Abstract

Critical reading encourages students to think more deeply and actively to understand a reading material. It is a manner of broadening one's mind and enhancing their thought process. The study analysed the critical reading skills of Grade 9 students and assessed the difficulties they encountered to shed light and provide valuable solutions in the successful development and improvement of the students critical reading skills. The study utilized a qualitative research design involving Grade 9 learners and English teachers who are employed in a public high school in the Philippines. Data were gathered through the use of semi-structured survey questionnaires, both for Grade 9 learners and teachers. In this study, the researcher used a purposive sampling technique to select the three Grade 9 students, and three English teachers who became part of the study. The findings revealed that students' perception of their reading ability is below average. The majority of the respondents have poor reading skills. In addition to these, students have limited vocabulary and often disassociate themselves to reading. The different strategies used in motivating students to read were presented. The majority of the teacher respondents stated that critical reading skills are part of higher-order thinking skills. Moreover, a shortage in teaching facilities and resources in the classroom are the major factors why students have poor reading ability. Findings revealed that the majority of the teacher respondents claimed that improving critical reading skills of the students can also enhance their reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

Physical activity has captured considerable interest from international academic scholars due to its fundamental role in maintaining optimal health. Thus, this study sought to examine the scholarly articles on school-based physical activity, employing a comprehensive bibliometric analysis extracted from the Scopus database spanning 2013 to 2023. A filtering protocol was utilized to guide the selection of articles, and analyses were facilitated solely by Python programming. This research yielded extensive insights encompassing document type, publication rates, citation rates, prevalent keywords, and geographic distribution. The results revealed the prominence of "Articles" as the primary document category. Notably, the year 2020 was observed as the highest publication count, with 2014 being the peak year for citation rates. However, both publication and citation patterns exhibited substantial fluctuations. These analyses collectively identify the United States as the largest contributor among the top ten countries, accompanied by substantial contributions from European nations. The analysis of the top 50 most-cited journal articles indicates a prevalence of articles authored by one to five individuals, with a peak in publications during 2014, followed by a gradual decline. Notably, the keyword "children" prominently emerges across the datasets, underscoring its frequent utilization in the context of school-based physical activity research.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the perceived credit risk associated with microfinance loans among micro-enterprise businesses. It had three primary objectives: first, to profile the respondents based on their demographics; second, to gauge their perceptions regarding the credit risk and of the microfinance loans. The research employed a descriptive-correlational research design and was conducted in Brgy. Poblacion, Iligan City, involving a random sample of seventy-five business owners who completed an adapted and modified survey questionnaire. The findings revealed that a majority of the business owners were elderly individuals aged 51 years and older, primarily running cafeteria businesses. Many of these business owners had availed of microfinance loans for their enterprises, and a significant portion had recently experienced this process. It is noteworthy that the majority of micro-borrowers have limited incomes and a lack of substantial credit history. Over time, the microfinance sector has adopted risk mitigation strategies like group lending models and accepting specific collateral types. Moreover, microfinance institutions have expanded their lending to microenterprises, assessing their creditworthiness based on cash flows. In conclusion, this study suggests that factors such as age, business type, prior loan utilization, and loan experience do not significantly influence individuals' perceptions of credit risk associated with microfinance loans. Thus, other unexplored factors may play a more prominent role in shaping how individuals perceive the credit risk in microloans.

Abstract

The research aimed to explore the potential of Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) systems in delivering financial education and influencing knowledge and behavior among beneficiaries residing in selected barangays within Iligan City. Cash transfer initiatives have gained significant traction in regions worldwide characterized by deep-seated poverty and inequality coupled with relatively unstable social protection systems. They are often hailed as a viable tool for bolstering social protection, endorsed by international organizations and aid agencies. Conditional cash transfers (CCTs) are being considered as a strategic approach to alleviating poverty while simultaneously making investments in human capital. Evaluations of CCT programs have demonstrated their potential in promoting greater utilization of healthcare and educational services. This study delves into the extent to which CCTs can enhance financial capability. One notable example is the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino (4Ps) program in the Philippines, a cash distribution initiative that channels resources into health and education with the aim of mitigating extreme poverty.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the environmental awareness, attitudes towards environmental protection, and environmental practices of Grade 10 students. The study used a mixed-method sequential design and involved 150 students from three National High Schools in Zambales. The results showed that Grade 10 students had a good level of awareness about environmental protection laws (M=8.42, SD=1.63) and environmental stewardship promotion (M=8.58, SD=1.42). They were supportive of community environment protection (M=3.33) and school environment protection (M=3.46). However, the students observed improper waste segregation in both the school and community, leading to an increased interest in promoting environmental protection activities. There was a moderate positive correlation between the students' level of awareness on environmental protection and stewardship promotion and their environmental practices. Similarly, there was a moderate positive correlation between their environmental attitude in the community and school and their environmental protection practices. The Grade 10 students who are aware of the importance of protecting the environment and promoting ecological stewardship tend to be more concerned about conserving energy and natural resources. They are also supportive of activities aimed at protecting their school and community environments, and are observant of environmental problems in these areas. The study found that students' awareness and attitudes towards environmental protection and ecological stewardship have a positive impact on their practices to conserve and protect the environment. The study recommends that schools and communities should involve students in environmental protection activities to encourage their support for conserving energy and natural resources.

Abstract

Secondary school graduates entering tertiary education must possess the skills and knowledge to adapt rapidly to the ever-changing landscape of a knowledge-based economy. This study assessed the cognitive and non-cognitive college readiness levels of the 127 pioneering senior high school graduates of the Philippine K-12 Program enrolled as first-year college students in a private Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Data gathered for this descriptive research were collected using two standardized tests (OLSAT and 16PF). Results revealed that many students had a below-average cognitive level and average non-cognitive skills implying that they were not ready for the tertiary level cognitively but were college-prepared non-cognitively. It was concluded that assessing students' college readiness levels proved imperative to ensure that standards of the chosen programs are met vis-à-vis students' skills. The researchers recommend that Higher Education Institutions strengthen and institutionalize readiness assessment that will serve as a basis for bridging and remediation program for identified cognitively unprepared college students.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to determine the level of commitment of external campus faculty members to the implementation of extension services. In particular, this study sought answers to the following questions: (1) What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of gender, employment status, years in service, years in doing extension, and number of extension involvement? (2) What is the level of engagement of faculty members in external campuses in conducting extension services? (3)What is the level of commitment of faculty members in external campuses in conducting extension services? (4) What action plan may be developed to improve the involvement of faculty members in external campuses in conducting extension services? This study used a descriptive study using a questionnaire to collect relevant data. The results show that (1) More female faculty members provide extensions compared to male faculty members. Full-time faculty must provide extension services as one of their primary responsibilities; irregular may collaborate with permanent faculty. Because tenured faculty are aware of their core responsibilities, they must commit hours of extension activities even when they are available for teaching responsibilities. Regular faculty continue to be committed to extension services. (2) Faculty members show great appreciation in providing extension services and considering the efforts of the partner community because they believe that they are their potential partners in community development. (3) Faculty members provide extension services not only for accreditation purposes, but also to promote sustainable development, especially in marginalized areas.
