Abstract

The study was conducted at San Guillermo National High School, San Marcelino, Zambales, Philippines. Its focus is on "DIGITAL STORYTELLING" IN TEACHING FILIPINO SUBJECT IN GRADE 7 STUDENTS. The study consisted of eighty-seven (87) participants who were divided into two groups or sections: the controlled group and experimental group. The researcher used an experimental design in the study because its purpose is to find out if “Digital Storytelling" influences the level of learning of students in the First Grading. The score obtained from the pretest and posttest were collected, tallied, and presented statistically using the mean, and MPs. The mean was used to find out the learning level of the controlled and experimental groups and to find out the significant differences of the mean scores in the pre-test and post-test of the two participating groups. In the pre-test and post-test conducted, it was recorded that the Controlled group Mean score is lower compared to Experimental group. Based on the collected results of the study, the following recommendations are made: a) DepEd is expected to allocate funds for trainings and workshops about Digital Storytelling so that Teachers have sufficient knowledge and boost the effectiveness of using this visual device; b) Teachers should prepare "Digital Storytelling" visual equipment for teaching literature in Filipino subject because it helps to cultivate students' performance; and c) This research needs to be continued so as to confirm the effectiveness of using 'Digital Storytelling' in teaching.

Abstract

Diversified development of educational strategies has been increasingly growing in the field of teacher education to address the challenges in residential-based learning brought by the virtual classroom setting. Necessarily, the application of game-based learning (GBL) is viewed to significantly contribute to complementing the students' learning deficiencies. Hence, this study was conducted to increase concept retention among pre-service physical educators (PSPEs) through a game-based assessment strategy called moneypoly game. This descriptive-qualitative collaborative action research study comprised 48 student-participants enrolled in the professional education course, “Curriculum and Assessment in Physical Education and Health Education for K to 12”, at a teacher education institution in Central Luzon, Philippines during the first semester of the academic year 2022-2023. Educational activities related to the moneypoly game were implemented multiple times during the face-to-face class sessions. Subsequently, open-ended reflective questionnaires were administered to obtain authentic and valid data to capture the increment of concept retention among the PSPEs. Adhering to Braun and Clarke’s Thematic Analysis technique, students’ responses were themed via qualitative analysis software powered by MAXQDA Analytics Pro 2022. Findings revealed three (3) emerging themes that helped learners retain long-term memory of the lessons' concepts. This includes (1) learners’ experiences in the moneypoly game that strengthen their concept retention, (2) contributing factors to students’ constant participation, and (3) significant recommendations to improve the game-based assessment strategy in the next cycle. These characteristics of the moneypoly game influenced the way that students learned and remembered information. This led to the perception that the intervention generated multiform driving forces for the learners' all-encompassing learning. The exploration and utilization of GBL could be applied to other areas of discipline to corroborate the findings made in this study.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the Academic Self-Handicapping and Self-Regulating Learning Strategies employed by Grade 8 students at Godofredo M. Tan Integrated School of Arts and Trades, with a focus on understanding their impact on student engagement and academic achievement in the subject Araling Panlipunan. The study utilized a descriptive-correlational design and employed a researcher-modified questionnaire as the primary data collection method. Mean Standard Deviations were used to assess students’ perceptions of academic self-handicapping and self-regulating learning strategies, while Pearson Correlation was used to determine the relationship between Academic Self-Handicapping, Self-Regulated Learning Strategies, and students’ engagement and performance in Araling Panlipunan and Mediation Analysis to see if there is effect on the students’ performance mediated by their engagement. The result revealed a significant but weak positive correlation between students’ engagement and their performance in Araling Panlipunan. Furthermore, the students’ engagement was found to fully mediate the impact of their perceived level of academic self-handicapping and self-regulated learning strategies on their performance in the subject. As a result, the hypothesis has been rejected. This study sheds light on the factors influencing student engagement and academic achievement in Araling Panlipunan, providing valuable insights into the learning strategies adopted by Grade 8 students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between the communicative behavior of teachers and the attitudes and performance of students in Science in Sta. Peregrina High School in Balatong B, Pulilan, Bulacan. In particular, the aim of this study was to find answers to the following questions: (1) What is the level Science teachers show in challenging, encouraging and praise, non-verbal support, understanding, and controlling behavior? (2) At what level is the attitude of the students towards science? (3) What is the performance level of students in science subject? (4) Are teachers’ communication and students’ attitudes toward science related to each other? and (5) Are teachers’ communication and students’ performance toward science related to each other? Descriptive quantifiable method of research was utilized in this study. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Science teachers received very acceptable ratings for challenging, encouraging and praise, non-verbal support, understanding, and controlling behaviour as observed by their students. (2) Students have very acceptable attitudes to Science. (3) Students acquired an acceptable assessment in their Science grade. (4) There was no substantial relationship between challenging, encouraging and praise, controlling behaviour of teachers and the attitude of the students; challenging, encouraging and praise, understanding, and controlling behaviour of teachers and the students’ academic performance. Yet, there was substantial relationship in non-verbal support and understanding behaviour of teachers and attitudes of students.

