Abstract

Early adolescents are experiencing various changes in themselves and must adapt to them. In this process, many problems can lead to deviant behavior, one of which is self-harm behavior. Self-harming behaviors can cause harm to oneself and can even lead to suicide. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parenting styles and self-harm behavior in early adolescents in the agricultural area of Jember Regency. This study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified random sampling with 376 respondents. The instruments used were the Parenting Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) and the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI)—data analysis using the contingency coefficient correlation test. The results showed that the most common parenting style was authoritative parenting, with as many as 242 respondents (64.4%), and the most common self-harm behavior was low self-harm, with as many as 319 respondents (84.8%). The correlation test results show that the ρ value is 0.000, which means a significant relationship exists between parenting styles and self-harm behavior in the agricultural area of Jember Regency. Parenting provided by parents ideally or means not restraining too hard and facilitating adolescents to express their opinions can trigger early adolescents' coping mechanisms to be more adaptive by behaving, not deviating, or not committing self-harm behavior. This study can be used as a guideline for schools, mental health nurses, and communities to develop appropriate interventions to address the problem of self-harm and parenting in early adolescents.

Abstract

Sibling rivalry is a competitive feeling that occurs between siblings. Children will show their sibling rivalry by behaving temperamentally, such as crying loudly for no reason, extreme behavior to bind their parents' attention, or even behaving violently and even committing violence against their younger siblings. This jealousy does not always arise in the first child who will have a younger sibling, where some research results mention that second and third children can also feel jealous of their younger siblings. Factors associated with the incidence of sibling rivalry are the level of knowledge, parental attitudes, age gap and gender of the child. Factors associated with the incidence of sibling rivalry are the level of knowledge, parental attitudes, age distance and gender of the child. Abstract

Sex is a close physical act between two individuals which includes genital contact. It usually refers to the characteristics and traits of biological sex. In Nigeria, a number of studies have shown that sexual activity among youth is not only high but on the rise. It is based on this premise that the researcher investigates the knowledge and attitude towards premarital sex among senior secondary school students in Ikorodu central, Lagos state. Descriptive research design of correlation type was adopted for the study. (240) public senior secondary school students in Ikorodu Central Local Government Area of Lagos State were selected through a multistage sampling technique. A self-developed questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency count, percentage, mean and standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics of independent sample t-test at significance level of 0.05. The findings of the study have shown that there is a high level of knowledge of premarital sex among the respondents and most of the respondents have negative attitude towards pre-marital sex. The results indicate that there is no significant gender disparity in attitude towards premarital sex among secondary school students in Ikorodu. The study therefore recommended the need for comprehensive sex education programs tailored to address misconceptions and negative attitudes towards premarital sex among adolescents, thus promoting healthier decision-making and behaviours in this crucial demographic group.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has made hospital screening more stringent. All patients undergo an antigen swab examination, and this examination can cause anxiety for the patient and family. This study aims to identify family support for the anxiety of patients undergoing Rapid Tests while in hospital. The independent variable in this study is family support, while the dependent variable is the anxiety of patients undergoing rapid COVID-19 screening tests. This study had 154 respondents using an accidental sampling technique. This research design uses a correlation type with a cross-sectional approach. Bivariate statistical tests use Kendall's Tau. The results of this study were that respondents had good family support of 71.4%, the anxiety of patients undergoing the COVID-19 rapid test screening was mild anxiety of 50.6%, and there was a relationship between family support and the anxiety of patients undergoing the COVID-19 rapid test screening in Hospital with p-value = 0.000 (p<0.05). Family support has a positive impact in reducing patient anxiety when undergoing a rapid COVID-19 screening test. Therefore, interventions involving the family in the patient care process can be considered a strategy to improve the patient's psychological well-being. Further studies are recommended to explore specific mechanisms by which family support may influence patient anxiety in other medical contexts. Keywords: Covid-19, Family Support, Anxiety, Rapid Test

Abstract

Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV may occur during pregnancy, labor, and after childbirth, with 10–15% of the highest risks during breastfeeding. This problem is significant in the Sub-Saharan African countries, of which Nigeria is inclusive, where more than 80% of children living with HIV are found, with over 10,000 new pediatric HIV infections per year and a 26.9% MTCT transmission rate in 2017. Thus, this study assesses the knowledge, attitude, and practice towards PMTCT of HIV. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was employed for the study, a multistage sampling method with a proportional allocation of samples to each Primary Health Care Center, and systematic simple random sampling were used to select 175 study participants. The Instrument for data collection was a self-administered questionnaire developed by the researchers based on the study objectives guided by previous studies, the instrument was pilot-tested and had a reliability Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.738. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, descriptive statistics were used to describe the frequency distribution and are presented using frequency tables and percentages. The study finding shows that the respondent’s level of knowledge is high (62.6%), the attitude was positive (3.1), and practice was good (70.2%) towards the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV respectively. In this study, the respondents' level of knowledge was good, their attitude was positive, and their practice was good for PMTCT of HIV. This finding also reveals that healthcare providers are doing a good job in providing counseling sessions and knowledge of PMTCT to pregnant women attending antenatal care. Though, much is needed to increase their acceptance and use of PMTCT for HIV services.
