Abstract

Ecological wisdom has become an emerging field in the context of landscape planning and design practices for achieving sustainability and resilience. Several scholars have published empirical research papers in this field, and some have also conducted reviews to explore its concept and framework. However, since the empirical research varies, no study has made a systematic literature review and thus encountered difficulties in determining the research topic and problem. Moreover, the research approach and data analysis method could differ based on study site characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the research topic and problem discussed, site characteristics, and methodology of ecological wisdom studies from 2012 to 2021 by conducting systematic literature reviews involving descriptive analysis, and thematic analysis. The analysis of selected primary studies revealed that recent ecological wisdom studies focus on four topics: exploration, in-depth concept, method introduction, and evidence-based study. Most of the problems discussed in primary studies have focused on acquiring and applying ecological wisdom in practice for contemporary planning and design related to landscape sustainability and resiliency. The characteristics of the study sites were grouped into four categories: sites with unique landscape features, historical or preserved sites, sites with environmental problems or limitations, and sites with high biodiversity. The research methodology developed in ecological wisdom studies uses one or a combination of qualitative, quantitative, and/or spatial approaches involving field measurements and spatial modelling. Finally, the contribution, limitation, and opportunities for future improvements.

Abstract

The shifting of the zoo perspective, from entertainment to being more conservation-oriented has brought positive impacts to environmental conservation. However, it also brought conflict where the need in improving animal welfare contradicted the efforts in increasing visitor satisfaction. This research aimed to evaluate the landscape element of zoo exhibits based on visitor preference as an alternative way to pursue a balance between this conflict. This research was conducted in Ragunan Zoo, Indonesia from 2019 to 2022. Two phases of the questionnaire were conducted during the research. The first questionnaire with a total of 99 respondents resulted that tiger, giraffe, and elephant became the most favorite animals. In opposite, snake, crocodile, and long-tailed macaque became the least favorite animals. In addition, the favorite landscape elements of the zoo’s exhibits were trees, water features, and woods/ log piles; while the least favorite landscape elements were stones, toys (environmental enrichment), and shrubs/climber plants. An in-depth questionnaire was conducted with a total of 37 respondents to understand the preference of landscape elements for visitor satisfaction and animal welfare through exhibit design model simulation. The study found that most respondents showed a positive value on high naturalistic exhibit design for animal welfare. However, the value of high naturalistic exhibits was lower when it comes to visitor satisfaction. It indicated that the presence of trees might reduce visitor’s visibility and overall satisfaction. The result of favorite and least favorite landscape elements slightly varies compared to the first questionnaire. Trees and water features became a consistent favorite landscape element, while toys became the least favorite one. However, the result was the opposite in the shrubs/climber plants element, as in this questionnaire, this element had a positive result in the most of evidence. In the case of stone and wood, the result might vary on animal species and the total area of the zoo’s exhibit.

Abstract

In urban communities, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused psychological and mental disorders. Health workers are most affected and vulnerable to psychological disorders, especially those working at Covid-19 referral hospitals such as the Ahmad Yani Hospital. As a result, psychological therapy facilities or media that can improve the psychological health of health workers are needed. The research aimed to determine the urgency and need for healing gardens among health workers, to know about health workers' perceptions and preferences regarding healing garden design, and make recommendations on criteria and design concepts for healing gardens in the Ahmad Yani Hospital area. The study's methods included the distribution of questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive analysis with crosstabulation and frequency techniques is used. A healing garden in the Ahmad Yani Hospital area is regarded as necessary as a psychological therapy medium for improving the psychological health of health workers. During the Covid-19 pandemic in the hospital environment, 97.3% of participants said they needed a green open space that functions as a relaxation area to improve psychological health, and 94.6% said they needed a healing garden. Colour parameters, materials, concepts, space, plants, plant strata, plant functions, facilities, areas/locations, and healing garden criteria are all preferences for health workers. Health workers' preferences for healing garden design are generally relatively consistent across gender and age groups. A nature-oriented healing garden design is the recommended healing garden design for the Ahmad Yani Hospital area (biophilic design).

Abstract

Purwodadi Village is located in Malang Regency, East Java which has the potential of a very beautiful coastal landscape as a tourist attraction. One of the advantages of Purwodadi Village is that there is a Lenggoksono beach which has natural and cultural potential as a tourist attraction. However, currently the development of the Lenggoksono beach tourism area has not been accompanied by an analysis of land suitability as a tourist attraction. The purpose of the research is to analyze the sustainable land suitability of the Lenggoksono coastal tourism landscape in Purwodadi Village, Malang Regency. The method used is field observation and interviews with the Malang district government. Data analysis is the physical aspect consisting of topographic analysis, beach width, beach type, water base material, beach depth, water brightness, coastal slope, current speed, dangerous biota, fresh water availability, and vegetation. Data analysis was carried out spatially with a land cover approach through a Geographic Information System (GIS). The results showed that the land suitability of the Lenggokson beach tourism area was classified as potential with an area of 10.6 ha (52.8%) and quite potential with an area of 9.5 ha (47.2%) of the total area of 21.1 ha. This shows that the Lenggoksono beach area has the potential to be developed as a sustainable beach tourism landscape by considering the carrying capacity of the area.

Abstract

Emissions can have a negative impact on the Environment and Health. Compounds which can harm human health are sulfur oxides (SOx) nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon oxides (COx), hydrocarbons (HC), heavy metals (Pb) and particulates. These compounds can have bad effects in a densely populated area such as in a housing complex.. This study aims to determine plant species along the main road of Kota Wisata Cibubur, predict the amount of emissions in Kota Wisata Cibubur’s main roads, and to give a planting recommendation which can decrease NO2 emission. The benefit of this research is as a recommendation to the real estate company to give more benefits for the residents in the housing estate in terms of planting the types of plant which can absorb NO2 emission. The research method used is descriptive quantitative method in which the planning process for this research consists of objectives, inventory, analysis, synthesis, and planning. The highest NO2 emission recorded was 85,119.91 kg/year. Emissions absorbed is still not sufficient emough despite after adding plants to the available open green spaces. Therefore, it is necessary to add plants in a radius of 500 m from the main road because NO2 emissions can have an impact on health in a radius of 500 m. Along the radius, there are varieties of ground covers which are garden, built areas, streets, open areas, and moor. The concept for planting in each ground covers will vary. Just like the planting recommendation in the main access road, the plants used will be according to the standard of the plants which can optimally absorb NO2. Plants which are suitable to absorb NO2 emissions and are mostly used are dadap (Erythrina variegata), Ki Hujan (Samanea saman), ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata), and Flamboyant (Delonix regia).
