Abstract

New media is one of the rapid development of technology that makes the exchange of information happen more quickly. Communication patterns in this information technology era are convergent. This is due to the current technological capabilities that enable existing information to be disseminated widely and swiftly. The convergence characteristics of this information technology era lead to the transformation of conventional media into new digital forms. The massive amount of information that can be disseminated through the media makes it one of the big power holders to shape an image. The greater the influence in new media, the greater the tendency for the information to be known and understood. The dissemination of information using digital media is practiced by the African Region to construct its own image for the purpose of changing the international public's view of the region. In this study, a qualitative method with a case study approach is implemented. The research findings revealed that the African Region has utilized digital diplomacy, public diplomacy and the concept of multi-track diplomacy to improve its image. However, there is a need for a better coordination from governments in African countries to develop a positive image.

Abstract

Twenty years have passed since the US occupation of Iraq, yet the deployment of the US military in the Middle Eastern country remains today. Initially, the US argued that the primary aim for invasion was the disarmament of the mass weapons (WMD). Further on, they claimed that the intervention was to help establish the Iraq democracy. The final justification for the troops to stay was to combat ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). This raises the question, what are the true motives of the US foreign policy in Iraq? This research was conducted using a qualitative method by analyzing textual data from the previous studies, official documents, and media reports. The data are analyzed using foreign policy theory related to national interests. The findings of this study indicate that the main motive why the US military continue to exist in Iraq is to maintain its power and hegemony in the region. In line with that, the US also has economic motives, such as oil and arms business.

Abstract

Indonesia as the world's largest producer and consumer of palm oil is experiencing considerable challenges due to the enactment of the The European Union (EU) Parliament Resolution on the use of palm oil and on overcoming the issue of deforestation. The Union issued a RED policy aiming at directing the European community to use energy-efficient and emission-free fuels. The regulation comprises a rejection of palm oil and its derivative products. The ban on importing such products imposed by the European Union has caused a decrease in Indonesia's GDP by 1155.28 million Euros. In addition, this impacted the employment sector, particularly the oil palm farmers who experience a decrease in income. Despite the issuance of the European Union policy that prohibit or restrict palm oil import, the EU has dependence on Indonesia’s palm oil since they can not produce the oils on a large scale in order to meet their needs. This is a qualitative study and the data collection technique is the heritage study methods obtained from journal, scientific journals on similar topics. As for the theoretical analyses, the mercantilism approach with the aim to use economic policies to maximize the state’s wealth as a means of political power is implemented.

Abstract

As China is strengthening its global position, it has gradually begun to exert its influence in the world economy. This can be observed in its move as investors to countries on the Asia and Africa continents, a position used to be dominated by western countries and institutions, as seen in the International Monetary Fund . However, China’s rising economy and influence have allowed itself to become an alternative source of funding for many countries formerly dependent on the International Monetary Fund, on other western related countries or on particular institutions due to the restrictions the loans carry. Countries such as Indonesia views China as an alternate source for their foreign direct investment, manifested in the construction of the Indonesian High Speed Rail project, the projects of Huawei, and in the Indonesian energy sector. China’s potency to enter into and expand in Indonesia is supported by the lack of restrictions towards the funding, if compared to the ones provided by western institutions. As a result, China has successfully presented itself as an alternate choice for many countries who wish to seek financial support to further their development.

This research aims to find out the impact of the development of legal politics on the law enforcement system in Indonesia and the existence of legal politics in the law enforcement system in this country. The method used in this research is a normative juridical approach. The results of the study show that Legal politics has a big role in law enforcement, often in enforcing the law the role of politics is not applied properly, where law enforcers prioritise the interests of political elites. The impact of legal politics on law enforcement has a negative impact on society and the justice system. The law should be enforced based on the principles of justice, without political interference or involvement. Law enforcement officers should not give different treatment to anyone because everyone has equal rights under the law.
