Abstract

ABSTRACT English is a global language necessary for communication and education. Each language has a unique system of sounds and intonation patterns, and the way English is spoken can differ significantly across the country. In Indonesia, we have another ethnic language, Palembangnese. The objective of this research is 1) To determine whether segmental sounds in students' English pronunciation interfere with Palembangnese as their mother tongue using PRAAT software and 2) To find out the factors causing Palembangnese interference with English pronunciation. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The researcher designed observation as an instrument to collect and analyze the data. However, during observation, the researcher documented the words. Then, the researcher's data was analyzed using PRAAT software. The participants involved in this study were 20 students at Eleventh Grade SMK YIS Martapura school. The results of the research showed from the data that have been analyzed based on the data that have been taken; there are a few words such as /ðəm/, /ˈevrideɪ/, /ˈfɑːðə(r)/, /sliːp/, /laɪf/, /ˈhɪərəʊ/, /ˈhɒlədi/ this indicates interference when Palembang people pronounce the foreign language, that is the English language. There are some words, such as /ˈfɑːðə(r)/, that change in terms of segmental sounds and meaning. The study discovered that learners demonstrated foreign language impacts, including grammatical features and borrowing. In summary, learning a foreign language (FL) alters learners' first language (Ll), implying that studying English influenced their language "Palembangnese." Learning a second or foreign language may interfere with a learner's primary language. Keywords: English, Pronunciation, Interference, Palembangnese Language, Praat Software

Abstract

Rishi Sunak’s speech On October 23 in response to the Israel-Palestina conflict has triggered moslem communities around the world. This is because the British Government has shown their support to Israel. This research aims to analyze the conceptual mapping of metaphors and metonymies found in the British PM’s speech as a style of conveying ideas in showing of their partiality. Data sources were obtained from the text of Rishi Sunak's speech on the official page of the United Kingdom. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. Lakoff and Johnson's cognitive semantic theory of metaphor and metonymy with map transferring is used as a framework in this study. The research findings show that there are about 13 conceptual metaphor data in Rishi Sunak's speech text with the most ontological metaphors found, with 8 data, compared to other metaphors, namely structural with 4 data, and orientation with 1 data. Ontological metaphors in this study mostly analogize abstract war issues with concrete concepts, while orientation relates to top-down spatial concepts and structural metaphors mostly describe the concept of war with other concepts. Meanwhile, the metonymy contained in the speech text largely represents the concepts of "part for the whole", "whole for part", "place for institution" and "container for content". With ontological metaphor and conceptual metonymy (Container for Content) as the majority, the researcher concludes that the news writer has a writing style that involves transferring abstract concepts from lived experience to other concrete concepts based on personal physical experience.

Abstract

Translation shifts are commonly observed in the context of translating literary works, primarily focusing on novels. However, in this study, the researcher examine translation shifts in the context of movie dialogues. the objective of this research is to categorize the various types of translation shifts and analyze their application in the English dialogues of the main character, as translated into Indonesian subtitles in the movie Crazy Rich Asians. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research method to gather and analyze the data. The data were obtained from the English version of Crazy Rich Asians and its corresponding Indonesian subtitles. Data collection involved a combination of observation and documentation techniques. Subsequently, we analyzed the collected data using theory of translation proposed by Catford (1965). The findings indicate the presence of multiple types of translation shifts. These shifts involve alterations in grammar to lexis, changes in the position of heads and modifiers, transformations from phrases to words, and the conversion of plural form into singular forms. This study confirms that translation shifts are not confines to novels but also extend to the realm of movie dialogues.

Abstract

Many students continue to perceive English as a challenging language to master. Furthermore, they often lack confidence and fear making errors. This study sought to evaluate students' speaking skills in English following the implementation of the dubbing method and the use of video learning materials. The research employed a pre-post-test experimental design involving a single group. Data group design methodologies encompass observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis of data is conducted through categorization and comparison, which includes the following classifications: dissatisfied category (AS), moderate category (F), good category (G), very good category (VG), and excellent category (E). The findings from the pre-test indicated that there were 7 students in the US category, 21 in the F category, 13 in the G category, 3 in the VG category, and none in the E category. In contrast, the post-test results revealed no students in the US category, 6 in the F category, 20 in the G category, 17 in the VG category, and 1 in the E category. The positive impact of employing the dubbing method is evident in the enhancement of students' English speaking abilities. This is supported by the pre-test results, which showed students in the US category, a category that was absent in the post-test results. Additionally, no students were found in the E and AS categories in the post-test. Therefore, the dubbing method proves to be an effective strategy in the educational process for improving students' proficiency in spoken English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) in enhancing students' reading skills at SMPN 5 Langsa. This study used a quantitative experimental research method with a pre-test and post-test design on a single group. The population in this study includes all ninth-grade students at SMPN 5 Langsa, which consists of four classes. The sample of this study consisted of class IX-4, which amounted to 24 students and was selected using a purposive sampling technique. In collecting data, researchers used reading tests in the form of multiple choices using descriptive text material. The results showed an increase in students' reading skills. The increase in students' vocabulary can affect the improvement of students' reading comprehension. This is evidenced by the significant increase in students' pre-test and post-test scores. The student’s average score increased from 37.78 (pre-test) to 75.00 (post-test). Furthermore, the results of the paired sample t-test analysis indicate that the Sig. value (two-tailed) is 0.000, which is less than 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Thus, this study shows that the implementation of the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy has a positive impact on improving students' reading skill.
