Abstract

This research aims to identify and to analyze the meaning of hyperbole applied in the song lyrics of Sempiternal album by Bring Me the Horizon. The data were collected from eleven songs within the album. The research applied descriptive qualitative analysis using theory of figurative language by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963) to determine the lyrics that contain hyperbole and theory of meaning by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of the hyperbole. The data in this study were presented descriptively. The result of the analysis shows thirteen hyperboles are found in the lyrics. The meanings found based on the lyrics with hyperbole consist of three kinds, namely connotative, affective, and conceptual. The dominant meaning is connotative as the hyperbole cannot be interpreted lexically.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out (1) the types of code mixing found in WhatsApp Group cargo department by the staffs at Ngurah Rai Airport and (2) to analyse the reason of code mixing found in the WhatsApp Group by the staff at Ngurah Rai Airport. The data were taken from chat of cargo department staff in WhatsApp Group at Ngurah Rai Airport. The method of collecting data was starting from March 1 to 30, 2021. The analysis was done by applying descriptive qualitative method requires documentation to identify the types of code-mixing, purposed theory by Hoffman (1991) about the types of code mixing and the purposed reason of code-mixing theory from Holmes (2013). The result of this study shows that there two of three types that found in the WhatsApp Group cargo department by the staff at Ngurah Rai Airport, there are: Intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing and involvement in a change of pronunciation. The type of Intra-Sentential code-mixing was more commonly found in chat conversations by the staffs on WhatsApp group, who stated that it was easier not to change the language in the cargo world, which primarily used English, to keep it easier for interact and avoid misunderstandings in the handover of their assignments or job desks. Because this research is based on chat messages in a WhatsApp Group, types of involvement in a change in pronunciation can be identified because that type is part of speech. The reason of code-mixing purposed theory by Holmes (2013) there are four reasons, namely: Topic, participant, solidarity and status. Because the relationship between employees provided information about the duties being carried out between divisions, the topic became one of the most common causes for identifying code mixing in chat chats in WhatsApp groups by cargo department staff.

Abstract

This research deals with Pidgin English spoken by Papua New Guineans found in YouTube videos. This study aims to identify the types of sentences in Pidgin English used by the people of Papua New Guinea and the differences between Pidgin English from Standard English. This study uses qualitative methods to carry out a clear and organized description of the problems identified. The data is taken from the narratives of Papua New Guineans found in YouTube videos. Applying Muhlhausler's (1978) theory to analyze the types of sentences used by Papua New Guineans found in YouTube videos and theory by Aitchison (1991) to distinguish between Pidgin English and Standard English. This study finds data based on the first study problem about sentence types such as the equative sentence mi citizen bilong la country 'We are the community on this country,' locative sentence yupela from East Sepik Province 'you are from East Sepik Province,' intransitive sentence mipela i simenim i go bek 'I am comment to return, and ' transitive sentence mi wokim ho na long em 'I am help them all.' The data contained in the second problem of research on differences in Pidgin English from Standard English such as the phonology em planti samting 'there are more,' the syntax so mi makim PNG 'so I marked PNG,' the dispela is lexicon of 'this is/is.'

Abstract

The study is focused on find out the total amount of symbol (emoji) and the meaning of symbol (emoji) that found in the captions of @brianimanuel Instagram account. This study is used theory proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce about semiotic and used semiosis process. This study took the data from the captions of @brianimanuel in his Instagram Post that used emoji from 27 Sept 2019 – 15 Feb 2021. In this study, the writers used observation procedure descriptive-qualitative method for analyzing the data. In addition, for presented the data, the writer used an informal method. This study found there are 73 total amount of emoji and 73 meaning of symbol (emoji) that found in the 55 captions of @brianimanuel in his Instagram Post.

Abstract

This study is focused on analyzing characterization in “Five Feet Apart “movie by Justin Baldoni. This study has two aims, namely 1) to find out the types of characterization and to describe the main character in “Five Feet Apart” and 2) to find out the characterization of the main character realized in “Five Feet Apart” movie by Justin Baldoni. The data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Kenney (1996) and Wellek and Warren (1962). The result of this analysis showed that there were 5 types of characterization from Kenney theory such as Discursive Method, Dramatic Method, Character on other Character, Mixing Method and Contextual Method and 3 theory dimension characterization such as Physiological Dimension, Sociological Dimension and Psychological Dimension.

