Abstract

Bridge infrastructure is critical in connecting one region with other areas separated by rivers or ravines. In Minangkabau, a type of bridge is built using the Ba Atok Bridge roof. This bridge structure is characterised by pointed roof-like buffalo horns, where the Minangkabau people are known as Gonjong. The remaining Ba Atok Bridge is located in Padang City, specifically in Guo Village, Jalan Lubuak Tampuruang, Kuranji Village, Kuranji District, Padang City, with a bridge length of 16 meters. The community needs the Ba Atok Bridge as a bridge to cross the river to gardens, schools, madrasas, mosques, and other villages. Its unique shape has charm, and this is one of the cultural heritage assets that must be maintained as a characteristic bridge between the nuances of traditional Minangkabau culture. Therefore, the Community Service Team of the Faculty of Engineering, Andalas University, is also collaborating with the Tourism Awareness Group (POKDARWIS), which also has the same initiative, namely carrying out bridge restoration with traditional Minangkabau cultural nuances. Restoration begins with identifying damage, discussing it with community groups, making an architectural design, submitting a proposal to Bank Nagari, and repairing the bridge's upper frame. The Ba Atokini bridge restoration activities impact crossing access and have become characteristic of the Guo Tourism Village, which POKDARWIS manages.

Abstract

Community service was conducted at the Balai Gadang Sapan livestock group in the Rambatan sub-district, Tanah Datar district. This group's businesses are beef cattle breeding and organic fertilizer processing. The problem with group businesses is that management and business knowledge still need to be higher. Group members still need help to apply management and business principles in managing the business. This community engagement aims to develop the Balai Gadang Sapan group business by increasing the performance and productivity of the beef cattle breeding and organic fertilizer processing business (UPPO) through implementing management aspects in the group business. The methods for carrying out activities were lectures, discussions, mentoring, and demonstrations. The stage carried out in implementing those four methods was the preparation stage, namely preparing material related to completing the solution in the form of PowerPoint, modules, banners, and leaflets. At the implementation stage, modules were distributed to participants, and the material was later. The evaluation stage involved participants filling out a prepared questionnaire. This evaluation was carried out to determine the group's ability to implement management aspects. The results of this activity were five essential aspects that must be applied in group management: making plans consisting of learning and business planning, organizing, and carrying out activities, evaluating business activities, and cadre of management. The group's ability to apply management aspects can be improved at the intermediate and primary levels.

Abstract

The modern society lifestyle triggers a tendency for people to consume fast food with high-calorie, low-nutrient, and low-fiber. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, society is becoming more aware of maintaining health by consuming healthy and nutritious foods. Therefore, the target of this educational webinar program was educated individuals in the education sector, and they were expected to influence their surrounding communities to adopt healthy eating patterns through the consumption of functional foods. Oil-in-water (O/W) food emulsions such as milk, mayonnaise, and creamer are widely consumed in processed foods. The development of Fiber CrèmeTM creamer as a substitute for milk/coconut milk, which is low sugar, trans-fat-free, and high fiber, has been produced by PT. LNK to enhance the taste of processed foods and beverages. Compounds such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can be encapsulated within the emulsion system, such as using Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) in creamer products. This webinar was attended by 103 participants, with 80% coming from the education sector. The participants' high level of knowledge and awareness was reflected through online questionnaires and comments. This educational webinar encourages the community to sustainably enhance body immunity by consuming functional foods.

Abstract

The Nagari Manggopoh is a central area for agricultural product corn, mainly corn for livestock, in Lubuk Basung District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The corn kernels produced are sold to animal feed processing factories. However, the corn stalk waste left after harvest is typically burned, leading to land biota damage and air pollution. This community service project aims to raise awareness and demonstrate the process of converting corn plant waste into compost. The project involved socializing, training, and practical demonstrations on composting corn crop waste. These activities have been conducted through counseling sessions, focus group discussions, and hands-on training from June to August 2022. Following the activities, an evaluation was conducted through discussions with the participants. The project's initial result was that ten stakeholders participated in the socialization of using corn crop waste for composting. Additionally, 15 Batang Piarau Jorong Sago farmer group members in Kenagarian Manggopoh have received training and successfully produced compost from corn stalk waste generated from animal feed crops.

Abstract

Gambir, an extract derived from the leaves and branches of the gambir plant, holds significant potential for enhancing the local economy and its benefits as a cosmetics product. Jorong Balai Tampuak Pinang, Nagari Simpang Kapuak, Kecamatan Mungka, was one of the areas producing traditional gambir in Lima Puluh Kota district, West Sumatra, Indonesia. This community service initiative aimed to augment the economic value of gambir from its processing to raw materials of bath soap. The initiative began with an educational session for training participants, outlining the advantages of gambir in skincare and how to incorporate it into bath soap formulations. Following the learning session, participants actively produced gambir-contained bath soap utilizing the provided formula. The activity received favorable feedback from participants who appreciated enhancing knowledge and skills. The outcomes of this endeavor underscore the substantial potential of developing body care products utilizing gambir as a primary ingredient. Participant testimonials underscore the need to conduct similar community engagement activities to harness Gambir's further utilization of other personal care products. The collaboration between the pharmacy study program and the local community has opened new avenues for local economic development and sustainable growth, significantly impacting the local population's well-being in the region.

