Abstract

The students of MTS TI Koto Tuo still encounter problems in mastering English especially in reading comprehension of descriptive text. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design by using the pre-test and post-test control group design. The population of this research was the Eighth grade students at MTS TI Koto Tuo. The sample was VIII.1 which was treated as experimental class and taught by using CIRC strategy and VIII.2 was treated as control class and taught by using conventional strategy. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique based on some consideration. From the result and accounting the pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, it was found that the t-obtained (7,66) was higher than the t-table (1.6787) with degree of freedom (df) = 49 and (α) = 0,05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of CIRC strategy to the students reading comprehension on descriptive text. It is proved that using CIRC strategy as a reading strategy can help the students in improving their reading comprehensions especially descriptive text.

Abstract

A great trend toward the use of technology and its integration into the curriculum has acquired great importance. Video has beenused as one of the best resources for students to practice English.Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the problems during the learning process of using videos, and to find out whether videos can improve the learning outcomes of students in SMPN 1 Kebun Tebu. Classroom Action Research was used to be implemented for the 30 students of SMPN 1 Kebun Tebu. Observation, Pre- and Post-test was used to collect the data. The result refield that there are significance improvement of the students score after having video as the learning media and it showed several challenges faced by the teacher during the learning process. In this case, teachers should be able to choose a suitable video, use technical equipment, and present it in a more interesting and meaningful way.

Abstract

The new paradigm on the position of English in the world has shifted as now English was no longer the property of native speakers. This shifting paradigm challenge the traditional assumption of English teaching world on whether English teachers should incorporate local or target culture in their teaching materials. This is a qualitative research using critical literature review method. The topic being discussed in this article is how to incorporate local value in English language teaching materials. The issue is analysed from various perspectives, they are: world Englishes, English as International Language, culture and identity, materials development and how they shape the idea of how English teaching materials in Indonesia should be developed. In order to do that, the researchers implemented four criteria of a good ELT materials proposed by McDonough, Shaw, Masuhara, (2013). As the result of the research, we provide two suggestions. They are creating a team of book developers and providing alternatives ELT materials based on different learning styles, text genres, or even viewpoint towards an issue.

Abstract

Digital learning is one way to overcome learning during a pandemic. There are several platforms that teachers can use in carrying out learning such as WhatsApp, YouTube and Google Classroom. This mixed method research aims to find out how were the teachers’ implementation of digital learning and how were EFL learners’ perception on teaching activities through digital learning of English. This research was conduct at Senior High School YPI Tunas Bangsa of Palembang. There were several samples including principal, one English teachers and eighty students’. The data obtained from interview, questionnaire, and documentation. Analyzed by using data reduction, data display and conclusion. The results showed that the implementation of platform and the students’ perception of learning English through digital technology. This research is expected to be one of the solutions to improve the way teachers implement learning through student perceptions.

Abstract

This study explores the motivations and perspectives of 2 university students in Indonesia. In this research, author employed qualitative design with the research method "Interview Study". The author collects data using Semi-structured Interviews, meanwhile, the author uses Thematic Analysis by Braun and Clarke for data analysis. It was found that the use of Grammarly independently by the participants was motivated by feedback from the teacher, belief in learning, feedback preference and English proficiency. In addition, their abilities also shape their perspective on the features provided by Grammarly. Students’ AWE appropriation is influenced by their belief about learning, preference on feedback and language proficiency

Abstract

In Indonesia, English has become a lesson that must be learned and has many enthusiasts. However, can English lessons be used to integrate character education. This descriptive qualitative method research aims to find about character education that can be integrate in teaching English, teaching materials that can be used and how the teachers integrate character education in teaching English. This research was conducted at Junior High School 4 of Tungkal Jaya. Informants of this research were English teachers and students at grade eight. The data obtained from observation, interview and documentation and analyzed using a qualitative analysis process by using data reduction, display and conclusion. Findings of this research showed that: there are only eight characters education that can be integrated in teaching English, this eight characters education were integrated by using teaching material “One Direction song, History which tells about togetherness and friendship” and integrated by carry out teaching in accordance with the existing syllabus and lesson plans. This research provide information to English teachers about the integrating of character education in teaching activities.

Abstract

English is considered important to learn because of its influence. However in Indonesia, English is categorized as a foreign language. The differences between English and Bahasa Indonesia make error unavoidable. This research is conducted to know which type of errors that most of the students make in using simple present tense and the factors why the students find learning simple present tense difficult. In conducting this research, mixed method was used to collect data from 18 students in the fourth semester of Veteran University. The data was collected from the result of the test and questionnaire given which will be used to answer the research question related. The findings of this research are there are 63% errors of misformation which most of the students make in using simple present tense and the lack of awareness which takes a great role in making simple present tense is difficult to learn. Thus from the results, we can conclude that the students mostly made misformation error and need to be aware regarding the importance of English.

Abstract

The issue is analysed from various perspectives, they are: world Englishes, English as International Language, culture and identity, materials development and how they shape the idea of how English teaching materials in Indonesia should be developed. Conclusion and a few recommendations about the issue of local content in teaching materials in Indonesia are presented and discussed in the end of the paper.

Abstract

Duolingo application in mobile assisted language learning can help students flexibly to learn English listening skills by its game-based features. Meanwhile, listening skill as one of significant language aspects for oral communication purpose is highly required for professional need by vocational senior high school. Therefore, this research was intended to find out the progress of students’ English listening skill in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta using Duolingo and students’ perceptions toward the mobile application. This study used quantitative research with pre-experimental design and its data collection used pre-test, post-test, and close-end questionnaire. The findings show that scores of students’ pre-test and post-test presented significant improvement of students’ English listening skill. The average students’ pre-test score was 73.25 while the average students’ post-test score was 83.3. It was supported by students’ perception that 90% students gave positive perception to the usage of Duolingo mobile application in their English learning process.

Abstract

The research objective is to describe the process and results as an effort to improve storytelling ability by using YouTube video for x grade students of MA Al-Fajar Pekanbaru. The method that used for the research is a descriptive method in the form of classroom action research (CAR). Data analysis techniques used were comparative descriptive techniques and critical analytic techniques. The results showed that the use of by using YouTube video can improve the storytelling ability for x grade students of MA Al-Fajar Pekanbaru.
