Abstract

Reading is considered a crucial skill for English as a second language learners, as it involves the integration of information from a text with prior knowledge to comprehend meaning. However, students often encounter challenges in reading comprehension, displaying varying proficiency levels and difficulties in grasping the content and significance of the material. To address this, the researcher employed a quantitative quasi-experimental design in the study. The findings revealed significant posttest results for both the experimental and control groups, with p-values below the 0.05 threshold. Notably, the experimental group exhibited a more substantial increase in mean posttest scores compared to the control group. As a result, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was supported. Specifically, the experimental group achieved a mean score of 79.06 on the posttests, while the control group attained a mean score of 68.75. These outcomes indicate that the experimental group, which received instruction through the partner reading strategy, outperformed the control group, which utilized the individual reading strategy. Consequently, there exists a significant disparity in reading skills between students instructed using the partner reading strategy and those taught with the individual reading strategy.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to determine how using Kahoot affected students' reading comprehension proficiency in the second grade throughout the academic year 2022–2023 at Mas Proyek Univa. This study used an experimental research design as its methodology. This study was carried out at Mas Proyek Univa during the XIIth grade. There were three XII grade classes. In each class, there were 30 students. Therefore, there were 90 pupils in all. The sample was taken using a cluster random sampling and lottery technique. The experimental group, designated as XII ipa, and the control group, designated as XII ips, were chosen. 60 students were selected as the sample. A multiple-choice test was the tool utilised to obtain the data. The t-test was used to analyse the data. Following data analysis, it was discovered that tobserved exceeded ttable (13.24 2.00) with a degree of freedom of 58 and a significance level of 0.05. It meant that although ho was turned down, ha was accepted. For the academic year 2022–2023 at Mas Proyek Univa Medan, there is a strong impact of the Kahoot application on students' achievement in reading comprehension

Abstract

Reading is a cognitive process influenced by the reader's brain, emotions, and beliefs, wherein they interpret the written words. The interactive approach is an instructional technique that holds promise for enhancing students' reading skills. This approach is considered effective because it promotes collaborative work, structured procedures, and encourages active participation and responsibility through different roles and tasks. The research results indicate that the post-test scores of both the experimental and control groups were statistically significant at a level of ≤ 0.05. The mean score of the post tests in the experimental group showed a greater increase compared to the control group. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The post test scores reveal that the experimental group achieved a mean score of 88.57, while the control group attained a mean score of 81.56. This suggests that the experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of reading skills. Consequently, there is a significant difference in reading skills between students taught using the interactive approach and those taught using student worksheets.

Abstract

The absence of clear curriculum guidelines for ESP education in Indonesia, particularly at the university level, has prompted the need for a needs analysis from alumni, particularly in the field of accounting, as one of the important stakeholders in ESP curriculum design. Through a mixed approach with convergent design, data obtained from questionnaires and interviews involving 14 alumni, 5 instructors, and a head of the accounting department revealed that the alumni strongly require language proficiency and good language skills, with an equal percentage of 84.28%. This was followed by the desire for relevant vocabulary and suitable learning themes that align with their professional environments, with percentages of 78.57% and 77.16% respectively. In a nutshell, the alumni require specific language proficiency and skills in their respective fields, supported by adequate vocabulary and relevant learning themes as input in designing an ESP curriculum, especially in the field of accounting.
