Abstract

YouTube is a popular platform utilized by a diverse range of people for various purposes, such as documentary videos, the latest news, tutorials, and more. As a result, a wide variety of speech styles can be found on the platform, reflecting different levels of politeness. This analysis was conducted to explore politeness in language within the comments section of a specific video. The source for this research is the video titled "The Case of P Diddy" from the Entertainment News YouTube channel. The video has a duration of 7 minutes and 8 seconds and was published on September 27, 2024. The data was analysed using politeness maxims. This study references six politeness maxims according to Leech (1993: 206-219). Employing a qualitative descriptive research method, the results indicate that out of the 80 comments analysed, there were 25 instances of identified maxims: 4 maxims of wisdom, 5 maxims of generosity, 5 maxims of appreciation, 4 maxims of simplicity, 4 maxims of agreement, and 3 maxims of sympathy.

Abstract

Speaking is a crucial skill for effective communication, especially for learners using a non-native language. In this study, we investigate the types of oral corrective feedback (OCF) used by English teachers and students' perceptions of when this feedback should be given. The research employs a descriptive qualitative design, focusing on 2 English teachers and 35 students from seven majors at SMK Bhakti Mulia Pare, Kediri, specifically in the English Morning Program (EMO). Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The questionnaire, comprising 15 items, used a Likert Scale to gauge students' feelings about OCF, their perceptions of it, and how they believe it should be delivered. The study finds that Teacher A predominantly used recasts, while Teacher B utilized both recasts and repetition. Recasts involve incorporating the content of the incorrect utterance into a corrected version. Additionally, the questionnaire results indicate that over 68.1% of students agreed with the feedback provided by their teachers. The findings suggest that oral corrective feedback is beneficial and can enhance students' speaking competence.

Abstract

Toxic masculinity is a manifestation of excessive masculine dominance, including violence, aggression, and suppression of emotions. This study analyses how toxic masculinity is reflected in two of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, The Black Cat (1845) and The Tell-Tale Heart (1843). Using a qualitative approach and R. W. Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity, this study reveals that toxic masculinity in both stories is seen through aggressive domination, violence against weak groups, and the failure of the main characters to manage their emotions. In The Black Cat, toxic masculinity manifests through violence against animals and his wife, fuelled by alcoholism. Meanwhile, in The Tell-Tale Heart, the physical domination of an old man reflects the need to assert power. This research demonstrates the relevance of this phenomenon to the challenges of modern society and recommends interdisciplinary analyses to deepen the understanding of the impact of toxic masculinity on social relationships.

Abstract

This research used a semiotic approach to analyze Nias' traditional houses, exploring the symbolism and meaning contained in the architecture and design elements. The traditional Nias house functions not only as a place to live but also as a representation of the cultural values, belief systems, and social identities of the Nias people. The research method included analysis of the signs and symbols on the house structure. The research results showed that every element of a Nias traditional house, from the basic structure to the decorative ornaments, has a deep symbolic meaning and reflects the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and spirituality. These findings reinforce the importance of preserving Nias' traditional houses as part of Indonesia's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Abstract

Game-based ice-breaking activities are essential for increasing student engagement and motivation during English lessons. Previous studies have highlighted their effectiveness in creating a learning environment that focuses on student experiences. This study aims to fill the gap by exploring the types of game-based icebreaker activities used by English teachers and their impact on them. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, collecting data from three elementary school teachers in Malang, East Java, through observation and interviews. The study found that both non-digital and digital games were used as ice-breaking activities to foster a more interactive learning environment. These activities strengthened teacher-student relationships and encouraged creativity in teaching methods. However, challenges such as time constraints, limited resources, and managing student behavior were observed. These findings indicate the importance of integrating games into teaching strategies to enhance the relationships between teachers and students, thereby improving the classroom atmosphere and promoting creativity in teaching methods. They also highlight the need for teacher training programs to address challenges such as time constraints, limited resources, and managing student behavior when implementing games.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of the trance method as an innovative approach to exploring and developing the dance talents of 4th and 5th-grade students at SD 2 Baubau. The trance method involves guiding learners into a transformative state that enhances their creativity and expression. In this state, learners experience a deeper connection with their bodies and emotions, enabling them to explore dance movements and expressions authentically and personally. The method also aims to improve learners' focus and concentration, allowing them to quickly grasp dance movements, refine techniques, and enhance their skills more effectively. The research process includes six stages: (1) observing students in grades 4 and 5, (2) analyzing their dance talents, (3) classifying students based on their abilities, (4) implementing the trance method, (5) fostering movement creativity, and (6) documenting the findings. The results of this study are intended to serve as a reference for teachers in organizing extracurricular activities, providing practical strategies to unlock students’ creativity and nurture their dance talents. This research highlights the potential of the trance method as an effective tool for developing students’ interests and skills in dance, contributing to more engaging and personalized learning experiences.

Abstract

This research explores the incorporation of technology in instructing English to learners in the Islamic Education Department at Indonesian Islamic Universities. With the rise of globalization emphasizing the significance of English skills, it is crucial for these universities to implement creative teaching strategies that improve language acquisition. By conducting qualitative research that includes interviews and surveys with teachers and students, the study uncovers a range of technological resources—like language learning apps, digital platforms, and multimedia materials—that promote engaging and interactive learning settings. Results indicate that technology enhances engagement and accommodates various learning styles. Nonetheless, obstacles like insufficient technological infrastructure and differing degrees of digital literacy among educators and learners remain. This paper emphasizes the importance of professional growth and culturally appropriate content to successfully leverage technology's capabilities in enhancing English language learning within Islamic education settings. The findings highlight the pivotal impact of technology in enhancing the educational journey and equipping students for global interaction within an Islamic context.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the effect of implementing game-based learning on increasing student motivation in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). By analyzing eleven relevant articles published between 2017 and 2024, this review identifies the effects of implementing game-based learning. Game-based Learning as an effective strategy for increasing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' motivation and learning outcomes. The findings show that Game-based Learning significantly increases student motivation, besides that game-based learning can also improve student vocabulary and academic results. Game-based learning has also been shown to reduce anxiety and support collaborative learning, strengthen relationships between students and teachers, and increase student engagement in learning. Further recommendations for future research in the application of game-based learning should focus on optimizing Game-based Learning for various learning contexts, effective types of games, duration of use, and integration with traditional methods, as well as developing training programs for teachers.

Abstract

Teachers’ beliefs play a fundamental role in building the foundation for the teachers’ classroom practices. Beliefs determine what they say and do. The present study investigates teachers’ beliefs related to infusing moral values in their teaching practices. The data were collected through interview with six foreign language teachers (three Arabic teachers and three English teachers) who participated in the study. Finding indicated that the teachers hold a variety of beliefs about; a) the moral values, b) the ways they used to nurture moral values, and c) the factors that influence the instillation of moral values. The findings suggest that future researchers could deploy methods such as observation, document analysis, and other methods to provide a more comprehensive understanding and depiction of how moral values are viewed and integrated by foreign languages teachers.
