Abstract

Managing the feeding program is the most important concept in feeding of wild animals in captivity to maintain their performance, health condition and absolutely sustainability. Since the use of medicine plants show significantly improvement of the performance and health condition of domesticated animals, it sounds promisingly to use such plants for wild animals in captivity, especially for commercial purposes. Due to their properties, the medicinal plants can be classified as appetite stimulating substances, digestive enhancers, bacterial steering agents, metabolic modifiers and odour neutralizing agents, that is called multi-function phytobiotics (MFP). However further studies should be done to investigate an effectiveness-oriented of active components of medicinal plants on the regulation of performance and health condition of wild animals in captivity.Keywords : Feeding program, wild animal, medicinal plant, Multi Function Phytobiotic, performance, health

Abstract

In order to support the new wave of environmental movement in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, so called the logging moratorium and green province, a three months qualitative study has been taken. The study has been aimed to find the recent dynamic of some stake holders those potentially play important role to achieve the green vision. The result shows that the capacity of human resources, and the social-dynamic of post-conflict community becoming a crucial variabels to drive an efficient and effective green movement mission.Keywords: Illegal logging, moratorium, green province, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, social dynamic.

Abstract

Masigit Kareumbi Hunting Park (MKHP) as one of the 14 hunting parks exist in Indonesia has a prospective future. The potency of biophysic area which cover the area, accessibility, topography and vegetation condition can prospectively be exerted. In the other side, there is a tendency to exert hunting sport either for domestic hunters or foreigen hunters is a good chance for MKHP improvement. This research is aimed at analyzing economic prospect of MKHP exertion through the calculation of Net Present Value (NPV), Benefits Cost Ratio (BCR) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). MKHP area has a natural power of attraction like flora, fauna, ecosystem or natural phenomenon to be developed through hunting activity, natural tourism, cultures, research, science and embrio supply for cultivation. Based on the analisys, the main activity for improving MKHP is by setting the plan, enclave relocation, infra structure establishment and the other things which support it. Besides to fulfill the conservation function, the preservation of habitat and population must be greatly paid attention. Two options are done to analyze this, that is through (1) exerting MKHP in the aspect of hunting and ecotourism, and (2) exerting MKHP in the aspect special hunting. The financial analysis shows that the MKHP exertion with the price $ 1.500 and $ 750 for deer and $ 150 and $ 100 for pig (trophy and non trophy) in the rate of 9% from hunting and ecotourism it gains NPV Rp 50.160.631.000,00 and BCR 1,677 (with breeding). But the exertion without breeding it gains NPV Rp 24.955.315.000,00 and BCR 1,476. The exertion through both scenarios is reasonable to do. The exertion from special hunting with breeding scenario is obtained NPV Rp 36.896.371.000,00 and BCR 1,548. The MKHP exertion through the special hunting without breeding result NPV Rp 19.2933690.000,00 and BCR 1,386. Abstract

Indonesia is one of the richnest country in biodiversity, including the higest of diversity of agriculture genetic resources. Tugutil society is one ethnic in halmahera which have well knowledges in used of genetic resouces. Indigenous knowledges on genetic resources of agriculture by tugutil in Wasile, Halmahera is presented. 149 sources of They have been used 149 agricultural and medicinal genetic resources. There are 100 genetic resources of agriculture crop (71 species) they used for sources of primary food, secondary food like fruit, vegetables, etc.) and 49 plant medicinal genetic resources (45 species). Tugutil society has knowledge about how they wise used the genetic resources like not over exploited, local wisdom to conservation their genetic resources from destruction.

Abstract

Sylvery gibbon (Hylobates moloch) is endemic species in western part of Java Island. Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park currently is known to be place of viable population for the species. Threatened on habitat is a primary problem for its conservation. Therefore it is an urgent need to study its habitat suitability distribution. The main objectives of the research are: 1) to analyze habitat suitability of sylvery gibbon (H. moloch Audebert) in Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park using Geographical Information System, 2) to examine of its habitat condition. Result shows that habitat suitability of the species can be accurately predicted by using thematic maps of elevation, slope, distance from road, river, and land cover. Based on our prediction, potential habitat for sylvery gibbon in Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park is about 33018 ha, in which classified as lowest habitat suitability (846.27 Ha), intermediate habitat suitability (12,311.9 Ha) and high habitat suitability (24,624.2 Ha). Most of the suitable habitat is under forest cover.Keywords: Habitat, Hylobates moloch, suitability

Abstract

Despite its large distribution, very few studies have been done on the reproductive ecology of the genus Gerygone, a member of the family of Australo-Papuan warblers. Mangrove Gerygone and Large-billed Gerygone use mangrove habitats for breeding in the Top End of Australia. This study attempted to reveal the nesting success of those species. Both conventional method and Mayfield method were used to calculate the nesting success. The results showed that nesting success of both species was low compared to those of other Australian passerines.Keywords: Nesting success, gerygone magnirostris, gerygone levigaster, mangrove habitat, mayfield method

Abstract

Lhuing the times of the census 1974 - 1981 the Bali mynah population steadily increased, but from 1983 - 1986 it has steadily decreased. At present the population of the Bali mynah is declining at an alarming rate, so it needs a realistic conservation programme designed to enhance the survival of this species. The population decline is related to the environmental resistance, such as : illegal hunting, forest fine, and habitat destruction due to human pressure.

Abstract

Captive breeding of some endangered wildlife species is very important, because the extinction of small population is almost inevitable, therefore, the genetic aspects of this breeding program should be made top priority to be observed. The small population size of any species tend to increasethe degradation degree of heterozygosity as a consequence of inbreeding. Genetic variation and the degree of heterozygosity of natural wildlife population are higherthan those of inbred population (in captive breeding) of the same species.Some inbreeding depression in small closed population as well as in captive animals are describedin this paper, e.g. viability depression, fecundity depression, sex ratio depression. To enhance the survival of a species in captive breeding, some strategies are suggested to becarried out, e.g. to avoid starting a population with animals which are already inbred, to prevent starting a population with related animals.

Abstract

The economic value of sea turtles, their eggs, meats and shells had caused intensive hunting in almost alI over the world. Current protection in Indonesia on sea turtles is still limited on leatherbackturtle (Dermochelys coriacea), olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta), three of the five species existing in Indonesia. Attempts to recover their populations had been carried out in Indonesg, comprising : nesting beaches protection, artiflcial incubation and rearing their juveds in the beaches before releasing them to the sea. The artificial incubation had been successful.
