Abstract

The impact of firm-level corporate governance challenges on sustainable development requires attention, particularly in developing countries. This qualitative study explores factors contributing to South African firms' poor CG performance and the implications of firm-level CG challenges towards attaining SDGs in South Africa. It employs a rapid review methodology to search and review selected articles systematically. Content analysis is used to draw findings. Results reveal that historical, economic, lack of critical scholarship and weak regulatory enforcement and oversight factors affect South African corporate governance practices. Notably, a lack of reform in the corporate governance architecture underpins most of the challenges firms experience regarding corporate governance practices. These results can be linked to slow progress towards realising sustainable development goals (SDG) targets from achieving socioeconomic equality, board diversity, jobs, poverty alleviation and justice for all. This study contributes to scholarship on the intersectionality between CG, SDGs, and existing challenges that restrict the business sector from fully contributing to national development. In South Africa, the study also reviews progress towards strengthening the CG fabric in the post-apartheid era.

Abstract

This research examines the importance of exploring foreign market entry strategies for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by a case study of Creative Kokedama, an SME that developed product innovations from ordinary flowering plants into ornamental plant kokedama and successfully penetrated the Japanese market, the country origin of kokedama. The research findings indicate that the main motivation for Creative Kokedama to expand into the international market is intrinsic motivation. The owner reasoned that kokedama plant crafts originated from Japan, so she wanted to bring kokedama back to Japan. She has his own satisfaction when she is able to bring kokedama to the Japanese market. That motivation can related to psychological factors, such as the desire for self-development and global recognition, as well as ethnocentrism, which is pride in local cultural values reflected in the kokedama products. The entry mode chosen is direct exporting, which does not go through an intermediary, but directly to foreign buyer. Japan was chosen as the export destination country because Japan is the origin country of kokedama. Although previously it had also exported to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore. Selection of export destination country can be related to pull factor theory in internationalization, Japan as the country of origin for kokedama, may have a high appreciation for products with unique approaches or modifications. This research contributes to the literature on SME internationalization strategies by offering insights into the importance of the combination of product innovation and intrinsic motivation especially psychological factors in achieving export success. Moreover, these findings can also serve as practical guidance for other SMEs looking to enter the global market through innovation and locally value-based strategies.

Abstract

The low export performance of SMEs in Indonesia is a significant problem in supporting national economic growth because SMEs are often less able to take advantage of international market opportunities compared to large companies. One of the critical determinants of SME exports is networking and partnership relationships. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach to analyze the role of networking and partnerships in supporting SME exporters entering the international market. The study was conducted through a survey of 67 SME exporters in East Java who are members of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, using a questionnaire as a data collection instrument. The results of the study indicate that SME exporters face various obstacles in marketing, human resources, finance, access to information, and the business environment. However, networking and partnerships have been proven to support their export activities. Strategic partners who play a role include government agencies, business partners, business associations, chambers of commerce, state-owned and private companies, universities, and support from family. This support includes information on international market data, business opportunities, potential analysis, access to capital, promotion, and competitive strategies in the global market. These findings indicate that SMEs that build good networks and partnerships can overcome various obstacles and challenges and gain significant benefits from entering the international market.

Abstract

HDI is a benchmark for a country in achieving human development in the country. Indonesia is a developing country with a relatively increasing HDI value every year. This shows that the efforts made by Indonesia are going well. However, Indonesia experienced a decrease in HDI value in 2019 towards 2020, due to restrictions on activities caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, the HDI value in each province in Indonesia is uneven, even from the publication data of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows a significant difference in HDI value between provinces in Indonesia. So that evaluation and improvement are needed to be able to equalize and stabilize HDI in Indonesia. HDI value can be influenced by several factors including economy, education, and health. This study aims to determine the direct effect of economic variables on HDI, the direct effect of education variables on HDI, the direct effect of health variables on HDI, the indirect effect of education variables on HDI through economic variables and health variables. The data used in this study are data on the Human Development Index of economic, education and health variables along with the indicators that measure them, from 34 provinces in Indonesia in 2022. This study applies SEM-PLS to determine the factors that influence the Human Development Index (HDI). The results of this study indicate that economic variables and education variables have a direct influence on the Human Development Index (HDI), while health variables have no direct influence on the Human Development Index (HDI). Then the education variable through the economic variable has an indirect effect on the Human Development Index (HDI), and the education variable through the health variable has no indirect effect on the Human Development Index (HDI).

Abstract

Accident losses are unavoidable when accidents occur. Data from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) show an increasing trend in accident claim amounts in recent years. This study aims to calculate aggregate accident claims based on the number and magnitude of accident losses in Indonesia from 2013 to 2022, enabling insurance companies or entities covering such losses to estimate the total liability required for all accident claims. The Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution was applied to model claim amounts, while the negative binomial distribution was used for the number of accidents. The results show that the expected value of aggregate claims is IDR 236,768,463,076.93, with a variance of 7.28 × 10²⁰. The findings indicate that these distributions are suitable for modeling aggregate claims, providing insights for determining appropriate insurance premiums.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology is currently very extensive in its use, especially technology in the field of computers. Expert Systems are one of the sciences in the field of computers that can help in diagnosing various diseases, one of which is epilepsy. The estimated number of epilepsy sufferers in Indonesia is 1.5 million with a prevalence of 0.5-0.6% of the Indonesian population. The expert system method used to diagnose epilepsy early is the Dempster Shafer method. The Dempster Shafer method is used to combine separate pieces of information or evidence to calculate the probability of an event. This study used 7 types of epilepsy, including in the Focal Epilepsy category consisting of Simple Partial and Complex Partial, while in the General Epilepsy category consisting of Absence, Atonic, Myoclonic, Tonic-Clonic, and Clonic. This study produces a website-based application for early diagnosis of epilepsy using the Dempster Shafer method with the PHP programming language and MySQL database. By using this application, it can provide convenience to the medical community and patients in early diagnosis of epilepsy experienced by sufferers. From the results of this study, it was found that the highest level of accuracy was found in Tonic-Clonic seizures which are included in the General Epilepsy category, namely 92.78%.
