Abstract

This research investigates the strategies used by high-achieving students of the English department at several colleges and their understanding of learning materials studied during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The researcher decided on a small sample size of 9 students majoring in English at several universities in Bengkulu to be sampled in this research, ranging in age 20 to 21 years old. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method to collect the research data using the interview method to answer the research questions. From the results of this study, following the focus of the proposed research, there are three kinds of strategies used by nine students in this study. The first is a note-taking strategy, the second is a reading strategy, and the third is a recording strategy. This strategy is used by students who high-achieving in the learning process to understand the material being studied.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the implementation of Google Classroom (GCR) in Online Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic for the second year students of SMAN 08 Kota Bengkulu and to find out the Students’ Perspective of Google Classroom (GCR) in Online Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic at SMAN 08 Kota Bengkulu. There were 30 students who participated in this research gathered by using purposive sampling. The research method applied in this current study was a qualitative method. The data were collected through observation, interviews and documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher applied the theory from Miles and Huberman (1994). The result of the first research question showed that Google Classroom was used frequently by the teacher and students to conduct online learning. The result of the second research question demonstrated that only 48,84% of the students were satisfied with the use of Google Classroom. The students were not satisfied the most with the students’ indicator of satisfaction, which reached 75%. However, 92,7% of them gave positive feedback towards the instruction delivery. Overall, this result suggested that Google Classroom did not received positive feedback from the majority of the students, with some exception of instruction delivery. The researcher recommended the teacher at SMAN 08 Kota Bengkulu to provide more creative way in online teaching, so students have the opportunity to learn more effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in cognitive learning outcomes (in the form of pre-test and post-test scores) of students in class X IPS 1 as a control class and class XI MIPA 3 as experimental class at SMA N 5 Bengkulu Tengah, by providing treatment using the Compare -Diagnose-Operate (CDO) strategy. This type of research is Quasi Experiment. The population is tenth grade students of SMA N 5 Bengkulu Tengah with 368 students. From this population, 37 students were taken as samples. Each class is 17 students XI IPS 1 and 20 students XI MIPA 3. Research data were collected through writing tests and documentation. The results showed a significant change in the experimental class with an average value of 71.85 while in the control class an average value of 52.06. The post-test results show that the Compare-Diagnose- Operate (CDO) strategy can improve students' writing skills. Thus, the Compare- Diagnose-Operate (CDO) strategy can be one of effective strategy to increase students‟ writing ability.

Abstract

This research aims to enriching students vocabulary mastery by using spelling bee games. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Kota Bengkulu with consisted of 180 students into seven classes, namely VII A – VII F. After ensuring with the purposive sampling, two classes were finally chosen as the sample of this research: VII D as the experimental class and VII E as the control class. Both of classes consisted of 30 students with almost homogenous score. This research had been conducted at SMP Negeri 15 Kota Bengkulu. This research employed a Quasi-Experimental method. The Experimental class treated by using Spelling Bee strategy, while the control class was using the conventional ways. The pre-test was given to the two groups before giving the treatment. The result of pre-test showed the mean score of experimental class was 60.17 and the control class was 59.83. After giving the treatment, post-test was given. The result of post-test showed the mean score of experimental class was 76.00 and the control class was 69.83. in addition, the result of independent sample T-test (0.094) showed that t-count was smaller than t-table (2.00172) and sig (2-tailed) was higher than 0.05 (0.925 > 0.05). In other words, Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected. In summary, it could be stated that students’ who were taught vocabulary by using Spelling Bee was more effective than using the conventional ways. So, it can be concluded that Spelling Bee has positive effect to the Seventh Grade Students’ at SMP Negeri 15 Kota Bengkulu in vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the effect of critical reading strategy on student's reading ability in comprehending expository text of the second grade students of MAN 1 (MODEL) Lubuklinggau in the academic year 2019/2020. This research used quantitative research with quasi experimental design. The total population of students at the second grade was 312 students of MAN 1 (MODEL) Lubuklinggau in the academic year 2019/2020. The research chose two classes as the samples of the research. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling technique. The second grade students of XI MIPA 2 was experimental class who were taught using Critical Reading Strategy and the second grade students of XI MIPA 1 was control class who were taught by the teacher. The data were collected by using test. The data were analyzed by using T-test formula. The mean score in experimental class was 79.90 while the mean score of control class was 72.31. The mean different between them was 7.59. The result of t-test showed that the value of t-count (3.970) was higher than t-table (2.024) in df 38 (0.05). Therefore, the alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on the result above, the research finding was Critical Reading Strategy was effective on students’ reading ability in comprehending expository text for the second grade students of MAN 1 (MODEL) Lubuklinggau in academic year of 2019/2020.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the lexical errors which was produced by google translate in translating “Putri Serindang Bulan” short story to English language as the target language. This study was conducted by using descriptive design with qualitatitive approach, which was done with consideration that the purpose of this research to analyze the lexical errors which produced by google translate in translating “Putri Serindang Bulan” short story to English language as the target language. This study was focused on describing the types of lexical errors produced by google translation in translating “Putri Serindang Bulan” short story to English language. In this research, the writer became the main instrument. This study obtained the data by reading “Putri Serindang Bulan” short story to understand the information of the short story, translating the “Putri Serindang Bulan” short story into English language use google translate, and then comparing the source text with the translation result to find out the translation accuracy and make the terms that were considered as inaccurate translation. The result showed that many errors were produced by google translate in translating the short story, the most frequent error found were incorrect word and missing word. In conclusion, this study suggest that the human translators must revise the translation result from machine translation.

