Abstract

This study examines speech strategies used in criticism speech acts in the Layangan Putus series. The research aims to describe the types of speech strategies and the speech situation contexts underlying their use. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of utterances containing criticism speech acts in the Layangan Putus series. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques, and analyzed using pragmatic analysis based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The results show that criticism in the series is realized through four speech strategies, namely speaking directly without hedging, speaking directly with positive politeness, speaking directly with negative politeness, and speaking indirectly. The most dominant strategy is speaking directly without hedging, especially through imperative sentence forms and explicit performatives. The use of speech strategies is influenced by the speech situation context, particularly power relations and the level of familiarity between speaker and hearer. In general, the findings indicate that criticism in the series is not only used to express negative evaluation but also reflects the speaker’s effort to maintain social relations and politeness in interaction.

Abstract

This study analyzes the lexemes used in plagiarism-related reporting on the Koreaboo news portal through a lexical-semantic approach. The data consist of 141 English-language articles published between April 2023 and April 2024. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using content analysis. The findings show five lexemes used to frame plagiarism-related issues: plagiarize, copy, steal, borrow, and mimic. Among them, plagiarize denotes plagiarism lexically, while copy undergoes semantic narrowing, steal shifts metaphorically from physical theft to idea theft, borrow shows semantic broadening, and mimic refers to excessive imitation with negative evaluation. These findings indicate that Koreaboo constructs plagiarism meanings progressively through lexical choice and discourse context. Theoretically, the study supports the view that lexical meaning is strongly shaped by context. Practically, it shows that news language is not neutral, as it also shapes readers’ judgments about plagiarism issues.

Abstract

This research explored how sequence organization is used to build humor in podcasts, specifically in the episodes of "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" with Tom Hanks and Raditya Dika's podcast with Indro Warkop. Using a descriptive qualitative method based on Conversation Analysis, the research utilized Schegloff's (2007) sequence organization framework as the main tool for analysis, while Norrick's (1993) conversational joking theory, Hay's (2001) humor response model, and Berger's (1993) linguistic techniques of humor were used as additional reference frameworks. Through analysis, nine instances of humor sequences were uncovered in Tom Hanks' talk and four in that of Indro Warkop. The research disclosed that humor in both podcasts was majorly structurally dependent on non-minimal post-expansion, yet their implementation of it was quite different. Whereas Tom Hanks' jokes were mainly derived from a variety of adjacency pair types and sequences initiated by himself with quite compact punchline delivery and operated mostly through irony, exaggeration, and allusion, Indro's humor was mostly supported on question-answer pairs as structural points of entry and narratives in post-expansion that were gradually developing comic tension before punchline delivery through exaggeration, irony, and facetiousness. The study has brought to light that sequence organization was one of the major ways through which humor was engaged with in podcast talk collaboratively.
