Abstract

Is there a way to build peace without violence in Indonesia? The question arises as a reflection of the complexity of conflict in Indonesia. In answering this question, this article provides a description of the causes of conflict from conflict theory and seeks its equivalence with several conflict events in Indonesia. Furthermore, David P. Barash’s peacebuilding theory appears in this article as an alternative to building peace; specifically, Marianne Farina’s nonviolence peace theory becomes the author’s choice for peacebuilding in Indonesia. With the aim of providing a concrete example of a nonviolent peacebuilding approach, this article describes an interfaith dialogue using a local Indonesian tradition, namely eating Nasi Tumpeng, as a first step of the approach. This tradition provides a space for the creation of interfaith dialogue at the grassroots level to discuss conflicts using the values contained in this eating tradition, namely strong relational values between humans and God, fellow humans, and even the environment.

Abstract

The Sacrament of Penance, according to the teachings of the Catholic Church, is a means of forgiveness of sins and restoration of a personal relationship with God. Through this sacrament, God forgives man's sins and restores his relationship with Himself. The purpose of the sacrament is not only to absolve the recipient from sin, but also to encourage them to make a strong commitment to refrain from sin in the future. The principal objective of this study is to ascertain the comprehension of Catholics regarding the sacrament of penance and Catholics' participation in receiving the Sacrament. This research focuses on the parishioners of Santo Paulus Pulo Brayan Bengkel Medan. This research employs a qualitative methodology. Data were gathered through observation of the reception of the sacrament of penance, interviews with informants to ascertain their understanding and practice of receiving the sacrament of penance, and the examination of relevant documentation. This was followed by data analysis, data reduction, data presentation, source triangulation and technique triangulation. The research reveals that Catholics have poor understanding of the sacrament of penance. The groups that are more eager to receive the Sacrament of Penance are the groups of mothers, the elderly and children. We classify these findings into the following categories: Firstly, people's understanding of the sacrament of Penance is minimal, which affects their participation in receiving the sacrament. Secondly, the implementation aspect includes both the preparation and the execution phases. The research shows that most people are not adequately prepared for confession and are not ready for its execution. This fact shows the need to educate and motivate people through catechesis so that they have a correct understanding of the importance of the sacrament of Penance.

Abstract

This study seeks to enrich the contemporary discourse of the thought of Søren Kierkegaard by positing an analysis of the ecclesiology of the New Testament according to the Danish thinker’s critique of the crowd. Through a literature study on both topics, I try to indicate whether Kierkegaard would consider the church untruth based on its similarity to his depiction of the crowd. Such a literature study is delineated in a three-segmented explanation, each focusing on Kierkegaard’s view of the crowd, the New Testament portrayal of the church, and the intersections between the two. Eventually, I conclude that Kierkegaard would indeed perceive the church as an embodiment of the crowd and consider it untruth. Such a conclusion demands further study on the validity of Kierkegaard’s understanding of Christ, as it confirms the potential aporia that haunts his critique of the crowd when read in light of the New Testament ecclesiology.

Abstract

This study explores the traces of the desire for education historically and phenomenologically in Indonesia amid secularism and nationalism discourse. Several questions can be asked regarding the portrait of education amid the crush of secularism and nationalism. For example, what was the picture of the world of education and humans (as well as society) who were in the crush of secularism and nationalism? To address this question, I focus on the scope of locality, religious primordialism, and corruption as the primary problem. These three sections are reviewed to show the role of the desire for education in forming secularism and nationalism. Decentralization is a critical part of exploring the influence of locality in the formation of secularism and nationalism. Narratives of religious authorities show how religious primordialism affects the formation of secularism and nationalism.; on corruption, we are dealing with a systemic culture of corruption in both regional and central governments. Based on the three factors, I would like to highlight the portrait of education at that time and its role. From here, I move on to offer education on the desire that I borrowed from Timothy Schroeder to talk about motivation, enjoyment, and recognition that can shake and build human character. From this, I argue that education on desire is vital to manage human beings from the desire for hatred (religious), the desire to dominate, and the desire for political-economic satisfaction.