Abstract

The waste problem is a challenge for cities, especially in developing countries. Waste management is closely related to population, community values and behavior, and existing organizations and systems. Organic waste refers to waste materials that can decompose naturally and be converted into compost. It includes various types of waste, such as food scraps, dry leaves, and vegetables. Based on the literature obtained, it was reported that the City of Padang produces 600 tons of waste daily and ends up in the Final Disposal Site (TPA) without any follow-up or effective management. A very efficient approach to managing organic waste involves transforming the waste into Eco-enzymes, a remarkable discovery made by Dr. Rasukon Poompanvong from Thailand over three decades ago. This eco-enzyme training was conducted on 16 September 2023 at the Cendana residence in Koto Kaciak, Padang City, West Sumatra-Indonesia. The results of the activities presented by the resource person to the community provided knowledge to the community regarding eco-enzymes. Eco-enzyme training for the community has been carried out. It was concluded that eco-enzyme can be used to reduce waste, especially organic waste, which has many benefits.

Abstract

Nobita Hill, a tourist site in Padang City, is undergoing development as a tourist destination that offers a bird's-eye view of Padang City. Unfortunately, the hilly topography with steep slopes increases the risk of landslides in this area. In order to address the problem, the community service team from the Physics Department of Andalas University has carried out a six-month community service program from July to December 2022. It focused on disaster awareness education and used a qualitative approach. This activity aims to socialize disaster mitigation efforts, especially those related to landslides and earthquakes, considering that Padang City is also prone to earthquakes. The results of this activity showed an increase in the knowledge of the local community after the socialization, but repeated activities are needed to achieve optimal results. This ongoing activity is essential to ensure continuous improvement in the community's understanding of disaster mitigation and to support efforts to make Bukit Nobita a disaster-resilient area. Thus, this activity makes a positive contribution to shaping a safe, sustainable, and disaster-resilient tourism environment.

Abstract

The high level of corruption, which has become a pathology in developing countries, especially Indonesia, is evidenced by the 2022 international transparency data, which scored 34/100 and ranked 110 out of 180 surveyed countries. Indonesia ranks as the 5th most corrupt country in Southeast Asia. With these results, Indonesia has only been able to increase its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score by 2 points from 32 over the past decade since 2012. Despite Law No. 20 of 2001's eradication of corruption, which covers various aspects, related to anti-corruption efforts, including education and anti-corruption socialization, this pathology remains unresolved. Therefore, a strong foundation is needed, especially among the younger generation as the nation's future leaders, by strengthening students' character regarding integrity and courage against corruption. This community engagement used socialization, interviews with school members, and participatory observation within the school environment. The concept of public administration ethics serves as the basis for this activity. The results showed that anti-corruption education through the perspective of public administration at SMP N 13 Padang plays a significant role in shaping students' integrity and courage in combating corruption. As adolescents, students are in the process of forming moral values and behaviors. Thus, anti-corruption education interventions can significantly impact shaping their character. Students improved their understanding of corruption and developed a more courageous attitude and strong integrity. The results provided valuable insights and a foundation for further improvement in anti-corruption education in middle schools.

Abstract

Forest betel (Piper aduncum) includes weed plants from the Piperaceae family that can be used as the main ingredient in the manufacture of environmentally friendly pest control technology, also known as botanical pesticides. Botanical pesticides from P. aduncum have the active compound dillapiol, which can control pests in various plants, especially horticulture. Commercialization of botanical pesticides needs to be done because the product meets the standards for pest control and is available in sufficient quantities on the market. The partnership was initiated by involving local communities as providers of raw materials. Surian area, Solok Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, has an area where P. aduncum plants dominate, so it has the potential to provide raw materials. Socialization activities about the potential of forest betel fruit or P. aduncum were given to prospective partner communities. Furthermore, training activities on handling P. aduncum fruit were also provided so that partners had sufficient knowledge and skills to proceed. At the same time, an analysis of P. aduncum fruit extract from the Surian area was also carried out. Sampling was carried out in the Surian area, and then the material was sorted, dried, refined, sieved, maserase, and extracted. Identification of dillapiol content was carried out using GC-MS. The analysis results showed that P. aduncum fruit extract was known to have an average yield of 0.1% with a dillapiol content of 12.23% at a retention time of 19.925 minutes.
