Abstract

Amputation in military service leading to discharge and transition difficulty is the Philippines was still yet to resolve, a focus on training the jungle and sea division of the military was made in order to train the soldiers for the different terrains that they will engage the rebels on. Over the years, numerous studies were already made on the narratives of the discharged military veterans for both honorable and dishonorable discharges yet there was little to no studies centered around the lives of the medically discharged amputees after leaving the organization. This study aims to narrate the lived experiences of the medically discharged amputees, more specifically a qualitative research study that details their personal lives after leaving the organization. A total of five (5) medically discharged amputees were interviewed face to face in this study and a total of four (4) themes were generated which are ‘Post-Medical Discharge Experience’, ‘Overcoming Adjustments’, ‘Self-Concept’, and 'Personal Goals’. The results showed the difficulty of the amputees to accept their new condition and the engagement in drinking alcohol or using cigarettes to lighten their burdens. The importance of financial stability was also widely discussed fueling a discussion for the consideration of the benefits that the amputees do receive after leaving the organization.

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is a concern in higher education, often linked to students’ academics and emotional well-being. This study examined the mathematics anxiety level and academic performance of students enrolled in GEC 002-Mathematics in the Modern World, a general education course at the University of La Salette. It specifically explored students’ demographic profile, academic performance, and mathematics anxiety level across the following factors: physical and emotional, assessment, and social. Differences or relationships between their anxiety levels and their profile or performance were also tested. This descriptive-correlational study involved 265 students from five departments, selected through stratified sampling. Data gathered through a questionnaire on mathematics anxiety and students’ grades in GEC 002 were analyzed using frequency and percentage, weighted mean, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. Most students performed well academically, with moderate overall anxiety. Assessment-related factors ranked highest, followed by social factors, while physical and emotional symptoms were less evident. No significant differences in mathematics anxiety were found across age, gender, or department. However, students with “excellent” academic performance reported significantly lower anxiety (p = 0.003). A weak, statistically significant positive correlation  emerged between mathematics anxiety and academic performance, suggesting that, in this context, anxiety may function as a slight motivator rather than a debilitating hindrance, implying other factors play a considerable role. An intervention program was proposed to promote academic success and emotional well-being. Although limited to a single institution and based on self-reported, cross-sectional data, the study highlights the importance of addressing mathematics anxiety in HEIs.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between weather conditions and stock market performance in the Philippines, a tropical country characterized by high temperature variability and an active financial market. The research addresses a gap in local empirical studies exploring whether daily temperature fluctuations affect market behavior. Using a quantitative correlational design, the study analyzed annual data from 2014 to 2023 on minimum and maximum temperatures (sourced from PAGASA) and Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) values (sourced from Yahoo Finance). The data were analyzed using SPSS, employing the Pearson correlation coefficient with a significance level of 0.05. Results revealed a weak positive correlation between maximum temperature and stock prices (r = 0.35, p = 0.3261) and a moderate negative correlation between minimum temperature and stock prices (r = –0.47, p = 0.1664), both of which were statistically insignificant. These findings suggest that temperature variations do not meaningfully predict stock market movements in the Philippine context. The study concludes that market fluctuations are primarily driven by macroeconomic and global factors rather than weather-related sentiment. It recommends that investors rely on technical and fundamental analyses instead of climate-based speculation.

Abstract

Master teachers in the Philippines play a vital role in guiding and supporting fellow teachers through mentoring, coaching, and providing technical assistance; thus, they are expected to remain updated and skilled to effectively help colleagues meet classroom challenges. Since no standardized instrument currently exists to measure their skills, this study designed a validated tool that would accurately evaluate these. This mixed-method study utilizing the exploratory sequential design involved 17 participants for the qualitative phase, and a larger group of respondents for the quantitative phase. In the qualitative phase, teacher-mentees shared their experiences and described how master teachers provide mentoring and technical assistance. These insights served as the foundation for developing the initial items of the instrument. In the quantitative phase, the crafted tool underwent Rasch analysis to test its reliability and validity. The results showed acceptable levels of reliability (person reliability = 0.84; item reliability = 0.97) and validity (variance explained = 62.5%; CVI = 0.96; Infit/Outfit MNSQ = 0.54–1.14), confirming that the instrument effectively measured the intended constructs. The findings suggest that the developed MenTeASk Questionnaire was both valid and reliable in assessing the master teachers’ mentoring and technical assistance skills; hence, its use is recommended particularly in the Division of Aklan, Philippines.

