Abstract

The History curriculum in Malawi has experienced reforms due to the various political periods that have dictated its direction. The agency for a revised curriculum first appeared upon independence when the country adopted a colonial education system. The paper argues that such a process was hijacked by the then liberation movement that had emerged victorious against white colonial rule – the Malawi Congress Party. This meant erasing narratives that would otherwise challenge the government’s legitimacy and incumbency. Through a review of the current History syllabi which evolved from a 2013 curriculum review and a close reading of the recommended history textbooks, the paper argues that the erasure of such counter-narratives remains intact to this day, basically for the same reasons they were excluded from the initial post-independence curriculum opposition to political hegemony. It, therefore, argues for the re-inclusion of these multiple histories to create complete narratives that have otherwise been fragmented by revisionism.

Abstract

The coexistence of kaum mudo (Muhammadiyah and Sumatera Thawalib) and kaum tuo (Perti) in the context of Islamic education in Minangkabau reflects a significant transformation within the traditional framework of this educational system. This study aims to explore this transformation and its implications. Utilizing ethnographic methods, including participant observation and interviews, the research delves into the dynamics of Islamic education in Minangkabau society. Findings reveal a complex interplay between traditional practices and modern influences, as younger generations navigate their identity within an evolving educational landscape. While older generations uphold traditional teaching methods and values, younger individuals engage with contemporary educational approaches and technologies. Despite these apparent differences, there exists a symbiotic relationship between kaum mudo and kaum tuo, wherein traditional wisdom is passed down alongside modern knowledge. This coexistence fosters a unique learning environment that blends heritage with innovation, preserving the essence of Islamic education while embracing contemporary advancements. The study concludes that this coexistence serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Islamic education in Minangkabau, ensuring its relevance and continuity in the face of societal changes.

Abstract

The emergence of post-modernism in the mid-20th century marked a seismic shift in historical knowledge, challenging long-held assumptions about the relationship between language, truth, and reality. This paper explores the profound impact of post-modernism on the discipline of history, focusing on its influence on the concept of alternate history. Post-modernist thought contends that language constructs our understanding of the world rather than merely representing reality, leading to the recognition that there is no single, objective truth in history. The paper delves into the critiques and alternative frameworks notable historians propose within this post-modernist framework. It begins by examining Alun Munslow's concept of "deconstructing history," which encourages historians to critically analyze historical narratives and acknowledge the subjectivity inherent in interpretation. Keith Jenkins's "own-sakism" is introduced as a response to the post-modernist critique of historical objectivity, advocating for acknowledging and embracing historians' subjectivity. The paper also explores Hayden White's "metahistory," which critiques the narrative structure of history and invites historians to be more self-conscious about narrative choices. It concludes by highlighting the enduring legacy of post-modernism in history, emphasizing the importance of reflexivity, transparency, and critical self-examination in the pursuit of historical knowledge. The paper contends that post-modernism has not only challenged historical objectivity but has also opened up new possibilities for a more inclusive and diverse historiography.

The cultural heritage building, the Kavallerie-Artillerie building, has become a medium for historical exploration as an important building of its time that represents the toughness and splendor of the Mangkunegaran Legion. This article aims to examine the history behind the Kavallerie-Artillerie, a bit of the historical story about the Mangkunegaran Legion, architectural art and the current condition of the Kavallerie-Artillerie. The results of this research show that the Mangkunegara Legion is a special military unit owned by the Mangkunegaran Duchy and is considered by historians to be the first indigenous army unit in Indonesia, where their main headquarters is called the Kavallerie-Artillerie. In fact, both the information about the heritage building and the Mangkunegaran Legion, as well as the current condition of this cultural heritage building appear to have been untouched by the authorities' revitalization agenda and its function as a residential area for local residents.
