Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the doctrine of the oneness of God in Sikhism and the spiritual practice of Naam Japna as a primary expression of Sikh religious life. The study addresses the question of how the Sikh concept of monotheism, formulated in the principle of Ik Onkar, extends beyond the theological level and is embodied in everyday spiritual discipline. The study aims to analyze how the repetition of the Divine Name (Waheguru) functions as a medium for internalizing monotheistic consciousness in Sikh religious life. This research employs a qualitative method based on a literature review, utilizing the phenomenology of religion approach and theological-symbolic analysis of primary and secondary Sikh literature. The findings demonstrate that Naam Japna serves as a spiritual mechanism that shifts the orientation of consciousness from egocentrism toward theocentrism through the continuous repetition of the Divine Name. This practice functions not only as devotional meditation but also as an ontological discipline that affirms the presence of the one God in all aspects of life. Furthermore, the internalization of the concept of God through Naam Japna generates ethical implications, particularly an awareness of human equality and a rejection of caste-based social hierarchies. These findings affirm that, in Sikhism, monotheism is not merely doctrinal but is manifested as an existential consciousness that shapes the spirituality, ethics, and collective identity of its adherents.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the paradox of socio-religious life in Indonesia, namely the high level of public religiosity that does not always correspond to the quality of social ethics in the public sphere. Religion is strongly present in the forms of ritual, symbolism, identity, and communal expression, yet various problems such as corruption, intolerance, symbolic violence, religious disinformation, and weak social responsibility continue to emerge. Accordingly, this study aims to explain the paradox between the high level of religiosity in Indonesian society and the low quality of social ethics, while also formulating the development of fiqh as an analytical framework expected to bridge the normative dimension of the sharī‘ah and socio-religious reality. This study employs a qualitative approach based on library research by examining relevant literature, with the analysis conducted thematically and conceptually through a deductive reading of normative concepts in Islamic law and an inductive reading of Indonesia’s socio-religious reality. The findings show that the paradox of religiosity cannot be understood merely as an individual moral failure, but rather as a socio-religious phenomenon related to the dominance of legal-formal, textual, and casuistic understandings of fiqh. Under these conditions, fiqh tends to function as a tool for determining legal status, but has not been sufficiently developed as an instrument for reading the social roots of public problems. This study argues that fiqh needs to be reconstructed as a system of knowledge that operates through the dialectical relationship between naṣṣ, ‘aql, and al-wāqi‘. Thus, fiqh functions not only as a tool of social control, but also as a tool of social engineering oriented towards public welfare, justice, and the transformation of social ethics. These findings contribute to the development of Islamic legal studies and socio-religious scholarship by offering a more reflective, critical, contextual, and transformative fiqh framework for reading the realities of Indonesian society.

Abstract

This article aims to identify and analyze the strengthening of social cohesion within the Angkola community through religious and cultural approaches in enhancing the competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This study employs a library research method using a qualitative and descriptive approach. The data utilized are secondary sources, including official documents, reports, scientific articles, and statistical data obtained from various government agencies and relevant institutions. Data were collected through an extensive review of literature and publications related to the role of micro-enterprises in the economic and social development of the Angkola community. The data were analyzed qualitatively by identifying, classifying, and interpreting information from multiple sources to gain a comprehensive understanding of social cohesion and the competitiveness of micro-enterprises within the Angkola society. The findings reveal that the roles of culture and religion in strengthening social cohesion among the Angkola community are reflected in various traditions and cultural practices that have been preserved across generations. Angkola local culture plays a crucial role in fostering social unity. One of the most significant traditions is Dalihan Na Tolu, which emphasizes kinship values, mutual respect, and harmonious social relationships. This cultural philosophy serves as the foundation for building fair social interactions and provides a peaceful mechanism for resolving conflicts, thereby maintaining social cohesion. Another important cultural and religious practice is the tradition of Mangitak. Initially, Mangitak referred to a traditional dish prepared exclusively for customary ceremonies due to its sacred significance for the community and the Batak kings. The preparation of Mangitak in the past involved the practice of Surat Tumbaga Hori an unwritten customary agreement known as Parpokatan or Martahi, meaning deliberation or collective discussion to prevent misunderstandings and ensure consensus among community members. Therefore, strengthening social cohesion through cultural and religious values contributes significantly to enhancing the competitiveness of MSMEs, as small enterprises function not only as economic institutions but also as instruments for community empowerment and the reinforcement of social relationships among members of society.
