Abstract

Background: Writing is an activity that cannot be kept away from teaching and learning activities in schools. Writing activities can make students be active and develop in learning activities and can stimulate the existence of stringing skills and composing words. Purpose: The research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the image media in increasing the writing skills of the first grader of elementary. Design and methods: The research applied case study methods with descriptive analysis techniques. Samples in this study were taken from SDN Cibinong 01 with a population of 20 grade 1 students consisting of 10 male students and 10 female students. Results: The results obtained from the study showed that the effectiveness of the image media used to hone the initial writing skills of grade 1 students at SDN Cibinong 01 as a whole can be said to have been good with a percentage of 85%. This shows the effectiveness of the use of image media is effective enough to be used to hone the initial word writing skills in grade 1 elementary school students during the pandemic.

Abstract

Background: Elementary school students often complain on writing assignments from their teachers. As a consequence, the elementary students are not enthusiastic about understanding English writing. Purpose: This study aims to identify the technique of teaching English writing for elementary students. Design and methods: The method used is library research method as an activity carried out systematically to collect, process, and conclude data using certain methods/techniques. Results: The study reveals elementary students in low grade (I, II, III) uses creative writing, media word games and high class (IV, V, VI) uses collaborative writing.

Abstract

Background: People attempt to express themselves by producing utterances. The utterances do not only contain grammatical structures and words but people also perform actions through the utterances. In producing an utterance, the speaker regularly anticipates the hearer to recognize his/her intention. The study that covers this is the speech act. Purpose: This research attempted to analyze the classification of speech acts proposed by Searle, namely representatives, directives, expressive, commissives, and declarations in the movie script of Thor: Ragnarok. Design and methods: A qualitative method was used in this research. The object of this study is the movie script of Thor: Ragnarok. Results: The result showed that there are 189 data included in the category Representative which covers 38% out of the total data, 183 data included in the category Directive which covers 37% out of the total data, 77 data included in the category Expressive which covers 15% out of the total data, 50 data included in the category Expressive which covers 10% out of the total data, and 2 data included in the category Declarations.

Abstract

Background: The 21st century is marked by a drastic development of computer technology, which caused the growing interest in the hypertext. Despite the fact that it is mainly associated with the informational technology, the hypertext has also been a center of cross-disciplinary researches, as well as in the field of text linguistics. Purpose: Hence, the present article deals with the hypertextuality phenomenon in the emotive prose. Design and methods: By implementing the methods of comparative, structural, contextual, and intertextual analysis, the compositional and linguistic means of its representation are investigated on the basis of the novel by J. Barnes A History of the World in 10 ½ Chapters. Results: Julian Barnes is one of the most popular contemporary British writers. He is considered a postmodernism icon, whereas an American writer and critic J. C. Oates calls him a “pre-postmodernist”. He is an author to more than 20 novels. A History of the World in 10 ½ Chapters (1989) is a novel where the author experimented with a form. The book consists of ten novellas and Parenthesis. As far as the novel is considered an icon of postmodernistic literature, the revelation of a hypertext system there makes it possible to claim hypertextuality a distinctive marker of a postmodernistic perception of the world.

Abstract

Background: This research article is focusing on annotated translation to describe and give plausible reasons in solving the translation problems. Purpose: The purposes of this study are: (1) to attain information concerning the difficulties faced by the researcher while translating the source text, and (2) to give plausible translation reasons to the difficulties. Design and methods: Introspective and retrospective methods are employed to explore the plausible translation on Bicycle Shop Murder novel. Data findings are validated using translation strategies by Chesterman. Results:As the researcher tries to figure out problems during the process of translation by giving annotation for each data, it shows that from the 30 data chosen to be analyzed, there are: two (2) literal translation, two (2) loan, two (2) calque, two (2) transposition, two (2) clause structure change, two (2) phrase structure change, two (2) synonymy, two (2) antonymy, four (4) distribution change consisting of two (2) compression and two (2) expansion, two (2) paraphrase, two (2) naturalization, two (2) coherence change, two (2) explicitness change from implicit into explicit, and two (2) interpersonal change used to solve these problems.

