Abstract

Science process skills (SPS) are essential competencies that students must possess during laboratory activities to support conceptual understanding and the development of scientific thinking abilities. This study aims to assess the level of students' mastery of SPS and evaluate the effectiveness of chemistry practicum activities in enhancing these skills. The research employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive-evaluative design. The subjects are second-semester students participating in a basic chemistry practicum. The SPS assessment instrument, consisting of 18 items, was developed and validated, yielding an average Aiken’s V index of 0.84, indicating high validity. The results show that most students demonstrated strong skills in observation (76%) and classification (68%), but showed weaknesses in higher-order skills such as formulating hypotheses (35%), designing experiments (30%), and understanding experimental variables (25%). Skills in data interpretation (45%) and oral scientific communication (40%) also require improvement. These findings highlight the need to strengthen inquiry-based learning and consistently apply process-oriented assessment in chemistry practicum activities to comprehensively develop students’ science process skills.

Abstract

Abstract

Insect pests that attack horticultural agriculture in West Sumatra have resulted in reduced yields.  Accurate and detailed identification and inventory of pest species will facilitate appropriate control measures. This study aims to inventory the types of insect pests on horticultural crops in four areas of horticultural centers in West Sumatra. This study used a survey method to collect data through observations made randomly on several types of plants including cabbage, shallots, guava, eggplant and corn.Instruments used include 70% alcohol, label paper, tweezers, collection bottles and a mobile camera for documentation. From the results of the study, it is known that several types of insect pests in horticultural crops in several plantations in West Sumatra include cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera),armyworm (Spodoptera litura), earthworm (Agrotis sp. ), mealybug (Paracoccus marginatus), fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis), Melamphaus rubrocinctus, ladybird (Epilachna sp.), leafhopper (Empoasca sp. ), whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), koksi beetle (Coccinella septempunctata), brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), leaf beetle (Chaetocnema basalis) and turtle beetle (Aspidimorpha miliaris). The identification of pests on horticultural crops in West Sumatra shows variations in the types of pests that attack plants in each location. Pest control strategies need to be adapted to the type of plant and local environmental conditions.

Abstract

Newton's laws are fundamental concepts in mechanics and serve as the foundation for various other topics in physics. However, mastering these concepts remains a challenge for university students. This study aims to analyze the difficulties experienced by students in understanding Newton's laws. The research method employed is descriptive quantitative, involving 35 first-year physics education students. The instrument used was the Force Concept Inventory (FCI), consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions with five answer options each. Data analysis was conducted by identifying items where students' posttest answer percentages were below 50%. Crosstabulation was used to observe shifts in students' answers from the pretest to the posttest, followed by descriptive analysis. The study revealed several difficulties encountered by students regarding Newton's laws, including challenges in understanding the concept of resultant velocity of moving objects, the distinction between velocity and acceleration (Newton’s Second Law), and Newton’s Third Law. These findings are based on the analysis of FCI items number 8, 13, and 26.

Abstract

Natural Science concepts, such as Structure and Function of cell, are often difficult for students to understand because of their microscopic characteristics and are not visible directly. This study aims to analyze the conceptual understanding of students before and after using Virtual Reality-based learning media and evaluate the effectiveness of the media in improving knowledge of Structure and Function of cell. The research was conducted at SMP 07 Ma'arif Perintis with the subject of class VIII students. The method used is qualitative research with exploratory study design. The results showed that after the use of virtual reality video, students had an increase in understanding of concepts. Interactive visualization presented through Virtual Reality technology helps students more easily uncover abstract concepts with concrete visual representations, thus supporting a deeper understanding of the structure and function of cell. Virtual reality-based learning media provides a more interesting learning experience and allows students to visualize the structure and function of cells clearly, thus helping to clarify concepts that are difficult to understand.

Abstract

Argumentation skills related to critical thinking skills that are important for 21st century students. This study aims to identify differences argumentation skills based on gender of senior high school students in Tangerang Regency. This research method is quantitative descriptive utilizing a sample of 110 high school students consisting of 44 male students and 66 female students. The sample was utilized purposive sampling technique. The research instrument consisted of 8 essay items on the topic Works and Energy with a reliability coefficient α=0,778. The argumentation components that were measured are claims, warrant, backing, and rebuttal. The results of this study showed that 19% answers of students were only claims, 81% answers of students were warrant and backing, and 11% answers of students were rebuttal. The results of the Mann Whitney test were no differences the argumentation skill among male and female students. However, male students have a slightly higher skill to make either weak rebuttal or identifiable rebuttal.
