Abstract

The Barangay San Pedro in San Simon, Pampanga, partially bounded by the Pampanga River, faces seasonal flooding due to river inundation and soil erosion. Bamboo, with its ecological and economic benefits, plays a crucial role in mitigating adverse weather effects. Studying bamboo and documenting residents’ valuation of this plant can inform intelligent responses to annual riverside community challenges. The mixed-methods research aims to create an action plan for implementing a bamboo planting program to address these issues. A field study shown that the Barangay San Pedro, situated along the Pampanga River, already boasts diverse bamboo species. Six bamboo species were mapped and identified: bayog, Buddha belly, kawayan dilaw, kawayan tinik, kawayan tsina, and Taiwan bamboo. A survey of 310 adults residing near the riverbank revealed that despite difficulties in identifying bamboo names, they were aware of its ecological significance, characteristics, and uses. On average, riverside residents expressed moderate interest in learning about bamboo cultivation and using it for livelihood. Interviews with 21 residents further highlighted their deep appreciation for bamboo. The barangay community leader even acknowledged previous bamboo initiatives but highlighted deficiencies in the existing broad action plan. The study’s proposed action plan rectifies these gaps and ensures effective implementation of the bamboo planting program. Riverside residents of the barangay recognize the value of bamboo but lack comprehensive knowledge about its diversity. The study recommends targeted information campaigns, prioritizing native bamboo like kawayan tinik, and integrating bamboo planting into the basic education curriculum and community greening efforts through multisectoral collaboration.

Abstract

Technological advancements have mainstreamed online advertisements in potentially meeting a wide array of viewers through the combination of texts and images. The integration leads to the emergence of the multimodal discourse analysis which constitutes broader semiotic resources in the construction of meaning. Working together, these resources contain elements that can represent a cultural identity. With that, this study explored how the presence of eroticism in the Philippine culture is reflected in the selected seven Viva Max online advertisements through a multimodal analysis of their linguistic elements and visual grammar. Using Halliday’s Systematic Functional Linguistics, the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions reveal that the participants, Filipino women, are highlighted as sex objects. They trade their chastity by alluring and initiating sexual intercourses in exchange of material possessions. Moreover, same sex relationships have been normalized in the Philippine society despite its deep catholic beliefs. Consistently, using Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) Visual Grammar, representational and interactive analyses show participants having seductive poses, revealing outfits, and fierce facial expressions to show dominance over the viewers. These deconstruct the power women have in sexual intercourses. Overall, the eroticism in the Philippine culture reflects how women have remained men’s weaknesses in gratifying their sexual desires.

Abstract

Despite being globally acknowledged as one of the more gender-equal societies, the Philippines faces persistent challenges in achieving gender parity, especially in political representation, which necessitates a deeper investigation into women's political participation at the local level. This study delves into the nuanced dynamics of local women politicians (LWPs), examining their political background, recruitment into politics, and perceived factors for electoral success. Utilizing a phenomenological research design, the study aims to articulate and comprehend the essence of LWPs' lived experiences. Grounded in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the methodological framework facilitates a nuanced understanding of individual and societal realms. Six LWPs from Bukidnon, Northern Mindanao, participated in the study to comprehensively explore commonalities and distinctions in their political experiences. The findings revealed five themes of LWPs' political background: apolitical origins, entry into politics during young adulthood, involvement in philanthropy, membership in political families, and substantial political experience. The political recruitment of LWPs is revealed through the support of the church and the influence of political families. Additionally, LWPs' perceived factors for winning in electoral politics encompass three key themes: membership in a political family, philanthropic endeavors, and the prevalence of money politics. The lived experiences of LWPs resonate with prior research on "kinship politics" in the Philippines, illustrating how political power is bequeathed, inherited, and cycled within prominent political clans. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on women's political participation by offering a comprehensive and nuanced exploration of the multifaceted factors influencing their engagement in local politics.