Abstract

The educational sector, like many other aspects of human life worldwide, has faced unparalleled challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the perspectives of conveniently selected secondary school teachers at a private school in the United Arab Emirates regarding the transition from in-person to online teaching, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of online learning. Employing a qualitative-descriptive design, the study generated findings that revealed that utilizing diverse teaching strategies and creating interactive online learning environments promoted student engagement. Moreover, teachers established a friendly and secure online classroom where students were encouraged to actively participate and share their thoughts on the subject matter. However, several challenges were identified, including technological difficulties, low student engagement, academic dishonesty, and feelings of isolation resulting from a lack of peer interaction, all of which significantly impacted the well-being of the participants. Despite these obstacles, teachers remained committed to their profession and maintained a passion for supporting their families. The study recommends encouraging teachers to continue integrating technology into the teaching and learning process, embracing innovative methodologies, and providing logistical and psychological support to effectively navigate the challenges posed by educational disruptions. Findings also provide a significant backdrop for the improvement of the implementation and effectiveness of digital education.

Abstract

Sustainable Development Goal 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote healthy and sustainable diets. Student-athletes deal with unique challenges due to the demands of physical and mental requirements of their sports, making proper nutrition and dietary habits crucial for their overall health and performance. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary habits among State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Athletes at a state university in Pampanga, Philippines, as a basis for the development of a contextualized Nutrition Education Plan (NEP). The study was grounded on a postpositivist philosophical worldview that employed a quantitative non-experimental approach, specifically a correlational design. A total of 177 student-athletes were assessed for their nutritional knowledge and dietary habits using survey questionnaires. It was determined that student-athletes’ level of nutritional knowledge was described as “knowledgeable” while their perceived dietary habits were described as “good”, but still, there is an area for continued improvement. Meanwhile, it was found that there was no significant difference between nutritional knowledge and dietary habits of student-athletes when grouped according to their demographic profile. On the other hand, there was a significant but weak positive relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary habits of student-athletes. The results of student-athletes’ nutritional knowledge and dietary habits paved the way for a contextualized NEP anchored on the student-athlete. The study recommends generalizing the NEP and considering the other athletes who also need nutrition and dietary habits improvement.

Abstract

This paper assessed the extent of the implementation of the Provincial Ordinance 2012-09 or the No Plastic Policy in the Municipality of Balagtas, Bulacan. Since plastic waste is one of the evident issues in the municipality, the study aimed to assess the extent and determine the challenges encountered in the implementation of the No Plastic Policy which was signed in order to address the issues related to plastic wastes. The extent of the implementation of the policy was gathered through survey questionnaires distributed to business sectors and households while semi-structured interviews were conducted among the key implementers to determine the challenges encountered. The findings of the study showed that the extent of the implementation of the No Plastic Policy was somewhat implemented and the challenges encountered include costly and limited alternatives; lack of clarity in the operational guidelines; non-compliance of the residents; and lack of strict implementation efforts. Thus, the findings of the study showed that there is a need to strengthen the existing ordinance in the Municipality of Balagtas, Bulacan.

Abstract

This phenomenological inquiry intended to unearth the lived experiences of the retired faculty members on post retirement career. Previous studies had linked retirement with leisure, relaxation and benefit. However, this current study viewed it as an avenue to pursue a career as evidenced by twenty-one (21) retired teachers from basic to tertiary education in both public and private institutions. The salient findings revealed that the preference to work after tenure was anchored from economic reasons, defying age, loss and fear of insignificance. As they were nearing the twilight, working for them meant making every tick count. Economic reason was also a factor as they found their pension too minimal an amount to purchase not only basic commodities but hospitalization and maintenance medicine as years went by. But seasoned as they were, they managed to jump over the hurdles by being optimistic and maintaining circle as support system like family and friends, above all, imploring the Divine Providence. To lighten the plight, it was suggested that institutions may implement policies like seminars and training that could provide a better retirement preparation and transition to probable retirees.

Abstract

The study aimed to discover the undocumented traditional games within the Municipality of Macabebe, Pampanga, the Philippines. The data findings are to be contextualized in the educational implications of the Physical Education curriculum. With the use of a qualitative research approach, particularly a focused ethnography, a total of 16 key informants with age ranges from 61 to 102 years old participated in the semi-structured interview. After the data process, there were 11 traditional games found, five in the coastal area classified as moderately vigorous intensity when playing while six games in the land were vigorous. Using the Braun and Clarke thematic analysis, three themes were explicated. The first theme encompasses the people in Macabebe’s way of life and how the participants provide basic needs to their families. The second theme describes the origin of undocumented conventional games. The third theme states the educational implications of the Physical Education curriculum among the students. Relatively, the study provides data that enumerates the undocumented traditional games in Macabebe to be integrated into the curriculum.

Abstract

In many cases, underweight students may be left behind due to poor nutrition, health issues, or lack of access to resources that would help them thrive and achieve their academic goals. This condition is often overlooked, but it can have serious health consequences. In this paper, the researchers used the free-listing method to ascertain the perceived motives and barriers to exercise among underweight Filipino university students. This quantitative-descriptive study comprised 300 underweight Filipino college students enrolled in ‘PATHFIT-2: Exercise-Based Fitness Activities' for first-year students during their Second Semester of the Academic Year 2022-2023 from the main campus of a state university in Pampanga, Philippines, who were classified as having BMIs below the normal weight. Furthermore, EMI-2 from Mullan et al. (1997) subscales were used to categorize responses in the free list for motives, whereas Myers and Roth's (1997) subscales were utilized to categorize barriers. The top five reported motives for underweight students were "positive health," "strength and endurance", "ill health avoidance", "appearance", and "weight management". While "competition", "nimbleness", "affiliation", and "health pressures" did not elicit a response. On the other hand, most respondents do not have enough time and are too lazy to exercise since it may interfere with their school-related tasks. The findings provided educational institutions with precise recommendations on how to establish exercise programs that are in line with what motivates students and examine any barriers that may prevent such physical activity engagement.
