Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology offers a new environment for English teaching and learning. It potentially improves the English learners' motivation and achievement in English writing skills. This paper investigated how technology usage related to the student's English learning motivation and writing skills in the Indonesian context. This study applied a quantitative method and used the test and online questionnaire as instruments. A pre-test and a post-test were used to find the significant improvement of English writing skills. Meanwhile, the a-ten online questionnaires were distributed to the students to investigate their motivation in English writing. The result shows that technology contributes to the development of the students' competence in the class of English writing as well as students' motivation in English writing learning. Significant correlations were also found between the pre-test and the post-test for undergraduate students. The implication of this study arises for English language pedagogy, especially in the Indonesian university context. The English language teaching especially focusing on writing is not only strengthened from the linguistics outcomes, but also non-linguistics outcomes such as motivation. Then, the pedagogy and technology integration must be considered to achieve English learning goals. Keywords: motivation, English language learning, technology, English writing achievement

Abstract

The difficulties in reading the Qur’an experienced by children with special needs did not receive adequate attention. There is a gap in the ability to read the Qur’an between children with special needs and normal children. This research aims to describe the use of plasticine media to support the learning of Hijaiyah letters for a down syndrome child. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observation and interview. The data analysis included three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results show that learning Hijaiyah letters using plasticine has a significant impact on a child with down syndrome. The three-dimensional letters formed using plasticine media are more recognizable to a child with down syndrome. Before using plasticine, the child could not recognize and pronounce the Hijaiyah letters independently. However, he could recognize and pronounce the Hijaiyah letters independently without assistance after using plasticine. The child's understanding of the Hijaiyah letters also improves. He can differentiate one letter from another, such as noticing the number of dots in the letters Ba, Ta, and Ṡa. Using plasticine media in the learning process can increase the child’s enthusiasm for learning, develop his imagination, and support his memory. Keywords: Hijaiyah letters, media plasticine, down syndrome

Abstract

School closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in learning loss in primary school students, so a diagnosis of the students' numeracy skills is urgently needed at the beginning of learning to adapt learning to students' average ability levels (teaching at the right levels). This study aimed to develop a module that can assist and become a reference for teachers in schools in diagnosing and mapping students' numeracy abilities at the beginning of learning. Therefore, this research was carried out following the procedures of research and development (R&D). Prior to implementation, the developed module was validated by two experts (media and material experts) with validation results in “very good” categories for each aspect of the material, layout, and graphics. The results of the study based on the teacher's response questionnaire indicate that the module developed is very helpful for the teachers in mapping students' numeracy abilities at the beginning of learning after the COVID-19 pandemic and provides an alternative follow-up to the results of students' numeracy assessments. Thus, the developed module is suitable for use as a reference in conducting assessments regarding early primary school students’ numeracy. Keywords: diagnostic assessment module, early primary students, numeracy, post COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Despite being the medium of instruction at all levels of education, English fluency remains a challenge for many Nigerian undergraduates, especially considering English functions as a second language in the country. This highlights the need for effective learning strategies for undergraduates. Hence, this study investigated the potential of Flipgrid, a video-based discussion platform, to improve speaking skills and reduce speaking anxiety among Nigerian undergraduates. The study employed a pre- and post-quasi-experimental research design and selected a class of 25 third-year undergraduates at a university in Nigeria as participants. The study results reveal a significant positive impact of the Flipgrid platform on the participants' speaking skills in fluency, pronunciation and accent, vocabulary, accuracy, and comprehension. The study also found a significant reduction in participants' speaking anxiety post-intervention. The results suggest that the platform not only contributes to skill development but also plays a crucial role in overcoming anxiety related to the student’s oral communication. Therefore, the study recommends the integration of Flipgrid into English language teaching as a valuable tool for improving Nigerian undergraduates' speaking proficiency and reducing speaking anxiety. Additionally, the study suggests further research to explore the long-term effects of the Flipgrid platform on language learning in different contexts.

Abstract

Improving students’ creativity is very important in 21st-century education. One form of creativity is the ability to develop a product. Based on the observation, students already had the potential for creative thinking, but they had difficulties expressing these ideas in a product. This study was conducted to determine the improvement in students’ product creativity in Natural Science learning with the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. The method used was classroom action research consisting of two cycles. Each cycle included three stages, namely planning, implementing, and reflecting. Data were collected through observation notes and documentation during the activities. The results of this study indicate that learning by implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in the Natural Sciences subject can increase the creativity of students’ products. It is evidenced by an increase in student creativity by 24.45 based on the product assessment from cycle I which was 64.44 and cycle II was 88.89. In cycle I, improvements were still needed, but in cycle II students were more creative in preparing tools and materials, making products neater and paying attention to color matching, and generating relatively new and unique product ideas. Keywords: Project-based learning, product creativity, Natural Sciences, classroom action research

Abstract

Students may encounter difficulties when solving basic multiplication problems. They proficiently recalled the entire multiplication table but struggled to locate specific results without reciting the whole table. Those interconnected challenges highlight the importance of implementing comprehensive teaching strategies. This study aims to support fourth-grade students' multiplication skills at SDN 3 Sindangkasih by applying the STAD learning model and finger-counting method. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with both control and experimental groups. Results show that the experimental class's average score improved significantly from 57 to 73 after treatment, while the control class's score increased slightly from 62 to 62.5, indicating no significant change. The significance value of the Wilcoxon test for the control group's pretest and posttest scores is 0.763, greater than 0.05, indicating no significant difference in average scores before and after the class. In contrast, the analysis for the pretest and posttest scores of the experiment class reveals a significant difference in scores (p = 0.000 < 0.05), indicating that the STAD learning model combined with the finger-counting method significantly improves students' multiplication skills. The findings suggest that the finger-counting method effectively supports students' multiplication abilities by providing a tangible and interactive approach to learning.
