti Street, Adisucipto Air Base, Caturtunggal, Depok, Yogyakarta. The subjects within the study were the students from Grade IX A, Grade IX B and Grade IX C from the Angkasa Adiscucipto Junior High School Yogyakarta. The data were gathered by using test administration, questionnaire distribution and documentation study. Then, the instruments that had been implemented within the conduct of the study were the essay test instrument and the questionnaire. The results of the study show that the errors that the Grade IX students from Angkasa Adisucipto Junior High School in completing the materials of Quadratic Equation from the perspective of conceptual understanding are namely: (1) the students have not correctly formulated the mathematical concepts by using the appropriate symbol or language; (2) the students have committed errors in composing the theorem or formula (whereas it has not been demand-ed in the test items); (3) the students have committed errors in composing the ABC formula when they are completing the test items; and (4) the students have not composed the theorem or the formula for completing the test items. Then, the five biggest obstacles in learning the materials of Quadratic Equation are namely: (1) classroom (64.06%); (2) students’ capacity (46.25%); (3) material delivery (30.07%); (4) students’ attitude and interest toward the materials of Quadratic Equation (29.24%); and (5) students’ motivation (25.78%).

Abstract

Skills required by pupils for the 21st century differ from what was required twenty years back. The results of the 21st century concentrates on the abilities and knowledge pupils must learn to be successful in college, life and work. In order to do this, pupils should be taught to master critical thinking skills. The effective way is by including modelling in their syllabus. In mathematics learning, mathematical modelling deals with modelling and application in mathematics teaching, characterising pupils’ modelling abilities and application of modelling activities toward building their competencies. In this study, seventy fifth grade pupils from a school in Selangor, Malaysia, were chosen as the participants. Quantitative approach was used in this study. These pupils were selected using convenience sampling procedure. Open ended tasks based on some real-world problems were given to the pupils. Their answers were assessed using a rubric score table. The scores ranged from 1 to 3 and there was explanation in each score to give marks to their answers. descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance (Ancova) were used for answering the research questions. The findings showed that the pupils in the experimental group performed very well in their modelling task whereas pupils in the control group could not perform well in the modelling task.

Abstract

A five-compartment epidemiological model is analyzed to illustrate the dynamics of infectious diseases. In this model, the population is compartmented into susceptible, latent, infected, post-infection, and recovered. The model is a system of ordinary differential equations, where the stability is analyzed using Routh’s stability criterion. Two equilibrium points; disease-free and endemic equilibrium are stable but depends on the basic reproduction number. Derivation of the basic reproduction number is given using the next-generation method. This study ended by providing a case study of measles outbreaks before the effective implementation of the vaccine. The analysis of data fitting is done by using the Simulated Annealing minimization routine and the error value is 0.0406.

Abstract

The case of unsteady two-dimensional laminar free convection flow over a vertical plate by an incompressible viscous fluid is analysed in the presence of uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the flow. The governing equations in a vector form are transformed into non-dimensional form. Then, the dimensionless equations are solved using automated solution technique which is FEniCS. The effects of magnetic parameter on the velocity and temperature profiles are obtained and discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Derivatives are one of the objects of calculus that is difficult for students to learn. The purpose of this study was to describe the cognitive processes of students in understanding the application of derivatives. This is a qualitative research involving one subject with the initials L. The main instrument of this research is the researcher who is guided by an assignment sheet and an interview guide. Data collection was carried out through task-based interviews. To get complete and accurate data recorded through audiovisual. Data were analyzed descriptively through genetic decomposition based on APOS (action-process-object-schema) theory. The results of this study are that L can coordinate the process-object of all the properties of a given function, with adjacent or overlapping intervals in all h domains so that a mature scheme of function graph sketches is formed. So that an accurate function graph sketch is obtained. The conclusion is that L's cognitive process of applying derivatives is at a high level. It's a trance level.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of relational elementary students in understanding the concept of real numbers. This research is an exploration of the research subject. The subjects of this study were students of MIN 2 Bengkulu Selatan. There is one realistic student in this research. The researcher is the main instrument in this research which is supported by an interview guide and an assignment sheet on the concept of real numbers. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study are that students with relational abilities can combine separate pieces of information to produce the completion of a task. Therefore it is suggested to teachers and researchers of mathematics education to explore students' mathematical cognitive processes before determining the learning strategies to be carried out.