Abstract

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are considered important areas in today’s society. However, it can be observed that fewer STEM graduates enter the workforce and contribute to the nation’s progress. This can be attributed to students' lack of interest in pursuing STEM careers. One factor influencing the interest in STEM is the students' attitude toward their science subjects. The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between attitudes toward science and students’ interest in careers related to STEM. Further, this research investigated which aspect of attitudes toward science can significantly predict the level of interest in pursuing STEM. An online survey was conducted on 243 grade 9 students of Pasig City Science High School to gather data regarding their attitudes toward science and their interest in STEM careers. The survey results were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results revealed a moderate positive relationship between the students’ attitude toward science and their interest in STEM careers (r = .54, p < .001). Meanwhile, multiple regression analysis disclosed that the aspects of attitudes toward science, namely the students’ interest in science, their value for science, and their confidence in science, can predict their interest in STEM (F(3,239)=85.43, p < .001, R2 = .52), explaining 52% of the variance. However, among these aspects, the students’ value for science is the most predictive and was the only significant predictor (β = .65, p < .001).

Abstract

In the dynamic landscape of education, the quality of teaching remains a fundamental determinant of student success. Understanding teachers’ competence across multiple professional domains not only highlights their strengths but also identifies gaps that may limit instructional effectiveness and student learning outcomes. This study aims to examine the competence of public school teachers in the Philippines across the seven domains of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST), with the goal of identifying both areas of excellence and opportunities for professional growth. Employing a descriptive cross-sectional research design, the study surveyed 300 teachers from a range of large and small public secondary schools in Palawan, Philippines. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire aligned with the seven PPST domains and analyzed using mean scores to determine the levels of teacher competence. Results indicate that teachers generally demonstrate high to very high competence, with particular strengths observed in content mastery, classroom management, and professional commitment. Conversely, lower ratings were noted in domains such as differentiated instruction, actively seeking feedback, and implementing innovative teaching practices, signalling the need for targeted interventions. These findings underscore the importance of focused professional development programs that address specific areas of need, thereby fostering a more balanced, effective, and innovative teaching workforce. By addressing these gaps, policymakers and educational leaders can enhance teaching quality, ultimately supporting improved student learning outcomes and advancing the overall standards of Philippine public education.

Abstract

Using Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Evaluation Model of reaction, learning, behavior, and results, this study investigates how students view English assessment in the Indonesian Merdeka Curriculum. This study involved 41 high school students who answered a valid and reliable Likert scale questionnaire, using a quantitative descriptive design. Students' perceptions were generally positive, according to descriptive statistical analysis conducted using SPSS 26. Most students acknowledged that the assessment was fair, relevant to classroom learning, and motivating. In addition, students reported behavioral changes such as increased classroom participation, but they experienced improvements in learning, especially in vocabulary and confidence. Although some students remained neutral, students said that the assessment helped their overall language development. The clarity of instructions, adequacy of time, and comfort during the assessment were also issues. These results indicate that, although the Merdeka Curriculum assessment method is in line with basic principles, some elements of practice need to be improved in order to optimize students' learning experiences and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Good governance, evidence-based planning, and sustainable rural development all rely on correct rural public service performance predictions. This study presents a Cross-Attention Multimodal Transformer developed for binary time-series classification of service conditions in the areas of agriculture, health, and environment at the level of the local government unit (LGU). Using bidirectional cross-attention layers, the model mixes several temporal signals so that healthcare and agriculture-environment streams can interact with one another. Using weighted uncertainty and calibration-awareness in a loss function helps to guarantee that the confidence scores are properly calibrated. With AUCs of 83.00% (agriculture), 79.40% (environment), and 63.90% (healthcare), which is lower, experimental results on a rural public service dataset indicate great discriminative and calibration performance. With 61.50%, 23.10%, and 18.90% respectively, the Brier scores suggest that the forecasts for health care and the environment are well calibrated. These findings suggest that cross-attention multimodal transformers may be quite useful in producing precise binary predictions of rural service results. At the LGU level, this would enable data-driven decision-making support.
