Abstract

The pandemic has plunged us into a liminal situation and led us into an unknown situation. In this article, I propose an apophatic approach to cultivating spirituality in response to this prevailing uncertainty. Within the Christian spiritual tradition, two major approaches exist, i.e. the cataphatic (via affirmation) and the apophatic (via negation). While religious education often leans heavily towards the cataphatic approach rather than apophatic, I argue that in the face of uncertainty, religious education would benefit greatly from embracing the apophatic approach. One way to achieve this is by creating more space for artistic practices. Contemplative artistic practices, which yearn to find beauty apophatically, play a significant role in navigating religious education through uncertain times. The inclusion of artistic practices in religious education can deepen spirituality, help individuals navigate uncertainty, and enable them to find beauty amidst unknowing paths.

Abstract

The incident of suicide every year is a hot topic to talk about because it is one of the causes of the high mortality rate of mankind in the world. All circles of society now need to pay serious attention to this problem because the complexity of the problem in it consists of various aspects such as psychological, sociological, health. educational, cultural to theological. This paper aims to examine the vulnerability of suicide in Toraja society with the lens of health theology and psychoneuroimmunology. Using qualitative research methods with a literature study approach, this study shows that suicidal behavior occurs due to the inability to know and understand a healthy God in daily life which has an impact on instability of brain function and also an imbalance of the immune system in perpetrators who have suicidal ideation. From the theological and psychoneuroimmunological approaches it is found that religious beliefs and practices have an influence on the mental, social and physical health of the human being, in which the concept of a healthy God can generate healthy thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In this case, religious involvement has a significant correlation as a coping method for better mental health in minimizing all negative health behaviors, especially as a daily spiritual practice.

Abstract

Theology and popular culture are two things that are very important to see in today’s context. Many people are beginning to see popular culture as part of their lives and cannot be let go. This can be seen in music, which is not only popular culture but also part of the culture itself. There are many forms of understanding of music, both negative and positive. Hip-hop music is by far a trending music in the context of the younger generation. One of the users of this music is Tupac Amaru Shakur. He is both a legend and an icon of hip-hop music. His songs are still heard today and have become favorites in various circles. This is because his songs hold a variety of theological meanings and values that are quite deep; therefore, this article will examine the theological meaning and value of one of his songs, Ghetto Gospel.

Abstract

The intention of this paper is to reconstruct two concepts in the discourse of Christian soteriology and eschatology, namely predestination which only includes human being and heaven which is believed to be outside of this world. I argue that the realization of the kingdom of God in the world as a part of divine predestination provides a theological construction basis for soteriological and eschatological conversations that embrace the entire creation in God's glory. To defend my claim, I arrange three strands of argument. I start by reconstructing the concept of predestination, that from the beginning God had a purpose for creation that included all of His creatures. The purpose of creation is to make the world theatrum gloria Dei, the arena for the revelation of God's glory over His creation. Afterwards, I argue that the fulfillment of predestination was due to God's movement in the future that came to the present in His glory. Creation is not in the process of moving towards the future, but rather preparing itself for the coming/adventus of God. This leads to my next argument that the adventus of God in His glory causes the whole world to be transformed and transfigured into heaven, the dwelling place of God in the midst of all of His creation. For this reason, in several passages, I reject the concept of predestination which only includes humans, the rapture of believers at the end of time, and the total annihilation of the world at the coming of God in His glory.

Abstract

Who is the other or my neighbor?  This question is simple but contains a deeper meaning that needs to be reflected upon again.  Commonly, the meaning of the other or neighbors are  still limited to one particular tribe, clan, religion , or identity.  Therefore, this article aims to discover a more inclusive meaning of the other or neighbors t o achieve this goal, the authors will interpret Luke 10:25-37 using narrative and dialogical approaches to find the inclusive meaning of the other or neighbors and bring the narrative into dialogue with the thoughts of two great figures —Emmanuel Levinas and Martin Buber— who offer inclusive views about the other . The author uses the narrative interpretation method to draw meaning from the text into the context of this article. The aim is to offer a view about the other—neighbors or other people who do not share the same identity in order to show that the meaning of the other—some one or people how are different—surpass the shared identity with the self.

Abstract

This article attempts to review and analyze the challenges posed by the ecumenical crisis, both at the global level and in Indonesia. Several documents are used to analyze the extent to which the studies of ecumenical crisis have taken place, and then to see the similarities with the ecumenical crisis in Indonesia. The documents-based data are processed using qualitative software to see what the existing problems and the patterns are; related to the connection between the data. This article also focuses on analyzing the 2021-2023 PGI program, which distinguishes it from other articles that analyze the ecumenical crisis in a more general way, without going into analyzing the ecumenical council-related program.

Abstract

This study discusses land hegemony in Indonesia, a historical product of colonialism. It is rooted in agrarian policy, which created the term domein verklaring, where land, where proof of ownership cannot be shown, is claimed as state-owned land. This colonial logic continued to be inherited and persisted in land issues even when Indonesia became independent. This paper uses Frantz Fanon's postcolonial theory as an analytical instrument to see the relationship between land hegemony and colonial residue. It is also hoped that the use of Fanon's postcolonial theory can provide an important contribution to the church in the "new era" to reflect on faith and become a theoretical basis for church projects involved in social transformation. This paper has three findings. First, land hegemony is rooted in colonialism policies that are still inherited today in Indonesia. Second, for Fanon, decolonization is the only way to liberate the oppressed, and the prerequisite is taking back the most fundamental and concrete value, i.e land. Third, the theoretical basis of Fanon's postcolonial theory provides options for an engaged church project for the protest and process of social transformation.

Abstract

The role of the Holy Spirit is often seen as “complementary” in the Trinitarian relationship. Likewise, the role of women in mission narratives is also often seen as complementary. This study aims to elaborate on the concept of the Holy Spirit in the Trinitarian arche as the basis for gender equality for women in mission narratives. For this purpose, I reclaim the primacy of the role of the Holy Spirit in the Trinitarian arche as the basis for gender equality. Furthermore, I discuss several women’s mission theories to be analyzed based on a feminist perspective, specifically gender analysis. In the final part, I highlight the narrative of women on mission as the work of the Holy Spirit on mission history. I specifically delve into missionary women in the Nias context.
