Abstract

Water scarcity is a pressing issue in many parts of the world. One innovative solution to this problem is rainwater harvesting, which involves collecting and storing rainwater for later use. The study aims to install a rainwater harvesting and treatment system to :1. Reduce water loss by its running-off.2 Meeting the demands of increasing water. 3. Reducing groundwater contamination.4. Increase available water during dry season.5. Reduce flooding and potentially prevent flooding of roads. This is a descriptive research method and is purely qualitative. It used Focus Group Discussion (FGD), Interview, and secondary data to get the necessary information from three Consultants, three Executives, and four Professors who are experts in the field. The study found that the rainwater harvesting and treatment facility would be a feasible project. It would minimize water consumption costs and reduce flooding in the city, with potential for replication by other universities, governments, and private entities.

Abstract

This research study explored and established the dimensions representing ethical accounting practices among Certified Public Accountants. The respondents were Certified Public Accountants from different sectors of the profession in Davao del Norte, of legal age and with at least two years of experience in accounting who were chosen through stratified random sampling. Responses from the Key Informant Interview were analyzed and the item statements were then used as initial statement pool for the survey. Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index for sampling adequacy, Bartlett’s test of sphericity for testing the multidimensionality, principal component analysis for data reduction, and VARIMAX for rotation. Thirty-one (31) original items were surveyed and processed through exploratory factor analysis and only twenty-six (26) items of ethical accounting practices passed the ≥.40 threshold after ten iterations which loaded to eight dimensions. The identified eight generated dimensions of ethical accounting practices were moral philosophies, personal values and principles, religiosity, objectivity, reliance to authority, integrity, professional behavior and public_welfare.

Abstract

This research examines the experiences of non-social science majors teaching in teaching social science subjects in senior high school. It utilized a mixed-method approach. A survey and an interview were utilized to collect the data. Sixty respondents took the survey to identify their teaching experiences. Five out-of-field social science teachers who were severely challenged were invited to an interview. Results revealed that more female teachers were engaged in out-of-field teaching. Moreover, teachers aged 26-30 are more likely to be assigned to out-of-field teaching. Also, both public and private schools experience the challenge of out-of-field teaching. Most of the teachers engaged in this scenario were non-education graduates. Core subjects under social sciences are the common subjects taught by non-social science majors. The survey reveals the experiences of non-social science majors in their mastery of the subject handled, ability to prepare scholarly learning material, classroom pedagogy/classroom activity, and psychosocial guidance to students for college preparations. It is discovered that non-social science majors always adhere to the challenges posed by out-of-field teaching. However, psychosocial guidance to students for college preparation was the domain that makes it challenging for non-social science majors to overcome. Five themes emerged based on this study; out-of-field teaching experiences, challenges of non-social science majors, coping mechanisms employed by non-social science majors, perception of non-social majors, and roles of school administrators. The COPE approach was devised to aid teachers, school administrators, and the Department of Education to mitigate the challenges posed by out-of-field teaching experiences.

Abstract

This mixed-method research aimed to assess student readiness on the use of blended learning modalities at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy. It examined the level of readiness towards self-directed learning, online student engagement, and the level of student satisfaction among the midshipmen to assess the effectiveness of these lesson delivery blends. 1CL, 3CL, and 4CL midshipmen officially enrolled in the 1st Semester of the School Year 2022-2023 were surveyed online to establish their demographic profile, their level of readiness in terms of self-directed learning and online student engagement readiness, and their level of student satisfaction. A semi-formal interview asked the faculty about their preferred blend or combination of modalities. The SPSS was utilized to analyze the results. When grouped according to year level, 4CL Midshipmen demonstrated lower Self-Directed Learning Readiness and Online Student Engagement than the senior cadets. When grouped according to program, BS Marine Transportation midshipmen were more self-directed and satisfied than the BS Marine Engineering midshipmen. Faculty favored the face-to-face and online asynchronous blend. Gleaning on the results of the study, an assessment tool (PMMA Blended Modalities Readiness Survey for Incoming 4CL Midshipmen) was proposed to address the identified challenges. The recommendations also included the incorporation of the proposed assessment tool into the Quality Operations Manual to serve as guidelines in the implementation of blended learning modalities. A competence assessment between colleges, strengthened collaboration between the IT department and the colleges, midshipmen digital literacy training, and faculty training on digital tools for online learning facilitation were also recommended.