Abstract

Background: Politeness is a common strategy that is used by most of speakers; even the English native speakers do such thing to their counterparts as well. It is especially appropriate when someone is making a request, talking on the telephone or engaging in a pleasant conversation with someone else. However, there are different opinions about what is and is not considered as polite since there are distinctions in culture from one country to other countries all over the world. Purpose: research aims to find out the negative politeness strategies which is used by Colleen McGuire in her utterances as the main character of the novel Savage Land. Design and methods: This research use a qualitative method. The data source that is used in this research is taken from the dialogues uttered by Colleen McGuire as the main female character in the novel Savage Land. Results: From the 10 strategies of negative politeness strategy according to Brown and Levinson’s theory, the writer found the total of 4 strategies which was used by the main female character, Colleen McGuire, in the novel Savage Land. Those 4 strategies are hedge, be pessimistic, minimize the imposition, and impersonalize the speaker to the addressee.

Abstract

Background: Figurative language are quite popular in song’s lyric because we can hide our messages or what we had experienced or felt. That became a reason why we should learn more about kinds of figurative language in order to understand more about the real meanings that are conveyed in the songs. Purpose: The aim for this research is to discover the kinds of figurative language in three songs of Disney Movies Original Soundtrack. Design and methods: In this research, the researcher used qualitative methods. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Mezo’s theory of figurative language. The source of data for this research are from Disney movies original soundtrack namely, the song entitled “Lead the way” from Raya and the last dragon movie, “Love, brave and true” from Mulan movie and “How does a moment last forever” from the Beauty and the Beast movie. The data from this research are the sentences that had figurative language. Result: After doing an analysis, there are 21 data appeared. The researcher discovered 6 kinds of figurative language from those data namely, Hyperbole (6 data), Metaphor (5 data), Personification (4 data), Litotes (2 data), Simile (2 data), and Synecdoche (2 data).

Abstract

Background: Using the media, the students are able to do proper sorting and treatment in learning activities. Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of the application of serial image media on writing narrative text skills. Design and methods: This research uses a quantitative approach. The type used is a Quasi Experimental Design research, this design has a control group, but does not fully function to control the external variables that affect the implementation of the experiment. The research design used is the Non Equivalent Control Group Design. Results: The result showed that the experimental group obtained an average score of 82.86 and the control group obtained an average score of 71.18. the use of serial image media has a positive effect on writing narrative text skills of stu-dents in grade V Cipinang Besar Utara 7 Elementary school.

Abstract

Background: To some students, learning Indonesian is very boring especially for students who are not used to read and write. Purpose: This study aims to improve the Indonesian Language Learning Outcomes in grade II students at Sukajadi 02 Elementary School in the Indonesian language subject. Design and methods: This classroom action research refers to the Kemmis and Mc Taggart Model which is commonly referred to as the spiral model consisting of four stages. The planning stage, the action stage, the observation stage, the reflection stage. Results: The result showed that Through the Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach, learning Indonesian in reading and writing is easier to apply in everyday life that students encounter. It can improve Indonesian language learning outcomes in literacy.

Abstract

Background: Translation is an activity of changing meaning from source language into target language. There are a lot of problems encounter by the translator in translating text such as problem in translating literature text, cultural items, idiomatic expression, and many others. Tarian Bumi is an Indonesian novel written by Oke Rusmini where in the novel there are a lot of cultural words, cultural items, especially Balinese culture. Purpose: The purposes of this research article are to categorize the cultural words using Newmark’s theory and to analyze the translation strategies of those cultural words in Tarian Bumi novel and its translation. Design and methods: This research article applied qualitative methods and using documentation technique in collecting the data. In categorizing the cultural words, Newmark’s theory is applied. To find out the translation strategies used by the translator, the theory of Baker of Translation strategy is used. Results: The cultural words found in Tarian Bumi novel and its translation are 58 data. From Newmark’s theory of cultural words category, there are 4 categories found, they are: ecology with 1 data, material culture with 14 data, social culture with 6 data, and organization, concept, ideas with 35 data. After the data are categorized based on the cultural category, then writer analyzed the translation strategies. The result is there are only 5 translation strategies found. The strategies found are: 1) translation by more general word 9 data, 2) translation by using cultural substitution 12 data, 3) translation by using loan word or loan word plus explanation 25 data, 4) descriptive equivalent 11 data, 5) translation by omission with only 1 data.
