Abstract

Fillers, such as “uh” and “uhm,” played a crucial role in spontaneous spoken communication. Despite their importance, research on fillers in debate competitions remained limited, with most studies focusing on classroom contexts. This study addressed this gap by examining the types and functions of fillers used in National School Debating Championships (NSDC) 2023 and 2024, highlighting their pedagogical implications. Using a descriptive qualitative case study approach, it analyzed utterances with fillers from debate finals. The findings revealed that lexicalized fillers, such as repetitive phrases, were used more frequently than unlexicalized fillers. Additionally, fillers served five functions: hesitation, mitigation, time-creating, empathizing, and editing-term devices. These insights underscored the importance of incorporating fillers into English teaching and learning to enhance fluency and confidence. By understanding how to use fillers strategically, students could improve their speaking skills, particularly in high-pressure environments like debates.

Language is the most important means of communication in life, whether in the form of writing, orally, or only in the form of certain signs. Without language, humans cannot socialize with other people and slang is a phenomenon of the use of linguistic variations that are formed as a result of language development and social dynamics in society. Slang is a new vocabulary owned by a certain group of people that is related to informal conversations and used in informal situations. This research aims to find out the types and meanings of slang contained in Raditya Dika's podcast. The data source for this research was taken from Raditya Dika's podcast which was uploaded to his Spotify account with the title "Guide to Facing Haters ft Uus". This research uses a qualitative descriptive method and data is collected by transcribing conversations from Raditya Dika and Uus. 23 pieces of data were found in Raditya Dika's podcast related to slang language. The research results show that the Podcast "Guide to Facing Haters ft Uus" by Raditya Dika contains 5 types of slang according to the theory of Allan and Burridge (2006), namely Fresh and Creative, Flippant, Imitative, Acronym, and Clipping. From the research results, it was found that the Fresh and Creative types were most widely used with 10 data, 8 data for Acronyms, 3 data for Imitative, 1 data for Flippant, and 1 data for Clipping.

Abstract

This study focused on reviewing and analyzing the types of speech errors, comparing the frequency of such errors, and examining the reasons behind speech errors, as made by former President of the United States Donald Trump (DT) and Vice President Kamala Harris (KH) in the 2024 presidential election debate. Theory of speech error by Clark and Clark (1977) is used as the main guidance in the analysis. The debate, entitled "Harris vs Trump in the ABC News 2024 Presidential Debate", lasted 90 minutes. This study used a qualitative approach, this study analyzed the video of DT and KH, examining words, phrases, and sentences by transcribing their speeches. The results showed that DT committed more speech errors in total but less in types, while KH committed more types of speech errors and less errors in total. The causes of these speech errors were due to social factors, including anxiety and social pressure during the debate. Based on the amount of speech errors, KH sounds more promising than DT and has bigger possibilities to attract votes in the upcoming election.

Abstract

This research seeks to identify perspectives and challenges in using online learning applications. The sample for this research was 3 EFL teachers at SMP Santa Maria Banjarmasin. This research uses a qualitative approach to obtain data. The instrument used in this research consisted of 8 open-ended questionnaires created online using Google Forms. The data is then collected, analyzed, and described. This research found that, SMP Santa Maria Banjarmasin teachers used online learning applications such as Zoom, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Canva. The challenges come from a need for more skills in using Zoom's features, time constraints, and a need for features on the free account. Teachers believe that online learning can be implemented with thorough preparation because it is beneficial for education in the future. Therefore, the researcher suggests that further research use a more detailed methodology in collecting samples and analyzing data to further serve for in-depth findings about online learning applications.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and analyze science literacy assessment instruments for grade VIII junior high school students using Rasch modeling. The development and analysis of the instrument was carried out with an approach that includes content, substantive, structural, and consequential aspects. The science literacy assessment instrument was developed based on eight science learning materials for grade VIII semester 1, designed to represent science literacy competencies according to PISA standards, namely: explaining phenomena scientifically, interpreting data and evidence scientifically, and evaluating and designing scientific enquiry. The questions are presented in the form of multiple choice with a total of 48 itemsThis study used the Research and Development (RD) method with Tessmer's Formative Research design. The research approach applied is mixed methods, which combines qualitative and quantitative approaches. Research data were obtained from 158 students at SMPN 7 Brebes. The results of data analysis using the Rasch model with the R version 4.4.2 program and the eRm package showed that 85% of the items were valid with a p value 0.01. Based on validation covering content, psychometric, and construct aspects (consisting of content, substantive, structural, and external), this instrument meets the requirements as a good quality item
