M. Hasyim Asy'ari. There are four focuses in this article: (1) the concept of Islamic education (PAI), (2) the problems of PAI learning through an online system, (3) the ethical values of PAI learning from the perspective of the book of Adab al-Alim wa al-Muta'allim and (4) analysis of the ethical values of PAI learning through an online system based on the perspective of the book of Adab al-Alim wa al-Muta'allim. Abstract

Religious elites have an important role in the democratic system in Indonesia. The involvement of chairmen of Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) in local elections in the context of local dynamics has spawned a network of oligarchic power and dynastic politics. There is an assumption that the participation of the elite of Islamic boarding schools in local politics is considered to be inevitable to the democratic process with the spread of corruption cases, and political nepotism. Actors in dynastic politics use famous figures from the pesantren’s family as a political tool to gain power. Power relations and patron-client relationships in Islamic boarding schools provide great benefits to ensure a candidate is elected in a local election. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relation between power, oligarchy, and the politics of kinship of the elite boarding school in the dynamics of local politics. This article shows that dynastic politics undermined the pillars of Indonesian democracy. Factors that cause oligarchy in pondok pesantren are populism, power network, and tribalism. These factors are inseparable from the influence of patronage, the power of local elites, and the effort of the elite to build dynastic politics. This article suggests that religious elites within the circle of political dynasties are expected to work professionally, not merely using the pesantren family.

Abstract

Islam and blasphemy have repeatedly emerged as the center of Indonesian public discourse and debate after the fall of Suharto. The debate becomes intense in a democratic society when people feel free to speak and deliver their opinions. When their speeches and opinions are regarded to have offences against a particular religion, the followers will protest against them. In Indonesia, these offences can be brought to court due to the presence of the blasphemy law in the Indonesian Criminal Code. Some scholars and religious leaders believe that the law have to be removed because it is not compatible with the principles of religious freedom and democracy. Others believe the law have to be defended because it is needed to regulate religious lives and maintain religious tolerance in the society. This article will investigate the diverse opinions among Muslim activists and leaders from various Muslim organizations including Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah. This article attempts to answer two questions of what are the social and cultural backgrounds of the debates on blasphemy and how religious freedom is defined through these debates in contemporary Indonesia? The data are collected from the document and the recorded video of the judicial review of the blasphemy law in Indonesian constitutional court in 2010 and the interviews concerning the decision of the judicial review. This article suggests that religious freedom is limited by the majority of opinions in favor with the blasphemy law which discriminate free speech and religious minority groups

Abstract

Ibn Sīnā is one of the prominent scholars in the Muslim scientific world. In the West, he is well known as Avicenna. As a polymath, he wrote many books in a broad range of sciences. Al-Qānūn fī aṭ-Tibb (the Canon of Medicine) and Kitāb Ash-Shifā’ (the Boook of Healing) are considered to be his magnum opuses. While the former is his greatest work on medicine, the latter is his monumental contribution to science and philosophy. Abstract

The relationship between Bani Alawi (Ba 'Alawi) and the ulama of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has been documented in many historical records of Indonesia. However, how the relationship started and for what motive is not yet known. In this edition, the editorial team of the Tebuireng Journal of Islamic Studies (TJISS) publishes an edited transcript of a webinar on the history of the relationship between Habaib and NU which was held on December 20, 2020, by the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI), Universitas Hasyim Asy'ari (Unhasy). This transcript is the presentation of Ismail Fajrie Alatas, one of the editorial boards of TJISS, who currently works as Assistant Professor of Middle-Eastern & Islamic Studies at New York University, United States. Alatas has written many academic works in the form of books and journals with a focus on the theme of Islam in the Indian Ocean world particularly, the historical and contemporary connections between Southeast Asia and South Arabia. Alatas’ writings examine the intersections of religious authority, social formation, mobility, semiotics, and communicative practice with a focus on Islamic Law, Sufism, and the Hadrami diaspora in Indonesia (that is, those who trace their origins to the Hadramawt valley of Southern Yemen). In the discussion held in the webinar, Alatas explained that the initial relationship between Habaib and the ulama who later founded the organization of Nahdlatul Ulama was formed as a challenge to the Islamic court-style of “Javanese Islam” that dominated the archipelago in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Abstract

This paper wants to explore the existence and role of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in religious discourse and practice in Indonesia. This research is library research using the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough. The approach of this research is the political approach of Islamic law in Indonesia. Results This study found research findings related to the existence and role of MUI in the process of forming Islamic discourse in Indonesia. The MUI was designed by the government of the New Order Era as a medium of communication between the government and the ulama. The position of MUI in this era is more dominant in its role as "khodimul Hukumah" (government servant) and in the reform order its role has shifted to "khodimul ummah" (servant of the ummah). MUI as a big umbrella for Muslims has played a big role in shaping religious discourse in Indonesia through its products, namely fatwas and non-fatwas. Among the non-fatwa are in the form of tawsiyah, Tadzkiroh, amanah, attitude statements and appeals. Even though the fatwa and non-fatwa are morally binding, politically legal products of MUI products are often accommodated by the government into a legally binding public policy (law). In this context, the MUI has had an influence in the formation of religious discourse through the process of transformation from religious authority to state authority through government public policies.More about this source textSource text required for additional translation informationSend feedbackSide panels

Abstract

Islamic education of Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of previous middle eastern scholars. Sheikh Ahmad al-Qushāshī is one of the middle eastern scholars who influenced previously the thinking of Indonesian scholars, whose students took many roles in Indonesian history. Some of the problems discussed in this study are the objectives, methods, educational curriculum and patterns of teacher-student interaction according to Sheikh Ahmad al-Qushāshī and their relevance to modern education in Indonesia. This research is a library research with analytical descriptive method, with several literature sources examined such as as-Simth al-Majid, Manżūmah al-Tawhīd, and other sources. The data analysis technique used is content analysis initiated by Shelley and Krippendorff. The results of research on the educational thinking of al-Qushāsh are briefly as follows: the purpose of education according to al-Qushāsh is to unite God, and become a pious servant. The educational curriculum is a curriculum based on monotheism which is divided into common, special and very special. The al-Qushāshī curriculum approach has an integration pattern between exoteric and esoteric sciences. The method of al-Qushāshī education is the exemplary method, bai'at-talqīn, al-Ŝuhbah and al-ta'dīb, taslīm, and Ilbās. The pattern of teacher-student interaction has a familial pattern of interaction (teachers act as parents, educators, and student guides), so that his thoughts are quite relevant to the modern era.
