Abstract

Derivatives are one of the objects of calculus that is difficult for students to learn. The purpose of this study was to describe the cognitive processes of students in understanding the application of derivatives. This is a qualitative research involving one subject with the initials L. The main instrument of this research is the researcher who is guided by an assignment sheet and an interview guide. Data collection was carried out through task-based interviews. To get complete and accurate data recorded through audiovisual. Data were analyzed descriptively through genetic decomposition based on APOS (action-process-object-schema) theory. The results of this study are that L can coordinate the process-object of all the properties of a given function, with adjacent or overlapping intervals in all h domains so that a mature scheme of function graph sketches is formed. So that an accurate function graph sketch is obtained. The conclusion is that L's cognitive process of applying derivatives is at a high level. It's a trance level.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of relational elementary students in understanding the concept of real numbers. This research is an exploration of the research subject. The subjects of this study were students of MIN 2 Bengkulu Selatan. There is one realistic student in this research. The researcher is the main instrument in this research which is supported by an interview guide and an assignment sheet on the concept of real numbers. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study are that students with relational abilities can combine separate pieces of information to produce the completion of a task. Therefore it is suggested to teachers and researchers of mathematics education to explore students' mathematical cognitive processes before determining the learning strategies to be carried out.

Abstract

Non-Euclidean Geometry is a complex subject for students. It is necessary to analyze the weaknesses of Euclidean geometry to provide a basis for thinking about the need for learning non-Euclidean geometry. The starting point of learning must be close to students' local minds and culture. The purpose of this study is to describe the weaknesses of Euclidean geometry as a step in analyzing the needs of non-Euclidean geometry learning through an ethnomathematics approach. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The subjects of this study were students of Mathematics Education at State Islamic University (UIN) Fatmawati Soekarno Bengkulu, Indonesia. The researcher acts as a lecturer and the main instrument in this research. Researchers used a spatial ability test instrument to explore qualitative data. The data were analyzed qualitatively descriptively. The result of this research is that there are two weaknesses of Euclidean geometry, namely Euclid’s attempt to define all elements in geometry, including points, lines, and planes. Euclid defined a point as one that has no part. He defined a line as length without width. The words "section", "length", and "width" are not found in Euclidean Geometry. In addition, almost every part of Euclid’s proof of the theorem uses geometric drawings, but in practice, these drawings are misleading. Local culture and ethnomathematics approach design teaching materials and student learning trajectories in studying Non-Euclid Geometry.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstrak. Pyhtagoras' Theorem is a very important principle in mathematics, but many elementary students find it difficult to understand it. Therefore, this study aims to describe the quality of student responses in finding the Pythagorean formula. It is a descriptive-qualitative study to obtain a collection of students' thought processes and actions. The research subjects were selected based on their abstraction characteristics which could be classified into five groups. They are pre-structural, unistructural, multistructural, relational and extended-abstract. Students who become research subjects are elementary school students in Bengkulu City, Indonesia. The subjects of this study were twenty five people. The research instrument is the researcher himself who is guided by student assignments. Task-based interviews were applied to collect complete data. It is data collection using audio-visual recording. This data collection technique ensures that the data collected is complete and accurate. It is the genetic decomposition of the research subject. The results of this study are 3 students with pre-structural character, 5 unistructural students, 9 multistructural students, 7 relational students and 1 extended-abstract student. The conclusion of the study is that there are relational students who are able to coherently combine separate pieces of information and find the Pythagorean formula.
