Abstract

The bench vise table used in benchwork practice activities has not been ergonomically designed, which can lead to awkward postures and increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders among students. Ergonomics is a crucial factor in improving comfort, efficiency, and safety during manual work. This study was conducted to design an ergonomic bench vise table by integrating anthropometric data with the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) method. The research applied a descriptive-quantitative approach with 83 students selected from a population of 104 using Slovin’s formula. Anthropometric measurements were taken to obtain body dimensions, a Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire was distributed to identify musculoskeletal complaints, and posture assessments were conducted using the RULA method. Data were analyzed with normality, uniformity, and adequacy tests, and percentile values (P5–P95) were used as the basis for the table design. The results revealed that the existing bench vise table surface was on average 12.5 cm below the students’ elbow height, which produced a RULA score of 6, categorized as high risk and requiring immediate improvement. Anthropometric analysis indicated elbow height values of P5 = 76.02 cm, P50 = 86.20 cm, and P95 = 96.38 cm. These values were used to propose a new bench vise table design with adjustable height in the range of 76.02–96.38 cm. Evaluation of the proposed design demonstrated a reduction in the RULA score from 6 to 2, signifying a shift from high risk to low risk. The findings suggest that an ergonomically designed adjustable bench vise table can significantly improve working posture, minimize musculoskeletal risks, and enhance learning conditions in benchwork practice. Further studies are recommended to test the structural stability, load capacity, and user satisfaction of the proposed design.

Abstract

Improper working postures are one of the main causes of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), particularly in manual and repetitive tasks such as packaging operations. This study aims to analyze the ergonomic risks associated with workers’ postures at the packing station of an oleochemical company and to propose corrective measures to reduce potential MSDs. The assessment employed two ergonomic evaluation methods: Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) to determine posture risk levels and the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire to identify body regions experiencing discomfort. The results revealed that Worker A obtained a REBA score of 8, indicating a high-risk level that requires immediate corrective action, while Worker B had a score of 3, categorized as low risk. The most frequent complaints were concentrated in the lower back, shoulders, and wrists, primarily caused by repetitive bending and lifting movements from the conveyor to the pallet. The findings suggest that the main contributing factors are improper workstation height, repetitive tasks, and prolonged standing durations. Therefore, ergonomic improvements such as adjusting the height of the conveyor and worktable, implementing scheduled microbreaks, and providing posture training are recommended. These interventions are expected to reduce the risk of MSDs, improve worker comfort, and enhance overall productivity at the packing station.

Abstract

The increasing amount of industrial and domestic waste poses a serious challenge to environmental sustainability. Utilizing waste materials as substitutes in construction offers a promising solution. This study aims to optimize the composition of eco-friendly paving blocks by incorporating seashell waste and coconut coir powder using the Taguchi method. Four factors including cement, sand, seashell powder, and coconut coir powder were analyzed at four variation levels based on an orthogonal array L16 (4⁴), producing 16 experimental combinations. Compressive strength was used as the main performance parameter. The Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio analysis showed that coconut coir powder had the greatest effect on compressive strength, followed by seashell powder, cement, and sand. The optimal composition was obtained with 643.23 g of cement, 2289.60 g of sand, 228.961 g of seashell powder, and no coconut coir powder. Although ANOVA results indicated no statistically significant factors (p > 0.05), coconut coir powder had the strongest influence. The regression model explained 56.25% of the variation in compressive strength. These findings suggest that seashell waste can serve as a viable partial replacement material for producing environmentally friendly and cost-effective paving blocks.

Abstract

PT Telkom Access is a global internet service provider that plays a crucial role in developing fiber optic–based telecommunication infrastructure. One of its operational areas, located on Jl. Duri, Gambir District, Central Jakarta, faces issues related to the inefficient distribution route of the 1:4 Optical Distribution Point (ODP) serving twenty customer homes. This condition has led to 198 customer complaints in 2023 and high installation costs for the Optical Distribution Cabinet (ODC) to ODP distribution network, amounting to Rp 78,205,400. This study aims to optimize the installation cost of the Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network using a Linear Programming approach with the aid of LINGO software, as well as to design a more efficient ODC scheme on a new ODP configuration. The approach involves a comparative analysis between 1:4 and 1:8 ODP configurations, considering both technical and economic aspects of fiber optic network distribution. The results show that using an ODP 1:8 configuration with a 1:8 passive splitter in the new FTTH line produces a total installation cost of Rp 49,085,400, which is approximately Rp 29,120,000 lower than the 1:4 ODP configuration, resulting in cost optimization of 59.37%. In addition to cost savings, the ODP 1:8 configuration reduces network maintenance complexity and enhances distribution efficiency without compromising service quality. Based on these findings, this research recommends the adoption of the ODP 1:8 configuration as the optimal solution to improve cost efficiency, network maintainability, and sustainable infrastructure development in fiber optic network implementation. This strategy is expected to strengthen PT Telkom Access’s competitiveness and support sustainable global internet service performance.

Abstract

Tourism journeys always begin with a planning stage, involving the selection of destinations to visit and the accommodation to be used throughout the trip. The Orienteering Problem with Hotel Selection (OPHS) serves as a model for recommending multi-day travel itineraries that are both efficient and profitable, as it aims to maximize total reward (or profit) while keeping the total travel distance within reasonable limits. This research extends the conventional OPHS by incorporating the time-dependent satisfaction of destinations, resulting in a model referred to as the Orienteering Problem with Hotel Selection and Time-Dependent Satisfaction (OPHS-TDS). The motivation for this development arises from the observation that the quality of tourist experience at certain destinations varies depending on the time of arrival. This phenomenon is particularly evident in nature-based attractions, where visiting during specific period can significantly affect both the visitor’s experience and the perceived benefit gained from the trip. The study presents a mathematical formulation of the OPHS-TDS and proposes a solution approach based on the Skewed Variable Neighborhood Search (SVNS) algorithm by allowing exploration of wide range neighborhood of solutions to search for near optimum solution. Computational experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that SVNS is efficiently solve OPHS-TDS with only 3.17% average differential with ILP, and further experiments using real-world data from the Province of Bali confirm the model’s applicability and potential in practical multi-day tourism planning scenarios.
