Abstract

This study examines the conflict between Aceh and Indonesia through the lens of three theoretical perspectives: primordialism, ethno-nationalism, and constructionism. Using video collections from the Journeyman Pictures YouTube channel, the research analyzes visual narratives of the conflict, including human rights abuses, natural resource exploitation, and political struggles. While it was initially expected that one theory would be more dominant, the findings reveal an interconnection between these perspectives. Primordialism is the most evident in the videos, as Acehnese identity is portrayed as distinct from the rest of Indonesia, reinforced by grievances over economic injustice and military oppression. Ethno-nationalist and constructionist elements are also present, particularly in framing Aceh’s resistance as a response to territorial nationalism. The study highlights the role of elite persuasion in Aceh’s integration into Indonesia, reinforcing constructionist arguments that nationalism is socially constructed. Additionally, the research underscores the significant impact of human rights abuses on prolonging the conflict. By integrating multiple theoretical perspectives, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of Aceh’s struggle and broader discussions on nationalism, conflict, and reconciliation

Abstract

Abstract This qualitative case study investigates the transformative impact of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) principles on the mindsets of the Nkayi community in Zimbabwe. The primary objective is to explore how these principles can shift perceptions, attitudes, and experiences among community members engaged in development projects. Employing an interpretivist qualitative approach, the study involved focus group discussions with 25 community members and semi-structured interviews with 5 social service officers. Questionnaires were responded to by the 25 community members. Thematic analysis was utilized to interpret the data, revealing significant positive shifts in community members' perceptions and attitudes as they engaged in ABCD-inspired initiatives. Participants developed a renewed sense of ownership, agency and responsibility, transitioning from a state of disempowerment to proactive self-reliance. Key factors facilitating this transformation included building trust through small successes, empowering community leadership and fostering genuine partnerships with government entities. The study concludes that the ABCD approach effectively catalyzes mindset transformation, enabling marginalized communities to leverage local assets for sustainable development. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners, emphasizing the need for broader implementation of the ABCD framework in Zimbabwe. The research highlights the importance of documenting strategies employed by the Nkayi community to overcome challenges in adopting ABCD principles, ultimately contributing to the empowerment of marginalized communities and promoting sustainable development initiatives.

Abstract

Urban waste management in Lubuklinggau City, Indonesia, encounters systemic challenges, including limited service coverage, insufficient infrastructure, low levels of public participation, and weak integration between technical regulations and spatial planning. This study explores context-specific strategies aimed at strengthening urban resilience within waste governance systems. Utilizing an exploratory mixed-methods approach, the research integrates SWOT analysis with the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to identify and prioritize strategic alternatives. Data were collected through field observations, reviews of regional regulations, spatial planning documents, and institutional reports. Twelve strategic options were developed from internal and external factors, then organized hierarchically and weighted through pairwise comparison. Findings indicate that the highest-priority strategy involves accelerating the formulation of technical regional regulations aligned with spatial and fiscal planning frameworks (priority weight = 0.229), followed by the development of a controlled landfill system supported by public-private partnerships (PPP) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The AHP model achieved a consistency ratio of 0.054, confirming the model’s logical validity. The study concludes that regulatory reform, cross-sectoral coordination, and community-based initiatives are critical to enhancing the adaptive capacity of medium-sized cities. These findings offer theoretical contributions to resilient city frameworks and practical insights for urban regions facing institutional and environmental challenges.

Abstract

AbstractIn today’s world, waste is perhaps the most significant yet complicated category deprived of a proper definition. For environmentalists, waste as a practice of excess stands for death, whereas for commodity cultures, it represents economic freedom and personal choice. Amid the appeals to save the planet and the tendency to possess and accumulate, the solid interconnections we once had with our waste, have been long forgotten. What we are left with, is a restricted source as the moral motivation for responsible abandonment, reflecting the core of actual crisis. This reality presents substantial obstacles in finding ways to coexist with the waste we’ve neglected every day. The article hence intends to collect nearly everything that modern society throws away and never really looks back. In taking up this as a challenge, I aim to explore how waste, often seen as worthless detritus, contributes to shaping the self and ethical sensibilities. When it comes to waste management, the intention is neither to imply the need for changes, based on fear or disgust nor to alter its apparent negative role into a positive one. Instead, what I do desire is to provide, waste material, the attention it deserves, by considering and re-considering various instances of their crucial generative role.

Abstract

Indonesia's pharmaceutical industry faces critical challenges due to its heavy reliance on imported Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), which account for over 90% of total API use. This dependency creates inefficiencies, high costs, and vulnerabilities in supply chains, particularly during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this, the Indonesian government introduced the Change Source policy in 2022, aiming to enhance local production and reduce import dependency. This study explores the challenges and opportunities for drug formulation manufacturers amid this policy shift. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with four manufacturers and analysis of relevant regulations and secondary sources. Key challenges include high initial investment costs, inadequate infrastructure, and market demand uncertainties. However, opportunities arise from government incentives, increased local API demand, and innovation potential. Findings emphasize the importance of regulatory support, infrastructure development, and market assurance to foster sustainable growth in the pharmaceutical sector. By addressing these challenges, the policy has the potential to significantly boost Indonesia’s pharmaceutical self-reliance, reduce costs, and enhance resilience. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of the policy's impacts, offering valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract

The existence of financial cooperatives is crucial for supporting economic activities, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, the increasing rate of Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) poses a significant risk to their sustainability. This study investigates the Rukun Ikhtiar Savings and Loan Cooperative (KSP RI), which is confronted with a persistent rise in non-performing loans (NPLs). Utilizing a dual approach, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative methods, this study assesses the financial performance and the efficacy of credit risk management at KSP RI. The quantitative analysis found that NPL, Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR), Net Interest Margin (NIM), and Operating Expenses to Operating Income (BOPO) significantly affect Return on Asset (ROA), which highlights KSP RI's financial performance against increasing NPLs. Qualitative analysis using the Five C's credit framework, identified weaknesses in lending procedures, leading to the extension of credit to unqualified borrowers. To address this issue, the study recommends, implementing stricter lending policies with Five Cs framework, enhancing staff capacity through training and utilizing technology to improve risk monitoring. These findings provide insights for KSP RI and other microfinance institutions in strengthening credit risk management and provide a framework for future research.
