Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a pulmonary infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and can lead to respiratory problems such as coughing, shortness of breath, and ineffective airway clearance. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mint leaf aromatherapy as an alternative therapy to improve airway clearance in patients with pulmonary TB in the Mawar Ward of X. A descriptive method with a nursing care approach was applied to two patients selected through purposive sampling. Mint leaf aromatherapy was administered three times daily for 15 minutes over three consecutive days. Observed parameters included respiratory rate and pattern, the presence of adventitious breath sounds, and the patient’s ability to expectorate sputum before and after the intervention. The results showed significant improvements, including normalization of respiratory rate, more regular breathing patterns, disappearance of adventitious breath sounds, and improved sputum expectoration. In conclusion, mint leaf aromatherapy has potential as an effective complementary therapy, although further studies are needed to strengthen these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

Access to healthcare services is an important determinant in improving the quality of healthcare services, particularly in rural areas that still face geographical and digital limitations. Inequality in access has the potential to hinder the realization of an equitable and sustainable healthcare system. This study aims to analyze the relationship between access to healthcare services and the quality of healthcare services. The research employed a descriptive analytic correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 150 community respondents in rural areas of Southeast Aceh Regency selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire measuring dimensions of access (availability, affordability, acceptability, and digital access) as well as the quality of healthcare services. Data analysis was conducted bivariately using statistical tests appropriate to the level of data measurement. The results showed that most respondents perceived access to healthcare services as still inadequate, particularly in terms of geographical affordability and digital access. The quality of healthcare services was categorized as fairly good, although weaknesses remained in infrastructure and facilities. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between access to healthcare services and the quality of healthcare services (ρ-value < 0.05). Therefore, it is expected that efforts will be made to improve access to healthcare services through strengthening infrastructure, equitable distribution of healthcare personnel, and optimization of digital-based services to support the realization of a fair and sustainable healthcare system.

Abstract

Preoperative anxiety is a common psychological response among patients undergoing major surgery and may negatively affect physiological stability and surgical outcomes. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of emotional support and deep breathing relaxation in reducing preoperative anxiety among major laparotomy patients at RSUD X. A quantitative quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted involving 10 patients selected through total sampling. Anxiety levels were measured using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). The intervention, consisting of emotional support and deep breathing relaxation, was administered for 10–15 minutes before surgery. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample t- test. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in anxiety levels following the intervention (p = 0.02). These findings indicate that emotional support and deep breathing relaxation are effective non-pharmacological nursing interventions for reducing preoperative anxiety and may improve patients’ psychological readiness before major surgery.

Abstract

Pulmonary Tuberculosis remains a significant health problem and is often associated with respiratory complications such as ineffective breathing patterns. This case study aimed to describe the effectiveness of non-pharmacological nursing interventions, namely the Semi- Fowler position and Pursed-Lip Breathing exercises, in improving breathing patterns in patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis. A descriptive case study design was applied to three patients treated in the Mawar Ward of RSUD X. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and documentation over a three- day intervention period. Outcomes were evaluated based on respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, use of accessory respiratory muscles, chest wall retraction, and subjective dyspnea. The results showed a decrease in respiratory rate from 26–28 to 20–21 breaths per minute and an increase in oxygen saturation from 94–95% to 99%, accompanied by reduced dyspnea and improved breathing patterns. These findings indicate that the Semi-Fowler position combined with Pursed-Lip Breathing is effective in improving respiratory function in patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the higher risk of postpartum depression in mothers undergoing cesarean section (CS) compared to vaginal delivery. Physical trauma, prolonged recovery, and feelings of failure are key factors. Data shows that postpartum depression affects 46.7% of post-CS mothers, much higher than 2.2% in vaginal deliveries. This research aims to analyze postpartum depression risk among post-CS mothers at Bali Mandara Hospital by examining factors such as age, education, pregnancy status, marital status, parity, economic status, and spousal support. A descriptive quantitative method was employed, with a sample of 43 post-CS mothers collected from March to April 2025. Data were collected using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and analyzed univariately. The results showed most respondents were over 35 years old (44.1%), highly educated (58.1%), and had strong spousal support (79%). The majority (74.4%) exhibited low depression risk, while 14% had moderate risk. Planned pregnancy, marital status, multiparity, income above minimum wage, and strong spousal support reduced depression risk. In conclusion, postpartum depression risk among post-CS mothers at Bali Mandara Hospital is low due to adequate protective factors. Healthcare providers should conduct routine screening, provide psychosocial interventions for high-risk mothers, and enhance family education on postnatal support.

Abstract

Aromatherapy is a method of treatment using scents derived from essential oils. Lemongrass oil can be used in aromatherapy because it has calming properties. Peppermint oil contains the main compound menthol, which is useful as a diuretic, antispasmodic, antiinfective, analgesic, and anxiety reliever. This study aims to formulate and evaluate a roll on aromatherapy combination of lemongrass oil and peppermint oil. The combination of lemongrass oil and peppermint oil was formulated in the form of a roll-on aromatherapy preparation, then evaluated for its physical properties, including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, and hedonic tests. The results show that the combination of lemongrass oil and peppermint oil can be formulated into an aromatherapy roll on preparation with homogeneous physical properties, a clear yellowish color, a lemongrass aroma, a liquid consistency, and a warm and cool taste or sensation, as well as a pH of 6. In the hedonic test, the preparation received good and acceptable scores from respondents for color, consistency, and taste or sensation. Therefore, it can be concluded that lemongrass oil and peppermint oil can be formulated into an aromatherapy roll on preparation and meet the evaluation standards for aromatherapy roll on preparations.

Abstract

Hypertension in the elderly is a serious health issue that can lead to fatal complications if not managed through proper self-care. This descriptive quantitative study aims to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of elderly hypertensive patients at UPT Puskesmas Medan Johor. Data were collected using questionnaires from 64 respondents selected via accidental sampling. Inclusion criteria included elderly aged ≥ 60 years with blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg. The majority of respondents were female (58%) and in the 60–74 age group (78%). The results showed that the respondents' knowledge level was in the good category (61%), attitudes in the good category (50%), and practices in the good category (70%). However, barriers were still identified in the male elderly group, who sought health check-ups less frequently than females. The high percentage of good behavior is influenced by the respondents' education level, which is mostly secondary (high school). Adequate knowledge forms positive perceptions (attitudes), which in turn triggers routine self-care practices. In conclusion, the elderly at UPT Puskesmas Medan Johor exhibit high self-awareness, but specific interventions are needed to increase male elderly participation in hypertension management.