Abstract

The Philippines is one of the single largest nationality groups in the maritime and shipping sectors; as a result, the nation's efforts to modernize the skills of the engine cadets are significant. This study aimed to assess the engine cadets' skill level in relation to the requisite 21st-century skills while they were receiving shipboard training at TORM Shipping Philippines Inc. It used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. The paper used mean, standard deviation, and Mann-Whitney for comparing differences between two independent groups for the statistical treatment analyses of the quantitative data. Thematic analysis of the descriptive data provided by the interviewees involved coding and identifying common themes, patterns, and responses. The findings revealed that the engine cadets were competent in three (3) areas but needed to be more competent in the remaining area (inventive thinking). This signified that the engine cadets need supplemental training in the areas where they are less apt to improve their skills in all variables, especially 21st-century skills. The management of maritime schools and policymakers must address the common factors that prevent engine cadets from acquiring 21st-century skills, according to the study.

Abstract

The Philippines is one of the single biggest nationality blocs in the maritime and shipping industries; thus, the country's efforts to improve the Maritime Program in secondary and tertiary education are highly significant. This study aimed to determine the level of competence of Maritime Senior High School students and gather accounts of implementing the maritime program in the basic education system in Negros Occidental. It adopted the mixed-methods sequential explanatory design. The paper used mean, standard deviation, and Mann-Whitney for comparing differences between two independent groups for the statistical treatment analysis of the quantitative data. Coding and identifying common themes, patterns, and responses were used in the thematic analysis of the descriptive information provided by the interviewees. The findings revealed that the competence of the SHS students in the pre-baccalaureate maritime program was at the skill level in terms of introduction to maritime careers and introduction to marine transportation and engineering, and at the leadership level in terms of introduction to maritime safety, irrespective of the school enrolled and preferred program. The development of the quality system and support, execution of the curriculum, administration of assessments, and sustained and continuous pursuit of excellence that comprise the ideal practices of the school explained the current findings. Laying the foundation (PSG), Embedding the PSG into the school norms and practices, acting on or carrying out the program, and Determining Outcomes are the four steps that make up the new paradigm for conducting pre-baccalaureate maritime programs known as LEAD.

Abstract

Environmental turbulence manifested by uncertainties and complexities has been extensively studied recently, especially that the 21st century is marked by significant phenomena like the shift to Digitalization and the COVID-19 Pandemic. With the rapid growth of e-commerce in the Philippines, increasing interest in research about it is also observed, but only few studies focused on online sellers. Being part of the MSMEs, which comprises 99.17% of the industry, it is now high time to explore the lived experiences of online sellers during the COVID 19 Pandemic. An interpretative phenomenological analysis based on hermeneutics was used to make sense of the responses of six participants from the Greater Metro Manila Area, gathered from semi- structured interviews based on Moustakas’ data gathering and analysis methods. There were eleven themes collected, and from these themes the textural and structural description were synthesized through the universal structure. Reciprocity of exchange was mainly the reason in establishing their online businesses while personal challenges were mostly what have been experienced. On how they experienced the phenomenon, most responses manifested new strategies of resilience, and how they see the future of their business is focused more on their envisioned future.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to conduct an in-depth analysis of the potential of Forex Trading and investing in developing financial resiliency among the employees of an Engineering and Consultancy Firm in the Philippines. This is a qualitative single case study of 10 employees of the company that were interviewed regarding the potential of investing in forex trading as a means to attain financial resiliency. Qualitative data for this study were gathered through one-session, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, documents, journaling, and observations. Thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s method for analysing qualitative data was used in understanding the qualitative data. Results have shown that participants have identified several challenges that seem to slow them down in earning money for them to obtain their aspiration of becoming financially resilient. It was also shown that participants thought that venturing in new business, stock market and forex investments, and sideline jobs were the most frequent responses recorded that may serve as solutions to the challenges. It is important to note that most of the participants were affirmative upon being asked if they would try foreign exchange investments as a potential means of achieving financial resiliency. Among others, the most significant manner of addressing financial challenges lamented by the participants was having a well-conditioned mind so that a well-planned long-term goal will be established. It is recommended to explore more related literature that tackles financial education in the Philippines and note the statistical number of those who are financially literate as this could be a contributing factor why the participants of this study lack concrete saving plans. Moreover, further exploration on the trend of foreign exchange investment is also suggested including the use of digital platforms for information dissemination regarding finance.
