Abstract

Abstract

Mass media has a strategic role in shaping the public’s perspective on crucial issues, including environmental issues that are increasingly prominent in global and national discourse. This study aims to analyze how online Islamic media NUOnline and Tajdid.id frame environmental issues through the perspective of Robert N. Entman’s framing theory, which includes four main elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and suggest remedies. The results of the study show that NUOnline tends to define environmental problems as a form of moral and spiritual crisis, with causes linked to weak religious awareness and the practice of exploiting nature. Moral judgment is conveyed through Islamic teachings on the mandate and responsibility of the caliph on earth, as well as solutions directed at strengthening local religious and cultural values. Meanwhile, Tajdid.id frames environmental issues as structural and multidimensional problems, with an emphasis on collective responsibility between religious communities and the importance of public policy. This media emphasizes a rational and collaborative approach in offering solutions. These findings indicate that although both contain religious values as a moral basis in environmental reporting, differences in ideological orientation and communication approaches result in different framing constructions. This study fills the gap in the study of media framing based on religious values and offers a new perspective on Islamic environmental communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines the interplay between religious authority and culture through the lens of sholawat in Indonesia—an event characterized by a fusion of musical and oratorical performances among devout Muslims. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Yogyakarta, Central Java, I demonstrate how institutions and individuals strategically employ artistic expression to mediate both contemporary and historical religious discourses in public life. By exploring sholawat, one gains insight into a facet of modern Islam that is highly accessible, festive, and inclusive of a broad and diverse audience. Within these performances, religious authority is subtly legitimized through what I term a “religious culture of play” embedded in everyday life. Employing Paul Ricoeur’s analysis of enunciative and institutional authority alongside Hans-Georg Gadamer's concept of play, I examine how and why Indonesia’s distinctive Islamic tradition—commonly known as Islam Nusantara—offers a compelling model for the contemporary Islamic world. The article begins by outlining the structure of a sholawat event and the key individuals and institutions involved in its organization. It then engages with theoretical perspectives on religious authority, considering their relevance within Indonesia’s internal Islamic dynamics. Finally, I explore the role of play as an essential element of sholawat as a form of religious art.

Abstract

This study offers an interpretive, semantic, and educational analysis of the story of Moses and al-Khidr in Surah al-Kahf (verses 60–82). It focuses on the symbolic and geographical dimensions of place and its role in shaping the educational and epistemological experience of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). The research adopts an integrative approach that combines classical Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic mysticism, and theories of symbolic space in religious and philosophical thought. The story is analyzed as a sequence of transitional phases in a geographical space that goes beyond physical description, carrying spiritual and pedagogical implications. These stages include the symbolic starting point at the "junction of the two seas," the loss of the fish, the meeting with al-Khidr, and the three events (the scuttling of the ship, the killing of the boy, and the building of the wall). The research shows how Qur’anic geography transforms into a multi-layered semantic space, where each place represents a stage in Moses’ inner transformation, from acquired knowledge to divinely inspired knowledge, and from the logic of appearance to the insight of the unseen. The study reveals that the setting in this story is not merely a background for events, but rather an active educational element that contributes to shaping major concepts such as knowledge, submission, spiritual excellence (ihsan), and epistemic humility. The research concludes that Qur’anic pedagogy is deeply intertwined with its symbolic and emotional contexts and relies on them to form the ideal human being.

Abstract

Abstract

Hadith, as the second source of Islamic law, plays an important role in the lives of Muslims. However, not all hadiths are of equal standing, making hadith criticism essential. This research aims to analyze the hadith about a fly falling into a drink through the approach of 'Ilal al-Hadith criticism to find potential hidden defects ('illah qadīhah) and to analyze its relevance and meaning in the context of modern science. The research method used is qualitative with a library research approach. Data were analyzed through takhrij al-Hadis, dirasah al-Asanid, analysis al-Matn, and istinbat al-Ma'ani. The results of the study indicate that the sanad of the fly hadith is sahih and no 'illat qadīhah was found. Matan criticism shows the need for contextual interpretation. In the context of modern science, this hadith is relevant to scientific findings in the fields of microbiology and medicine, which indicate that flies carry disease-causing microorganisms but also have self-defense mechanisms that have the potential to produce neutralizing substances. This study concludes that the fly hadith can be understood as a signal about the importance of maintaining a balance between disease and antidote, as well as the hidden potential benefits in seemingly harmful organisms.

Abstract

This article explores the controversy surrounding the concept of Nūr Muhammad as the first creation of Allah by examining the authenticity of the hadiths that support this belief. The aim of the study is to reassess the authenticity of popular hadiths used as evidence for the claim that Nūr Muhammad was the first created being, from the perspective of matn (textual) criticism. The research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis and the matn criticism method developed by Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Idlibī. The concept of Nūr Muhammad has been supported by various scholars, particularly from the Sufi tradition. Among them are: ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥumayrī, who compiled and verified al-Juzʾ al-Mafqūd min al-Juzʾ al-Awwal min al-Muṣannaf li Abī Bakr ʿAbd al-Razzāq, attributed to the Muṣannaf of ʿAbd al-Razzāq; al-ʿAjlūnī in Kashf al-Khafāʾ; al-Qasṭallānī in al-Mawāhib al-Ladunniyyah; Yūsuf al-Nabhānī in Jawāhir al-Biḥār fī Faḍāʾil al-Nabī al-Mukhtār; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Kattānī in Naẓm al-Mutanāthir min al-Aḥādīth al-Mutawātir; Muḥammad Nawawī al-Bantanī in Madārij al-Suʿūd; and Abū Bakr Shaṭṭāʾ in Iʿānat al-Ṭālibīn. However, many critics argue that these hadiths are not authentic and contradict the teachings of the Qur'an. The analysis reveals that the hadiths concerning Nūr Muhammad are inconsistent with Qur'anic texts, contradict authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadiths, contain logical inconsistencies, and lack the distinctive rhetorical style of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The findings of this study highlight the importance of a critical matn-based approach in evaluating hadiths related to metaphysical concepts and emphasize the necessity for coherence between hadiths, the Qur’an, and reason in understanding Islamic teachings.

Abstract

Based on the results of the study shows that the importance of building the character of students today, because character education will affect the lives of students in the future. The character building of students is strongly influenced by families and caregivers at Pesantren Roudlotut Thullab Magelang. In shaping the character of students, parents and caregivers work together to supervise the growth and development of children when at home and when in pesantrens. In character building at Pesantren Roudlotut Thullab Magelang, caregivers and all staff carry out a continuous teaching and learning process both through lessons in formal and non-formal educational institutions.  In addition, to shape the character of students is also done by making rules that must not be violated and if one commits a violation, students are subject to punishment, this is done so that students get used to being disciplined and responsible students. Further character building is also carried out by motivating all students, one of which is motivation from families and caregivers of pesantrens. The key to the success of education management in character building through the role of family and the example of caregivers at Pesantren Roudlotut Thullab Magelang is that both have paid attention to POAC (planning, organizing, actuating, controlling).
