Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has revolutionized the educational landscape, with online learning becoming a prominent mode of instruction. This study explores students' self-efficacy in the context of online discussions and presentations in English language learning. The research involved English Education students in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGDs). The questionnaire assessed students' self-efficacy beliefs in their speaking abilities and handling challenging situations during online discussions and presentations. The FGD provided more profound insights into the factors influencing students' experiences with virtual classroom speaking. The findings revealed that many students demonstrated a positive self-efficacy in their speaking abilities during online discussions. They expressed confidence in their communication skills and ability to handle complex tasks. However, limited access to internet connectivity, lack of engagement and social loafing, lack of preparation, students’ English Proficiency, and fear of making mistakes were demotivating factors affecting self-efficacy. The study highlights the importance of fostering a supportive online learning environment to enhance students' self-efficacy. To gain a better understanding of students' self-efficacy in online discussion and presentation, future research could include a more diverse group of students from various institutions and academic levels.

Abstract

Due to the essentiality of oral presentation, giving corrective feedback was gaining potential discussion, especially in oral language. Thus, this study investigates the attitudes of graduate students within the English department at a Central Java, Indonesia university towards teachers' oral corrective feedback (OCF) during academic speaking presentations. Utilizing quantitative descriptive survey design, a 6-item questionnaire developed by Ur (1999) was administered using probability sampling on (n=23). This research explores preferences among students regarding explicit and implicit OCF, peer criticism, and meta-linguistic feedback. Results indicate a predominant preference (73.9%) for explicit OCF, reflecting a strong tendency toward direct and honest correction from teachers. While implicit OCF obtained positive responses, students exhibited reluctance towards peer criticism, expressing a preference for teacher feedback. However, there was notable enthusiasm (69.6%) for meta-linguistic OCF, highlighting students' receptiveness to linguistic nuances and novel perspectives. These findings underscore the significance of understanding students' preferences in OCF contexts, emphasizing the value placed on explicit teacher correction and the appreciation for meta-linguistic insights within academic speaking classes.

Abstract

Education in the digital era is experiencing rapid development with various informative and innovative technologies. One of them is the digital learning platform Quizizz, an interactive learning platform that can be integrated into the application of Problem Based Learning (PBL) models. The application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model assisted by Quizziz media in Vocational High Schools (SMK) has the potential to improve student learning outcomes, in this study is the exposition text material of Indonesian subjects in Class X. However, comprehensive research on the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning Model (PBL) assisted by Quizziz media in SMK is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether there is an improvement in student learning outcomes by applying the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model assisted by Quizziz media. This research uses a quasi-experimental method with a quantitative approach. The research sample consisted of all Class X students of SMK 7 Semarang. The experimental class applies the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model assisted by Quizziz media, while the control class does not use Queziz media. The results showed improved student learning outcomes in both groups. However, the most significant improvement in learning outcomes occurred in the group that used the educational game application Quizizz. This study supports the hypothesis that the use of Quizizz can improve student learning outcomes in the exposition text material of Grade 7 Indonesian subjects. These results make an important contribution to our understanding of the application of the Quizziz media-assisted Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model as a learning tool in vocational schools and its implications for student learning outcomes Keyword: Learning Outcomes; Problem Based Learning; Quizizz

Abstract

This study used classroom action research to investigate if the L-R-D method may improve reading comprehension in the VIII class at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara. There were two sessions per cycle of this two-cycle classroom action research methodology. Pre- and post-tests, as well as a questionnaire, were employed by the researcher as data collection tools. The pre-test results from the first reflection were used as the foundation for this investigation. The results demonstrated the students' persistent struggles with reading comprehension and their inability to discriminate between references, textual meaning, specific information, and general information. After taking the pre-test (58.9), cycle one post-test (72.8), and cycle two post-test (81.4), the respondents' mean scores showed a substantial improvement. Additionally, the results of this study indicated favourable attitudes about the application of the L-R-D approach. The results of the questionnaire indicated that 46.08% agreed, 2.77% agreed, 0.28% disagreed, and 0% strongly disagreed, with 50.85% highly agreeing. The L-R-D technique may improve the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara, according to the study's findings.

The transitivity analysis of Adila Hassim's speech at the ICJ reveals a strategic use of different processes to construct ideational meaning. The material process is most prominent (13 or 43.33%), emphasizing actions and events. The relational process follows (10 or 33.33%), highlighting relationships and attributes. Verbal and mental processes each account for 6.66% (2 verbal and 2 mental process) reflecting the importance of communication and cognition. The existential process, (3 or 10%), put the speech in reality. The absence of behavioral processes indicates no focus on behaviors. Abstract

The study aims to investigate the various forms of deixis and their roles within the short story "The Garden of Paradise." Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the author employs Cresswell's (2013) theoretical framework. The data analysis is based on pragmatic theories by Griffiths (2006) and deixis theories by Yule (1996), Cruse (2000), Bouk (2016), and Levinson (1983). The findings reveal: (1) A total of 202 instances of deixis in the short story, categorized into five types, including 89 (44%) instances of person deixis, 31 (15,34%) of spatial deixis, 37 (18,31%) of time deixis, 35 (17,32%) of discourse deixis, and 10 (5,03%) of social deixis. (2) Each type of deixis has distinct functions: person deixis clarifies the roles of participants in speech acts, spatial deixis indicates the relative locations of speakers and listeners, time deixis specifies when the speech occurs, discourse deixis relates to elements within the speech act discourse, and social deixis highlights aspects of the social relationship between speakers and listeners.