Abstract

Religious diversity is central to the Indonesian context. Since the Reformation, Indonesia has been mired in multifaceted crises such as self-determination conflicts (Aceh and Papua), identity politics, religious fundamentalism, terrorism, and social conflicts. One method of conflict resolution is interfaith dialogue. However, interfaith dialogue is insufficient to resolve the disputes. The limitation of this approach is that it disregards the importance of local issues and wisdom. Toba Batak is a tribe in North Sumatra where Christians, Muslims, and Parmalim coexist and live together. Dalihan Na Tolu explains that each human being has one essence in three persons, namely Hula-hula (blessing giver), Dongan Tubu (companion), and Boru (servant). Dalihan Na Tolu brings Christian, Muslim, and Parmalim into a trilogue. This research seeks to engage the concept of Dalihan Na Tolu with the idea of perichoresis of the Trinity, examining how this dialogue can shape a contextual understanding of God and Jesus Christ in the Toba Batak context. The pivotal inquiry pertains to integrating the concepts of Dalihan Na Tolu and perichoresis, fostering an imaginative model for interfaith dialogue within the Toba Batak context. Ultimately, this study proposes a contextual paradigm that promotes a trilogue among Christians, Muslims, and Parmalim, addressing Indonesia's complex tapestry of religious coexistence.

Abstract

Homosexuality is still an issue that has its pros and cons. Very few churches in Indonesia are open to those with homosexual orientation. Churches tend to reject and discriminate against homosexuals as actions that are against the Bible and against God’s will. This is due to the view of heteronormativity, which is the view that heterosexuality is the truth and must be owned. Heteronormativity is a colony culture that is still inherent today. It creates hegemony and domination between heteronormativity (colonizer) and homosexuality (colonized). However, how should the church respond to homosexuality in postcolonial discourse? The research was conducted using the literature study method by reviewing Homi K. Bhabha’s liminality theory. The research was conducted with the aim of being a postcolonial effort in providing space between the colonizer (heteronormativity) and the colonized (homosexuality) to conduct cultural negotiations. The results showed that Postcolonial ethics with the perspective of Bhabha’s liminality theory formed a relationship of cultural exchange by heteronormativity with homosexuality, creating an attitude of acceptance. This has an impact on the church's attitude that is inclusive of homosexuality and does not discriminate. The church should view homosexuality as a reality of gender diversity.

Abstract

This article explores the theological conception of humanity within the framework of technological advancement, particularly Transhumanism, through the lens of John of Damascus’s concept of Christ’s perichoresis. The perichoreticconcept demonstrates that Christ, as a single person, embodies two distinct natures—divinity and humanity. In perichoresis, these two natures, while distinct, inhabit one another, allowing for mutual presence and interaction. They give space to each other, encircle one another, and move towards one another in an interpenetrative yet unconfused union, remaining undivided and inseparable. In the Transhumanist era, human existence through robotic enhancements (bionic humans) mirrors the dynamic of perichoresis, representing the coexistence of two distinct elements: the biological and the robotic. These elements inhabit and interact with each other, complementing and permeating one another, without subsuming or eliminating either. Thus, the perichoresis of Christ, as articulated by John of Damascus, serves as a constructive metaphor for understanding human identity in an age of technological integration, which dynamics and becoming.

Abstract

There was a time when Chinese Christians in Indonesia were prohibited from using symbols such as dragons, tigers, and snakes, which some Christian groups considered representations of evil. Items depicting dragons were recommended to be discarded after being prayed over, as the dragon is often used as a symbol of evil in the Bible. However, in Chinese culture, the dragon is seen as a positive and sacred symbol representing strength, luck, and wisdom. Birth rates increase during the Year of the Dragon, as it is believed to bring good fortune and success. This research examines the correlation between the understanding of Jesus in Christian belief and the dragon in Chinese culture, aiming to resolve the confusion faced by Chinese Christians in Indonesia regarding their dual identity. The dragon mentioned in the Bible is difficult to comprehend from the perspective of Chinese culture because the concepts differ. For Chinese Christians, exploring the symbolic meaning of the dragon in the Bible should be accompanied by a deeper understanding of their own cultural anthropology. It is important to note that the dragon in the Bible actually stems from Western cultural concepts, and understanding this difference is crucial for spiritual clarity. Failure to address this misconception can lead to the neglect or abandonment of Chinese cultural heritage, while considering European culture as superior. Therefore, it is essential to appreciate these conceptual differences as unique cultural riches without rejecting or replacing them, allowing each culture to value its own symbols while maintaining a rich and diverse cultural identity.
