Abstract

Physical activities bring health benefits essential to an individual's overall well-being. Engagement in physical activities may vary across different ages, gender, and the capability of an individual to participate. Despite the many potential benefits, the uptake of the level of physical activities among individuals is quite low and risk may occur that depends on the environment they are in. To elucidate these benefits and factors of physical activity engagement of individuals, this study aimed to classify all the scope of the evidence that pertains to participation in physical activities. The literature research, conducted in 2022, employed the databases Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), PubMed, ScienceDirect, and the search engine Google Scholar. Twenty-nine studies mentioning the engagement of individuals in physical activities were tagged from 4 databases. Findings equivalent to the article and participants were summarized quantifiably, while information implying the engagement in physical activities was organized using thematic analysis. Results distinguished that level of engagement in physical activities may vary in age, gender, and capabilities. These also identified risks that may occur in too much participation in activities or not even participating. Most importantly, physical activities were beneficial to an individual's physiological, personal, and psychosocial aspects. Understanding the engagement and establishment of community-based activities with the characteristics of inclusivity that will increase the level of engagement and participation of every individual may be functional to increase the promotion of physical activities regardless of their age, gender, and capabilities to perform.

Abstract

This study examined the discourses in the State of the City Addresses (SOCAs) of the former Mayor Davao City Sara Duterte-Carpio. Specifically, the rhetorical expressions, semantic expressions, linguistic features, and classifications of ideologies in the political discourses were explored. Through a Critical Discourse Analysis, the researchers explored the use of language and the ideologies represented in such. Findings show that the SOCAs of former Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio contained a variety of rhetorical expressions and discourse patterns. The researchers also found significant results about semantic macrostructures, which vary from one speech to another. The ideology of positive Us was also represented through powerful statements that show the importance of former Mayor Sara's leadership, administration, projects, and all people involved in her success. The researchers conclude that the former Davao City Mayor used words powerfully to highlight essential accomplishments and to express the value of the critical actors that made these achievements possible.

Abstract

English language proficiency is one of the most pressing issues, particularly in the field of education. Speaking and writing are two of the most important macroskills to master, especially in today's increasingly connected world. The current study seeks to ascertain students' comprehension and mastery of English grammar and explores whether grammar explains the students' proficiency in speaking and writing in Grade 10 Junior High School. The respondents were chosen for the study using a simple random sampling design. Additionally, the researcher's questionnaire, with three qualified validators tested for validity and a pilot tested for reliability, produced a satisfactory Cronbach's alpha result and served as the basis for gathering the study's data. Findings show that students' competence in English grammar, writing, and speaking is satisfactory. The outcome demonstrates that mastery of English grammar accounts for developing an acceptable level of speaking and writing abilities. The study concluded that students' command of English grammar explains their writing and speaking abilities.

Abstract

Overcrowding and long waiting times remain perennial issues in many emergency departments globally, resulting in unsafe and inefficient care. To facilitate the treatment of patients that arrive in the Emergency Department a triage process is often implemented. Triage enables the Emergency Department staff to prioritize patient care so that patients requiring more immediate care are seen first. This study described the competence and critical thinking ability of triage nurses in a selected hospital in Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines. The quantitative descriptive correlational research design was used in this study. Data was gathered through a self-administered questionnaire that adopted Yoon Critical Thinking Disposition and Triage Decision Making Inventory by Cone (2000). Results showed that decision-making competency is significantly different among different age groups (F=40.93, p<0.0001). Respondents’ critical thinking ability based on objectivity, healthy scepticism, systematicity and intellectual fairness, intellectual curiosity, self-confidence and prudence was at moderate level, with composite means of 3.23, 3.43, 3.22, 3.37, 3.33, 3.28, and 3.27, respectively. Based on the results of the study, participants had a moderate level of critical thinking ability while doing triage. Also, over-all decision-making ability significantly increased with age and years of experience. Furthermore, objectivity, self-confidence, prudence and over-all critical thinking ability are significantly associated with age. Moreover, the triage nurses’ decision-making skills can be greatly influenced by their critical thinking ability.

Abstract

Sleep is an integral component of maintaining overall health and well-being. Inadequate sleep can result in detrimental effects, both on mental and physiological aspects. While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' sleep quality was extensively examined, there remains a dearth of literature investigating the prevalence of sleep quality after the shift to a post-pandemic lifestyle. This study utilized a descriptive design and gathered data from 202 randomly selected grades 11 and 12 STEM students. We found that 68.81% of them have poor sleep quality. Data also showed that female students obtained high PSQI scores and had a significantly higher prevalence of poor sleep quality than males. However, there was no significant difference in sleep quality between grade levels. In conclusion, sleep quality among STEM students in the post-pandemic setting is poor, implying the need for further assessment of influencing factors in students' sleep patterns, strategies, and management skills. Furthermore, students should be educated on the importance of sleep and the negative consequences of poor sleep quality on regular activities, mental & physical health, and general well-being.

