Abstract

In Indonesia, Islamic education is still mostly provided through pesantren, or Islamic training institutions. They have a close relationship with tarekat, as they have been successful in maintaining Islam as a personal and compassionate faith rather than a cold and formal doctrine. Pesantrens changed throughout the colonial era from being a largely educational institution to a political organization that backed the independence fight. This article's objective is to look at how pesantren changed from being just educational institutions to considerably assisting in the fight for liberation, as well as how they contributed to the battle against Dutch colonialism. Using academic writing on pesantren that examines their position throughout the colonial era, the content in this piece was found through library research. This article makes the case that Java's colonialera social, cultural, and political protest groups benefited greatly from the pesantren system. It also seeks to explain their founding, objectives, student demographics, and involvement during this time period.

Abstract

Music, in its development, follows social and cultural needs. In the Islamic world, music has long been discussed in terms of how Islamic law regulates the use of musical instruments or listening to songs. From the two opinions that allow and prohibit, Nahdlatul Ulama has long engaged in a dialectic of musical art with religious law through the provision of a platform for both containing and developing musical art. Through the approach of Sufism and historical evidence of the success of preaching through art, religious music, which is a manifestation of the transformation of musical art in the present, has become one of the effective media for spreading Islamic values among children and the general public.

Abstract

This article elucidates the chronology of the insertion of Undang-Undang Penistaan Agama (‘the Indonesian blasphemy law’) in Kitab Undang-undang Hukum Pidana (‘the Indonesian Criminal Code,’ later mentioned as KUHP). The law aims to prevent a religious elements; such as holy books, rituals, saints, etc. from offences. In the postauthoritarian Indonesia, this law has been used to ban individuals and minority groups by religious groups, state apparatus, and politicians. This has caused a dispute and debate in the society because there are several groups most of whom are intellectuals and human rights activists, who consider that the law is against Undang-Undang Dasar 1945 (‘the Indonesian Constitution 1945,’ later mentioned as UUD 45). They have urged the government through Mahkamah Konstitusi (‘the Constitutional Court of Indonesia,’ later mentioned as MK) to remove or revise it. This article attempts to answer the questions of how blasphemy law is formulated and then inserted in the Criminal Code and how it has defined religious freedom in Indonesia. Its aim is to understand the historical aspects of the law and the interpretation of religious freedom in Indonesia. The data of this article were collected through library research (books, newspapers, articles, CDs, etc.) and ethnography (observation and interviews). The results show that the Indonesian government has struggled to locate the definition of religious freedom and tend to be inconsistent in dealing with dispute of blasphemy law. In many cases, it ends in favor with the more powerful voice in public.

Abstract

Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest religions in the world. Islam is a major religion of the world. Both Islam and Zoroastrianism are monotheistic religions. However, both of them are different. Both the religions have different beliefs, set of values, customs, holy book and holy prophet. Even their concept of God is quite far apart. We look around us and some questions pop in our mind. Who created this world, the sky, space, sun, trees, clouds, seas, oceans, and mountains. Who created humans and other living creatures? All these questions lead us to believe that there is an entity a power behind all this, who has created everything. This entity became known as God. Scholars all over the world study and carry research on these two religions. Islam teaches us to believe in one and only God “Allah” whereas in Zoroastrianism in the guise of God a dualistic belief is there. This dualistic belief has been studied very thoroughly by experts and religious scholars. The major beliefs and thoughts and developments in Islam and Zoroastrianism would be discussed here in the light of evidence from various articles. How both the religions influence each other and what are both their perspectives on each other and their ideologies? All these factors would be discussed in this article.

Abstract

This article critically examines how al-Ghazali carries out the process of seeking truth and its contextualization in contemporary Indonesian Islam. al-Ghazali entered a deep crisis because of his doubts about the senses and reason and described this state as "psychological instability". This state is considered to be the culmination of a process of doubt (i.e. existential doubt), which is compared to a disease that has a profound effect on one's being. The article argues that al-Ghazali's quest for truth began with doubt and skepticism of questions he could not answer. Moreover, al-Ghazali's doubt is an intellectual method and approach of critical thinking that aims at purifying knowledge from faults and impurities and at revealing the truth of things. I believe that doubt as Al-Ghazālī sees it is a reviewing of the sources of knowledge and criticizing them again. It is also a critical rethinking of data that are considered implicitly correct in the social and epistemological consciousness, or taken for granted. The views expressed in this article are meant to reflect the religious beliefs of the author. Rather, this article is intended to illustrate the life lessons that can be learned from al-Ghazali's life through the lens of the Hero's Journey in seeking truth.

Documentary studies found in scholarly journals and books form the basis of our qualitative research methodology. The findings of this research 1) The psychological symptoms associated with religion, such as piety, good deeds, and honesty, as described by religious teachings, such as the nature of faith and devotion to Allah. Abstract

The traditional marriage of the Samin tribe in Kudus Regency shows that there are marriages that cannot be registered with the Population Administration. The researcher found that the Samin tribe in Kudus Regency could not register their marriage, thus preventing them from obtaining civil rights. The main reason is that the religious identity on the KTP is written in Islam even though basically they are not Muslims. This study aims to identify the factors that influence the reluctance of the Samin people to register marriages and the village government's efforts to legalize Samin people's customary marriages in the form of registering marriages without involving state officials. This research is a qualitative field research and the data were obtained systematically directly from the field. This research descriptively examines observation data, interview results, and documents. After a thorough examination, it can be concluded that the Samin tribal marriage custom is not considered legally binding in Indonesia because it does not involve a marriage registrar. However, the decision of the Constitutional Court which is identified with Number 97/PUU-XIV/2016 has provided a glimmer of hope for the Indonesian nation by allowing the inclusion of "Belief in the One and Only God" in the KTP religion column. This decision has allowed the Samin tribe to legally register their marriages with the registry, according to their customs.
