Abstract

One attempt to alleviate poverty of fishermen is, among others, by creating alternative income generating activities to facilitate additional income. The activities are implemented through diversification of household income’s sources. This enables fishermen to carry out jobs other than fisheries. For coastal and small island inhabitants, this situation also serves as an effective effort to conserve marine resources. The reason is because alternative income generating activities could reduce the high dependency of fishery households on marine resources. This paper aims to assess alternative income-generating activities implemented through the Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Program (COREMAP). It is based on two COREMAP study sites, ie. the City of Batam in the Province of Riau Islands and the district of Pangkajene Islands (Pangkep) in the Province of South Sulawesi. The study applied quantitative method (survey) and qualitative method (in-depth interview, FGD, and observation) to collect the data. However, this paper only analyzed the qualitative data, particularly on the supporting and challenges factors in implementing income-generating activities. The result of data analysis shows that the alternative income generated activities offered by the program tend to neglect the work habits of the targeted groups. For example, the activities requested target population to work collectively in a group. However, in reality, they are not accustomed to such manner. Moreover, the initiated income generated activities took quite long time to harvest, while the target population normally carried out quick yielding jobs.

Abstract

Contraceptive use is one of the essential influential factors to the birth rate of Indonesia. This article aims to identify the profile of contraceptive use in rural and urban areas based on the socio-economic and demographic characteristics as well as the influential factors. This study conducted a further analysis of Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 (PMA2020) survey in 2015, by applying univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. The results of the analysis show a similar average number of children for both rural and urban areas; this situation is in accordance with the program of National Population and Family Planning (BKKBN). In addition, the educational and economic status of women in union of childbearing age in rural areas has improved along with the increasing number of women graduated from senior high school as well as the improvement of their wealth. However, many women in rural and urban areas never have been visited by family planning officers as well as do not have health insurance, such as BPJS. The finding of the study also shows that the higher the economic status of women in rural areas, the higher their chances to use contraception. Conversely, the higher the economic status of women in urban areas, the lower their participation in family planning program. Therefore, specific, intensive and equal interventions to IEC and advocacy programs are needed for both rural and urban areas.

Abstract

The border issue has become a significant problem in Southeast Asia since the end of the Second World War. Focused in the border regions in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, this paper looks at the factors which have come to the fore, such as, those around economic gaps, cultural and social relations and movement of people who are not listed or are undocumented immigrants in the cross borders. The developments in the borders contribute to the improvements to the area which we can see in the development of trade contacts for instance, through the Mekong River to Luang Prabang and onto the remote areas in the eastern part of Laos. Such conditions are due to the development of a trans-national economy, new economic growth and trade activities. This study gives a better understanding of the trade contacts in the border regions in Southeast Asia, especially a better understanding of such issues that may be shared by Indonesia. Keywords: Population mobility, trade contacts, the Golden Triangle and regional cooperation

Larger household size increases proportion of food expenditure, education expenditure and health expenditure. Stages child household and third generation household have the highest influence on education expenditure and health expenditure. Meanwhile, urban household has the largest impact on the proportion of food expenditure, education expenditure and health expenditure.  It is also found that households with the highest proportion of food expenditure and with the smallest expenditures on education and health are the ones who have heads of household who are working as free labors or family workers.

Abstract

In the past, women migrants are considered as passive migrants following their parents or husbands. However, the increasing number of Indonesian women migrating to work abroad, even outnumbering men, suggests the importance of understanding the reasons underlined their movements. This article examines the decision-making process of working abroad among the returned Indonesian women migrants. A quantitative approach was used to analyze secondary data from several government institutions. Also, the qualitative approach was utilized to understand the migration decision-making process. The study was conducted in Cilacap District, one of the major labor migrant sending districts in Indonesia. The result showed that women have no other choice than working abroad, mainly due to the economic reason. Moreover, the initiative to work abroad commonly comes from the women themselves, while other family members, especially father and husband, only give their consent. It can be said that women are more autonomous and self-assured when deciding to work abroad.

Abstract

The rate of population growth that significantly transpires in the Riau Islands Province will certainly bring an impact that is quite complex on the social and economic problems, such as high unemployment, and criminality. There are three demographic factors that affect the rate of population growth; fertility, mortality and migration. Anticipatory measures should be taken by the local government of the Riau Islands province in order to anticipate problems that will arise through harmonized policies both of which deal with the institutional aspects as well as the substance of the policy that will be applied. This paper is based on the 2010 study in the Riau Islands Province. By using the approach of both quantitative and qualitative studies, the data excavation in the study is done by the distribution of questionnaires and the interview of stakeholders. Afterwards, the data collected will be analyzed using content analisys method The results of this study formulate several recommendations for policies that address the issues of family planning, the prevention of the spread of HIVI AIDS and the harmonization of control of the migration population. Keywords: Formulation, Policies, Local Government, Harmony, Population Development, and Family Development