Abstract

This study has two purposes, those are (1) to find out the types of code-switching used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah in “Daniel Tetangga Kamu” video YouTube channel and 2) to identify the functions of code-switching used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah’s utterances. A qualitative method is used for this study for analyzing the data collected from five videos. The method is applied to give a clear description of the data according to the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) as cited in Romaine (1989: 122) about the three types of code switching. The result of this analysis showed that there was three types of code switching found in this conversation are; Tag switching, intra-sentential switching and inter-sentential switching. Type of code-switching which is intra-sentential switching is the most often used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah utterances because they was more comfortable when using words, clauses, and phrases in one sentence to convey motivational messages. And the theory proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987) about the six functions of code switching. In this analysis showed that there was six function of code switching are; referential, directive, expressive, phatic, metalinguistic and poetic. Metalinguistic is the dominant function of code-switching in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah’s utterances. It occurs because Daniel Mananta and Raline shah wanted to impress the other participants with a show of linguistic skill.

Abstract

This research entitled “Type of Deixis in The Song Lyrics of Ariana Grande’s thank u, next Album”. Deixis is an expression in language that in used to point who to person deixis, where to place deixis, and when to time deixis. The objectives in this research is to find out and identify types of deixis in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s thank u, next Album. Documentation method is used in collecting the data using listening, reading and note taking techniques. Qualitative method is used to analyze the data by using descriptive language for explaining the data. The result of this research shows that all types of deixis are found in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s thank u, next album which include person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis. This research found the occurrences of 550 person deixis (81%), 109 temporal deixis (9%), 7 discourse deixis (1%), 32 spatial deixis (7%), and 19 social deixis (9%).

Abstract

This study was aimed to identify the derivational affixes that can be found in “New Idea”magazine. Specifically, this study was focused on analyzing the types and the process of derivational affixes that were found in the data source. This study used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Katamba (1993) to solve the problem which about the types of derivational affixes. Theory that proposed by Rochelle Lieber (2009) was used to solve the problem about the morphological process of derivational affixes. This study found 427 data that contains derivational affixes. Derivational prefixes were found in 52 data with percentage 12% such as prefix in-, un-, dis- , re-, ex-, en-, and pre-. Then, derivational suffixes were found in 375 data with percentage 88% such as suffix –hood, -ship, -ness, -ity, -ment, -less, -ful, -ic, -al, -er, -ly, -ion, -ish, -ing and –ed. This study concluded that derivational suffix –ly was the most dominant type of derivational affixes that found in“New Idea”magazine.

Abstract

This study aim to analysis types Figurative language and their meaning found in Bon Jovi song lyrics. In every song we can find many languages that contain figurative language because that’s the important element in the song to deliver the meaning to the listener. `The data source of this study were taken from https://w.azlyrics.com/ which consists of several lyrics that taken by the researcher. The data were collected used the observation method. Whereas the descriptive qualitative method was used to analyse the data in this study. The data were analysed base on theory of figurative language by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) and the meaning used the theory by Barthes (1964). The finding of the study analysis 10 types of figurative language base on the song from 2 albums of Bon jovi song lyrics such as 4 types of similes ,1 types of metaphors ,2 types of , 1 type of metonymy ,9 types of hyperboles ,2 types of irony,1 type of allusion 1 type of paradox with the percentage unfortunately, the writer didn’t dead metaphor and Synecdoche in the song lyrics. The types of figurative language contain with the denotative and connotative meaning.

Abstract

According to Trusted (1987), Moral judgment is verbally embodied in statement, sentences that assert that something or is not the case that can therefore be true or false. It can be found in the movie in many genres especially when there are conflicts in the movie. This study concerns with the analysis of one of the moral judgment types: Value Judgment. The data taken from War for the Planet of the Apes movie and they are collected through observation and note taking technique. The theory of Trusted (1987) is used to analyse the value judgment type. The result shows that there are some values judgments appear in the movie and are uttered not just by the main character, but also the other characters in the movie.
