Abstract

This study examines the impact of the REACT (Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating, Transferring) model on the writing skills of university students. The research objectives were to describe students' writing skills before and after using the REACT model and to investigate the model's effect on their writing performance. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of 40 undergraduate students enrolled in an English writing course. The experimental group (n = 20) received writing instruction using the REACT model, while the control group (n = 20) received traditional writing instruction. Pre-test and post-test writing assessments were used to evaluate students' writing skills. The results showed that the experimental group’s writing skills improved from a mean score of 56.94 (SD = 8.12) in the pre-test to 75.88 (SD = 6.45) in the post-test, indicating a significant improvement from a “Fair” to a “More than sufficient” level. The control group's mean scores were 55.78 (SD = 7.89) and 61.23 (SD = 8.01) in the pre-test and post-test, respectively. A paired t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group (t(19) = 4.39, p .05), suggesting that the REACT model had a positive impact on students' writing skills. These findings highlight the potential of the REACT model as an effective instructional approach for enhancing writing skills in university students.

Abstract

This study examines the unspoken challenges experienced by Asian mothers through the lens of Asian motherhood as depicted in literature. The research aims to investigate how cultural norms and societal expectations shape the roles and experiences of mothers in Asian societies. Employing qualitative research methods, specifically thematic analysis, this study interprets and classifies the unspoken challenges portrayed in three short stories from Indonesia, China, and Japan. The findings reveal three prominent themes: developing resilience, performing silent sacrifice, and facing individual conflicts. The mothers in these stories exhibit diverse coping strategies in response to the unacknowledged challenges they encounter. This study contributes to the understanding of the enduring nature of traditional gender roles and expectations in Asian societies, highlighting the need for greater recognition and support for mothers facing these unspoken challenges. The results underscore the importance of continued research and dialogue on the experiences of Asian mothers to promote gender equality and the well-being of women in these contexts. The insights gained from this study can inform future research, policy, and practice aimed at addressing the unspoken challenges faced by mothers in Asian societies and beyond.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze instances of symbolic violence, a concept introduced by Pierre Bourdieu, in the comic adaptation of the short story "Cinderella." Symbolic violence refers to the subtle, often invisible forms of domination and oppression embedded in social structures and practices. By employing a descriptive qualitative method and applying Bourdieu's theory, this research seeks to illuminate how power imbalances and social hierarchies are perpetuated through seemingly innocuous interactions and cultural norms. The findings reveal that Cinderella experiences various forms of symbolic violence, including acts of domination, excessive demands, favoritism, mockery, emotional manipulation, and the suppression of truth. These instances serve to maintain the status quo and reinforce power dynamics between Cinderella and her oppressors. By exposing these subtle yet pervasive forms of violence, this study contributes to the broader understanding of how symbolic violence operates in literature and society. The insights gained can inform future research on the representation of power dynamics in popular culture and the ways in which symbolic violence shapes social interactions and individual experiences. Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of recognizing and challenging the hidden forms of oppression that often go unnoticed in daily life.

Abstract

This study examines the themes of colonial entanglement and ecological power in the film Dune (2021), focusing on the commodification of the spice "melange" on Arrakis. Using postcolonial ecocriticism and cultural studies frameworks, it explores how the film portrays environmental exploitation and the marginalization of the indigenous Fremen. The analysis reveals how colonial powers, like House Harkonnen and House Atreides, dehumanize and oppress the Fremen, ignoring their ecological knowledge and cultural significance. By drawing parallels to real-world colonial histories, the study highlights the film's critique of environmental degradation and cultural marginalization. It underscores the importance of recognizing indigenous knowledge and rights for sustainable and equitable resource management. This interdisciplinary approach provides insights into the ongoing relevance of colonial power dynamics and resource commodification in contemporary society.

Abstract

Conflict is a social phenomenon that still often occurs in society, and novels can serve as an effective educational medium to introduce various types of social conflicts to students. This research aims to describe the social conflict contained in the novel Saga of the Ocean by Ratih Kumala. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with literary sociology approach. The data collected is in the form of descriptions of words and images, not in the form of numbers, relating to social conflicts identified through the analysis of the novel. This research analyzes social conflicts using Alwi's theory of conflict, which classifies conflicts based on the nature and position of the perpetrators. The findings of this research identify different types of conflicts that are relevant to be studied in the context of society. In addition, this research also reveals the attitudes of the characters in dealing with problems or conflicts, which can be an example for readers. From the classification results, readers can understand the causal relationship behind the conflict.

Abstract

This research focuses on the concept of deixis within pragmatics, specifically examining the audio materials of the English for Nusantara untuk SMP/MTs Kelas VIII textbook used for teaching the English language in Indonesia. Deixis involves using language to point to specific entities or characteristics within a given context. The study aims to identify the various types of deixis present, determine the dominant types employed, and describe the reference meanings associated with deixis in the materials. Through qualitative descriptive research and content analysis methods, the study identifies three primary deixis categories within the audio material: Person Deixis (56.76%), Temporal Deixis (30.63%), and Spatial Deixis (12.61%). The dominant use of Person Deixis underscores its importance and role in language use within the educational materials. These findings contribute significantly to a deeper understanding of deixis in language learning contexts, emphasizing its pragmatic significance and relevance in instructional materials.

Abstract

Emotions are an important aspect of human life, and emotion verbs play a key role in conveying emotional experiences. This study aims to analyze sad emotion verbs in Minangkabau using the Metabasic Natural Semantics (MSA) theory developed by Anna Wierzbicka and Cliff Goddard. Through qualitative analysis with a descriptive analytic method, this study identifies and describes sad emotion verbs from dictionaries, literary texts, and interviews with native speakers. The results show that there are several sad emotion verbs, such as “ibo,” “marasai,” and “manangih,” each with specific emotional nuances. This research highlights how the Minangkabau language provides rich terms for expressing sadness and reflects emotional experiences in specific cultural contexts. Using MSA theory, this study makes a theoretical contribution to semantic and linguistic studies and enriches the understanding of the relationship between language and emotion in Minangkabau culture.

Abstract

This research examines discrimination and violence against female characters in Gde Artawan's novel 'Bidara Biduri', focusing on how these issues are portrayed and experienced by the characters. The study aims to analyze and critically evaluate the representation of discrimination and violence against female characters in the novel. Employing Simon de Beauvoir's feminist theory within a descriptive qualitative framework, the research utilizes literary analysis methods for data collection. Findings are organized and analyzed through identification, description, explanation, and classification to address the research questions. The analysis reveals multiple forms of discrimination and violence against female characters, including stereotyping, subordination, neglect, and various types of abuse (psychological, physical, verbal, and domestic). Key examples include Westri, who faces stereotyping and verbal abuse due to her profession as a dancer; Leny, who experiences neglect and verbal/psychological violence related to infertility; and Luh Can/Luh Sandat, who suffers domestic violence encompassing psychological, verbal, and physical abuse. This research contributes to the understanding of gender-based discrimination and violence in Indonesian literature, highlighting the need for further exploration of these themes in contemporary works.
