Abstract

The film Extraction (2020) is considered to negatively represent Bangladesh and stereotype Muslims, reinforcing Islamophobia through characterization, setting, and religious symbols, thereby influencing public perception. This study aims to analyze how Muslim audiences receive, interpret, and respond to the construction of Islamophobia in the film Extraction. A qualitative approach was employed, using audience reception analysis and Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding theory, with data collected through interviews with Muslim informants who watched the film. The results reveal diverse receptions among Muslim audiences. A dominant-hegemonic position emerges among viewers who accept the film’s representation as a social critique or a criminal reality. The negotiated position is found in audiences who enjoy the film’s action but reject the generalization of Muslim stereotypes. The oppositional position is strongest among audiences with high religious knowledge and cultural context, who reject the narrative stigmatizing Muslims and associating them with terrorism. Audience interpretation processes are influenced by cultural background, personal experience, and religious knowledge, making acceptance of Islamophobia in the film selective and active. Muslim audiences actively interpret the film, resist negative stereotypes, and respond based on cultural, religious, and personal contexts. This study enriches the literature on audience reception and Islamophobia studies, and encourages the media to be more inclusive and critical of Muslim stereotypes.

Abstract

Pesta Tapai tradition embodies Islamic values and cultural symbols whose meanings remain underexplored through a Symbolic Interactionist perspective. Research objective to analyze Islamic value internalization and symbolic meanings within Pesta Tapai through Symbolic Interactionism and da'wah communication. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of Malay community members in Batu Bara who actively participated in the Pesta Tapai tradition. The findings indicate that Pesta Tapai serves as an effective medium for cultural da'wah to internalize Islamic values, including ukhuwah Islamiyah, togetherness, cooperation, and social solidarity. These values are manifested through collective activities in preparing and sharing tapai and lemang before Ramadan. The tradition also contains rich symbolic meanings reflected in tapai, lemang, communal gatherings, and the mogang ritual. Tapai is interpreted as a symbol of patience, self-control, and spiritual readiness for Ramadan. From a Symbolic Interactionist perspective, community members collectively interpret cultural symbols, internalize them into religious identities, and transmit Islamic values across generations through sustained social interactions. Conclusion: Pesta Tapai serves as both a cultural tradition and a da'wah medium, strengthening the internalization of Islamic values through symbolism. Significance: The study enriches Islamic communication, cultural anthropology, and Symbolic Interactionism scholarship regarding local religious value transmission.

Abstract

This study arises from the observation that digital da’wah communication remains predominantly oriented toward information dissemination and has not been fully effective in fostering spirituality, encouraging self-transformation, and strengthening audiences' faith in the digital era. This study aims to analyze the internalization of Tazkiyatun Nafs, the communication strategies implemented, and the spiritual impacts of a virtual da’wah program on the behavioral changes of active participants. The study employed a qualitative approach using a single case study method involving six informants, speakers, and hosts through in-depth interviews, participant observation, documentation, and data analysis following the Miles and Huberman model with source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that the virtual da’wah program based on Tazkiyatun Nafs functions not only as a medium for disseminating knowledge but also as a form of Islamic psychological therapy and self-transformation. Structured riyadhah practices helped participants connect intellectual religious understanding with profound spiritual experiences. Participants experienced increased self-awareness, emotional control, discipline in worship, and positive behavioral changes. Communicative interactions among speakers, hosts, and audiences created a continuous process of value internalization. The findings produced a transformative communication model based on tasawuf that integrates cognitive, emotional, and psycho-spiritual aspects within digital da’wah, strengthening participants’ faith and reducing the spiritual emptiness experienced by modern society. In conclusion, Tazkiyatun Nafs in digital da’wah effectively strengthens spirituality, encourages self-transformation, and develops more transformative and sustainable Islamic communication. This study contributes to the development of a tasawuf-based digital da’wah communication model to strengthen spirituality and support society's psychosocial transformation in the modern era.

Abstract

The high psychological burden experienced by Indonesian Army personnel necessitates strengthening mental resilience. However, limited research has explored the role of spiritual communication in fostering soldiers’ psychological resilience through direct and reflective experiences. This study aims to analyze spiritual communication, interaction patterns, communication symbols, and spiritual meanings in strengthening soldiers’ mental resilience. A qualitative approach with an autoethnographic design was employed. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and reflective journals. Data analysis involved data condensation, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification through triangulation and researcher reflexivity. The findings indicate that soldiers’ spiritual communication develops through four stages: initiation, internalization, expression, and transcendence. Communication patterns occur vertically between spiritual mentors and soldiers and horizontally through peer support among soldiers. Spiritual communication symbols appear in verbal, nonverbal, and ritual forms, integrating religious values, national ideology, and military culture. Spirituality is understood as a source of strength, a moral compass, a bond of solidarity, and a pathway to inner peace. Furthermore, interactive, ritualistic, and intrapersonal spiritual communication serves as a critical reflective mechanism for renegotiating mental resilience in the face of occupational pressures and military challenges. The study concludes that spiritual communication plays a significant role in strengthening soldiers’ mental resilience through meaning-making, solidarity, reflection, and inner peace. This research contributes to the development of studies in spiritual communication and military psychology while offering a humanistic perspective through an autoethnographic approach.