Abstract

This research analyzed the methods, techniques, and ideology in translation on bilingual story book for children entitled “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa.” The theories were used in this research are from Newmark, Molina Albir, and Venuti. This research intended to analyze the techniques, methods, and ideology in translation on “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa.” This research was used descriptive qualitative method because the researcher want to analyze verbal text in written form of “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa”. The source of data in this research was one of text in bilingual story book for children that is “Roro Jonggrang” story. There are several steps of analyzing the data: the first is reading the text entitled “Roro Jonggrang” in “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa”, the second is taking note of several data that need to analyze such as the phrases or sentences in “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa” stories, the third is identifying the technique of translation of “Roro Jonggrang” story in “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa.”, the fourth is observing which the technique of translation that often use in “Roro Jonggrang” story in “Little Sunshine Bilingual Book. Kumpulan Lagu dan Cerita Anak- Anak Dwibahasa” to know about the method that use in translation of this story, the last is after gaining the method that use in translation of this story, the researcher would know about ideology of this translation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study to investigate whether brainstorming strategy can improve the students’ speaking ability. The subject of research was XI IPA 2 in Academic year 2020/2021. The design of this research is classroom action research (CAR). The researcher evaluates the students’ speaking in five forms those are, Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Before doing cycle 1 the researcher gave speaking test of pre-cycle, based on the result the test in pre-cycle; the researcher gave treatments of action 1 and action 2 they are planning, implementing, observing and reflecting to see improvement of students’ speaking ability after the treatments were given. The brainstorming strategy can improve the students’ speaking ability in two cycle. Then the researcher find out there is a significance difference between the mean score of students’ speaking ability in cycle 1 (62,24) and the mean score of students’ speaking ability in cycle 2 (75,68). There is impact of cycle 2 and the result can achieve the criteria of success. By comparing the means, the researcher concluded that improvement students’ speaking ability through brainstorming strategy is an effective to develop students’ speaking skill. Therefore, English teacher are encourage to teach speaking through brainstorming strategy.

Abstract

The results of this study showed that the experimental group applying memorizing multi Senses techniques in teaching and learning, students scored better than the control group were not applying the technique of memorizing multi senses in the classroom. In the experimental group, the highest score was 90 and the lowest score was 60. While in the control group was the highest score was 75 and the lowest score was 35.Achievement students from both groups have different achievements. After passing the pre-test, treatment, and post-test, the students in the experimental group had improved its score high, fixed in the control group, student achievement scores in the mastery of vocabulary is still low. It is indicating that there are significant differences in the achievement of vocabulary achieved by students who have been using memorizing multi senses technique.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an important factor in measuring achievement in learning speaking in English. Proof of speaking fluency by students is shown when they communicate verbally with a native speaker. This study aims to explain the use of the Frozen cartoon film as a learning medium to improve the students’ pronunciation ability. The research focuses are the Frozen 1 cartoon synopsis, the stages, and procedures for implementing the dubbing and subtitling method and screening the film using the dubbing method. This study uses a descriptive research method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by library research (library research). Sources of data in the form of written materials consist of primary data sources and secondary data sources. The validity of the data test emphasizes the validity and reliability test. The results of the study were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results showed that the cartoon "Frozen" as a learning medium was very appropriate to be practiced in improving students' pronunciation skills. This media provides several benefits: (a) being a solution in communicating English orally, (b) providing interesting, attractive teaching media, and (c) choosing the right learning method so that it is effective for students. The presentation of the “frozen” cartoon is packaged with interesting storyline pictures and audio sound that makes students involved in the film. The dubbing and subtitling methods are learning methods to motivate students to communicate in English. Effective and efficient media and methods can help students engage in learning English and at the same time be motivated to communicate in English.