Abstract

Golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata L.) is considered as a notorious pest in the rice fields along with different agricultural countries including the Philippines. This study was conducted to develop a fermented golden apple snail (FGAS) nutrient solution and investigate its effects on the growth of green loose-leaf Batavia lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under a Kratky hydroponic method. Green-loose leaf in grand rapid variety were used as the test plant to assess the effectiveness of the five treatments in the study: T1-SNAP solution, T2-FGAS, T3-double strength FGAS, T4-molasses, and T5-water. Due to its better suitability for trials carried out inside a screenhouse system, complete randomized design was used in the study. Moreover, the pH, electric conductivity (EC) and temperature of the treatments were measured as well as relative humidity and temperature within the screenhouse as indicators of its physicochemical characteristics. The developed FGAS has a 1:1:1 ratio composed of the meat of the P. canaliculata, food-grade molasses, and water. The result indicated that the lettuces which grew on T2-FGAS are comparable with the lettuces on the positive control. T1-SNAP solution in terms of plant height, number of leaves, length and width of the biggest leaf, fresh weight, and root length. However, lettuces on T2-FGAS displayed better leaf coloration, dry weight, and width of the biggest lettuce leaf than T1-SNAP. Additionally, L. sativa plants cultivated in T3-double strength FGAS produced results that were comparable to those obtained with negative treatments T4-molasses and T5-water. The study further revealed that the developed FGAS can probably be used as hydroponic nutrient solution by plant growers. The researchers recommend microbiological water analysis and lettuce contents analysis for further study.

Abstract

Reading is regarded as a vital skill in attaining proficiency and widening knowledge in different subjects. The research aimed to establish the relationship of reading comprehension to academic performance in Mathematics. The respondents were the freshmen students in specified Math in the Modern World course. This study employed descriptive quantitative design. A researcher-made instrument which underwent experts’ validation and reliability test was used in determining the comprehension level in reading of the respondents. The results specified that positive correlation of reading comprehension and academic performance exists. Based on the results, there exists a highly significant difference between the reading comprehension level of the participants and their academic performance in their math courses. Moreover, with the generated value of .298, it can be inferred that that there is a positive relationship between the variables. This means if one variable increases the other variable moderately increases.

Abstract

Introduction: This graduate tracer study aimed to improve the nursing program in a state college. Method: It used descriptive survey collect the nursing graduates' demographic, educational, and employment profiles, as well as their feedbacks. The study used 60% representative stratified and snowball samplings. Findings presented in frequency distribution tables. Feedbacks were grouped into themes. Results: The demographic profile showed varied age from 20 to 40 years old, who were largely female. The educational profile showed fluctuating nurse licensure examination percentage, and a large number who were not actively involved in continuing professional development. The employment profile showed a large number of graduates who were not employed in nursing related jobs and without permanent employment status. Conclusion: Thus, these findings corroborated the graduates' feedbacks that to produce quality graduates for the labor market, program offering improvement in terms of faculty, curriculum and instruction, library, and physical facilities is needed.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the Physical Fitness Levels of Learners during the Lockdown Period: Basis for the Development of a Home-Based Physical Fitness Plan: To achieve the purpose of the study, the descriptive research design was used. Seventy-six (76) eleventh graders Health Optimizing Physical Education Accountancy, Business Management learners of Senior High School in Magalang Stand Alone 2 in the School Year 2020-2021 served as respondents of the study. The result revealed that body mass index marked a case of overweight and underweight, the respondents’ health-related fitness show above normal, needs improvement cardiovascular endurance, fair and needs improvement muscular strength. However, some are fair and need improvement in hamstring flexibility, and needs improvement in left shoulder girdle flexibility. Furthermore, the skill-related fitness of the respondents shows poor, fair, and needs improvement agility. Furthermore, poor and needs improvement balance, fair and needs improvement coordination. However, needs improvement and developing performance speed. Lastly, needs improvement in the leg, while needs improvement in reaction time. It is suggested the development of effective preventive strategies for all unfit students who are at high risk of being underweight and overweight and the design of programs that will enhance the fitness of students’ health and skill-related fitness.

Abstract

This study determined the level of competency of the Elementary School Heads in the District of Sibonga, along with the aspects of interpersonal, leadership, and supervisory skills during the school year 2020-2021 a basis for the management training framework. The areas of concern included the perceived level of competency in terms of interpersonal, leadership, and supervisory skills; the significant difference in the perception of the respondent groups of the three variables; the participants’ perspectives towards the three variables; and the management training framework. The result of the study showed that the respondents showed the same level of competency. Most of them have maintained a competent level of perception. Based on the result, respondents showed the same level of perception as to the different variables presented and no significant difference between them. It can be concluded that the passion and enthusiasm of our teachers and school heads are still maintained and even doubled due to the sudden change in learning approach. It is recommended that there is a need to assess the leadership style and situational favorableness of our teachers and school heads. With that, the Management Training Framework is being proposed.
