Abstract

This article discusses the concept of epistemic rationality in Islamic education and its significance for strengthening religious moderation in contemporary Indonesian Islam. The questions are: (1) How is the conception of epistemic rationality? (2) To what extent is the role of epistemic rationality in Islamic education? (3) How do classical Islamic treasures view the epistemic rationality and its significance for strengthening religious moderation in Indonesian Islam? Afterwards, the theoretical assumption underlying this article is that the strengthening of religious moderation without being supported by epistemic rationality is null and void. This article finds that the passion of reading in Islam processed through epistemic rationality has provided huge contribution for Islamic civilization so that it reaches its golden age. Hence, in Indonesian Islamic education context, strengthening religious moderation must be delivered through epistemic rationality as basic reasoning in understanding religious text and digging the diversity phenomenon in order to avoid radicalism and blind fanaticism. Epistemic rationality must be considered as starting point to build curriculum structure and learning contents that emphasize more on the competency of ‘know-how’ and ‘know-why’ rather than ‘know-what’.

Abstract

This article describes the implementation of local wisdom-based learning in Antawirya Elementary School, Krian, Sidoarjo, East Java. The rise of schools that carry modern concepts i.e. integrated schools, international standard schools in their education has marginalized the local culture of Indonesia. Not only that, the majority of the younger generation has forgotten, not even knowing the local fairy tales and traditional games. In this context, Antawirya Krian Elementary School (SD) has a moral responsibility to develop the concept of learning based on local wisdom. This school rebranded itself as Islamic Javanese School. This is unique because local wisdom is the brand of the school and differentiates it from other schools. Through field research and data collection using documentation, observation and deep-interview, the findings of this article show the local wisdom carried by this school to practice traditional game-based learning and habituation to the local language, namely Javanese. In addition, learning based on local wisdom is able to increase the love of the homeland to learners. That's because the module “dolananku” presents a variety of traditional games that come from various regions in Indonesia. Thus, students know that their country, Indonesia has a variety of cultures that produce diversity.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the practice of integrated learning at a modern pesantren-based madrasa, i.e. Madrasah Aliyah Bilingual, Junwangi, Krian, Sidoarjo. Conventional teaching methods have been inadequate in providing enriching perspectives and enjoyable direct learning experiences. In contrast, integrated learning, which has become a trend in modern educational institutions, promotes a holistic and enjoyable learning experience. The article argues that integrated learning practices effectively help create a comprehensive cognitive framework for students, enabling them to understand and construct interrelated concepts. Through this modality, students are expected to develop the ability to identify, associate, evaluate, and meaningfully use available information. This article employs qualitative research based on field studies, with data analysis including data display, data condensation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the integrated learning practice at this madrasa implements two models simultaneously: the spider-web model and the integration model. Both models are effective and efficient in supporting the integrated learning process in a school within a pesantren culture.

Abstract

This article examined the strengthening of Aswaja An-Nahdliyah’s understanding as an effort to anticipate radicalism for Islamic education teacher candidates at the Faculty of Tarbiyah, Sunan Ampel State Islamic University Surabaya. The type of this article was qualitative with a Participatory Action Research approach and the method of extracting initial condition data and coaching related to Aswaja An-Nahdliyah material as an effort to anticipate radicalism for Islamic education teacher candidates in the fifth semester of the Academic Year 2021-2022. The results demonstrated that strengthening Aswaja An-Nahdliyah provides an understanding of the map of radical groups and movements; Aswaja An-Nahdliyah teachings and attitudes teach religious moderation as a basis for anticipating and avoiding radicalism teachings and attitudes; Aswaja An-Nahdliyah’s teachings are full of religious tolerance, which helps to block radicalism. This issue is very important considering that even though Sunan Ampel State Islamic University Surabaya, as an Islamic university, is not free from radical infiltration, strengthening Aswaja is necessary to anticipate this, especially for Islamic education teacher candidates.

Abstract

This article explores the design and implementation of Gender Fair Education as a counter-feminization of poverty movement in women's schools in Gresik Regency. Based on data from women and gender observers, poverty studies have not paid sufficient attention to the gender dimension of poverty. It was from these data that the expression “women are the poorest of the poor” and the term “feminization of poverty” arose. This article is the result of qualitative-explorative research with a phenomenological approach and data retrieval through observations, interviews, documentation, and focus group discussion. The findings showed that gender-fair education as a counter-feminizationof the poverty movement was designed through the Gender Watch program. It is a women's empowerment program through the establishment of women's schools with gender-fair education materials as the curriculum. The implementation of gender-fair education is manifested through the establishment of women's schools in villages in Gresik Regency. The program like this is important to be replicated in other places as an effort to achieve gender equality and justice.

Abstract

AbstractThis article critically explores how to substantiate the values of the soul in Islamic education using Ibn Sinā's perspective. As a discourse that interests Muslim scholars, the concept of the soul has experienced ups and downs and passed through various endless debates. Ibn Sinā as one of the Muslim philosophers concerned with the soul managed to develop a good conception of the soul that received extraordinary attention and appreciation from Muslim philosophers after him, such as al-Ghazāli, Fakhruddin al-Rāzi, Ibn Rushd, and Western scholars. Using an exploratory, descriptive, and analytical approach, this article argues that the soul is a spiritual substance that inspires the body so that it lives, which then becomes a tool for acquiring knowledge and divine (theological) knowledge. The practice of teaching Islamic education, thus, cannot be separated from the touch of Ibn Sinā's soul element. For Sinā, Islamic education must reconsider psychological aspects to develop students' potential naturally to become perfect human beings (insan kamil).

Abstract

This article aimed to explore the concept of lā ma'būda from the Sufistic interpretation perspective. Lā ma'būda was one of the basic Sufism maqamat that must be passed by the salik therefore they can wuṣūl ilallāh (reach to Allah). This maqāmāt was the keyword in tasawwuf and most of tarekat developed in Indonesia, such as the qadīriyah, syadhiliyah, naqshabandiyah, shattariyah and so on. Lā ma'būda in the tarekat was defined as the activity of self-purification (tazkiyah al-nafs) from all materialism forms, hence he is able to purify his monotheism only to Allah. In the Sufistic interpretation perspective, lā ma'būda was interpreted as ‘nothing is worshiped except Allah’. This interpretation was similar with the terms of Syarī'a in the worshipping process and takhallī in the Sufi maqāmāt. Lā ma'būda or syarī'a or takhallī was the initial stage for the salik to wuṣūl ilallāh. This maqāmāt required an effort to purify oneself from all forms of bad behavior (takhallī) and adorn oneself with all praiseworthy qualities (taḥallī)

Abstract

This paper proposes a pedagogical approach to Islamic education in contemporary Islamic studies. During this time, Islamic Studies in Indonesia tended to be approached with an approach such as integrative-interconnective that connects with the surrounding material row, but less include the approach of Islamic education pedagogy in it. The indoctrination process carried out by scholars so far uses a teaching process that is inseparable from the science of education itself. This paper argues that the Islamic education pedagogical approach should start from the very vital component of education, i.e. teacher since the teacher contributes significantly to the development of students in almost all aspects. Also, pedagogical competence is important to have as a part excellence. This conceptual paper, therefore, proposes and develops a model of the approach of Islamic education pedagogy ranging from philosophical foundations to the practice of Islamic education pedagogy. In this paper, this kind of approach is intended to enable teachers to be agents of change as well as facilitators in providing enrichment of more varied, innovative, and creative perspectives.
