Abstract

The study aims to analyze the types of translation methods in the bilingual story. The data source of this research is Lutung Kasarung published in 2019 which was retold by Lilis Hu and translated to English by M. J. L. Jordon. Qualitative research is used as a research method which describes the data descriptively. In classifying the data, this study used Newmark’s theory (1988) to analyze the data. This study found that word-for-word translation has 4% data, literal translation has 10% data, faithful translation has 50% data, semantic translation has 8% data, adaptation translation has 4% data, free translation has 14% data, and idiomatic translation and also communicative translation have 5% data. It found that faithful translation method is the most dominant applied method which indicates that the translation emphasizes the SL and keeps the meaning of the SL.

Abstract

The study concerns the code mixing found in Deddy Corbuzier conversation in the podcasts.. The objectives of this research are to classify the types and to analyze the reasons of code mixing found in Deddy Corbuzier conversation in the podcasts. The writer analyzed the types of code mixing based on theory by Hoffman (1983: 75) and theory by Hoffman (1991) was used to analyze the reasons In this research, descriptive qualitative is used as the method of the analysis. The data were taken from one video of Chef Juna-Guy? Jahanam? Silahkan. This researcher shows that all types of code-mixing, such as intra sentential mixing, intra lexical code mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation were found in Deddy Corbuzier conversation in the podcasts. Meanwhile, the reasons for code mixing found in the podcasts were talking about a particular topic, expressing feelings about something, and the last, the most dominant one was intention of clarifying the speech for the interlocutor. Some of the reasons were not found data such as, quoting someone words, interjection (inserting sentences filler or sentences connector), repetition used for clarification, expressing group identity.

Abstract

Moral values are concepts that serve as a guideline on implementing our manners, personalities, and behaviors toward ourselves and others. The movie is one of the best platforms to deliver moral values, it makes this study needed because it was found a lot of movie’s viewers only focused on fun things that existed in the movie than focused on the moral messages conveyed in it. The aim of this study is to tell the readers what moral values are, and the types of moral values, and help people in recognizing moral values that appear in the movie. This study used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data and a documentation method used in collecting the data. As a result, there were eleven types of moral values that appeared in Yesterday movie, consisting of honesty, bravery, peace ability, confidence, purity & pureness, loyalty, respect, love & affection, sensitivity & selflessness, kind & friendly, and fair & humane. This finding shows that this comedy movie has many moral values to present.

Abstract

This study entitled “Psychological Analysis of The Main Character as Influenced by External Conflicts in the Movie Entitled “Gone Girl”. It is focused on psychological condition of the character as influenced by external conflicts. The aims of this study are to find out the types of external conflicts faced by the main character and to analyze the effect of those external conflicts that the main character faced to her psychological condition as found in the movie entitled “Gone Girl”. This study used theories from Stantont (1956) and Koesnosoebroto (1988) to find out the types of external conflicts and Bernhardt (1953) to analyze the psychological aspect of the main character. Descriptive and qualitative methods were used to analyze the data while observation methods were used to collect the data. The result found that there are 33 external conflicts and 16 internal conflicts faced by the character and in this study the writer will focused on analyzing the external conflicts faced by the main character in Gone Girl movie that influenced her psychological condition.

Abstract

When writing a piece of art work called poetry, the poets often utilize figurative language to express their ideas and feelings. Figurative language will beautify the poetry of which the readers will put their interests. Typically, figurative language in a poem includes paradox to emphasize the poem’s meaning. This research focuses on types and meaning of paradox in the Rudyard Kipling’s selected poem. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the figure of speech in Rudyard Kipling’s selected poems. The research found 17 (seventeen) of paradoxes consist of 7 (seven) rhetorical paradox, 7 (seven) social paradox, 2 (two) logical paradox and 1 (one) philosophy of science paradox. The rhetorical and social paradoxes are the most current paradoxes in Kipling's poem, according to the research on paradox in the poem. The notion of each phrase to which they belong, as well as the meaning of the paradox, are used to define the interpretations of paradox. In Kipling's poem, paradox was exploited to make lines more colourful, inventive, and meaningful. These are there to bring clarity, colour, and persuasion to the novel.

Abstract

This study discusses about women’s language features that occur in the utterance of the main character from the Falling Inn Love movie. The aim of this study was to analyze women’s language features and the function of each feature that are used by the main character or Gabriela through the utterance by applying the main theory by Lakoff (1975) and Pearson (1985). In conducting the data, this study was using the descriptive qualitative method to organize the description of the data result. In presenting the data this study was using formal and informal methods. It was found nine out of ten features were used by the main character. The most feature that occurs in the main character utterance was lexical hedges or filler (25%) while the least feature that occurs in the dialogue was emphatic stress and hypercorrect grammar (2, 50%). Almost all the features by Lakoff (1975) are found in this movie except precise colour terms.

Abstract

According to Zor (2006), maxim violation that people tend to violate the maxims during the exchange of conversation quietly and unostentatiously when they fail to observe the maxim intentionally (as cited in Al-Qaderi , 2015,pp,80-81). Grice (1989 :28) said that when the speaker does not fulfill or obey the maxims, the speaker is said the violate the maxims. This study concerns with the type of maxim violation that appeared in movie of Death Race Inferno 3. The study aims to analyze the types of maxim violation that found in the movie. The data were taken from the movie of Death Race Inferno 3 that has been downloaded from FlashNet.com and they are collected through observation and note taking technique. The theory of Grice (1975) is used to analyse the maxim violation type. The result shows that there are some maxim violations appear in the movie and are uttered by the characters in the movie. The study concludes that in the movie there are found 15 of maxim violations, 3 violation maxim of quantity, 3 violation maxim of quality, 6 violation maxim of relevance and 3 violations maxim of manner.

Abstract

The study aims to find out and analyze the meaning of every type of figurative language in the song lyrics. Figurative language is a language style used by the writer or speaker to convey a message imaginatively and in a mode which aims to make the reader get effect from language style. The data in this research were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods and based on the linguistic theory that is used in semantics. This study proposes two of problem those are, first what types of figurative language and second what is the meaning of the figurative language used in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics. To get the meaning of those figurative languages, several expert theories were used for this research on the classification and definition of figurative language. There are two theories that were used in conducting this research. This first theory of types of figurative language is proposed by the expert, Knickerbocker and Reninger and the second theory of figurative language and the types of meaning theories by Leech.

Abstract

People usually do imitation of an object such as animals, engine, or other object which produces sounds. This is to emphasizes the words, sentences, or utterances. It also helps to visualize the thing or object being discussed. This such imitation is called Onomatopoeia. This kind of word may appear in a written text, such as comic. This study aims to analyze the fighting type of onomatopoeic words in a comic entitled Superman: The Doomsday wars comic This study used theory that proposed by Elizabeth (2013) to identify the fighting types of Onomatopoeia found in Superman: The Doomsday wars comic. The data were collected by using observation method and note taking techniques. This study is a qualitative method and presented the analysis descriptively. The result of the study shows 29 data fighting types of onomatopoeia that found in Superman: The Doomsday Wars comic. This is because the story of this comic is about a battle between Superman and his Enemy, Doomsday.

Abstract

The study aims to find out educational values and also how those values are reflected by the characters in the movie. The value of educational fosters us into adult individuals, individuals who are able to plan the future and make the right decisions in life. In this life of course having a noble character will look good in the community. The researcher used movie to analyse because when we watch movies, we not only get entertainment but we also get lessons or educational values tucked in the film. This study used theory of Linda and Eyre (1997) and theory of Klarer (1998). This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study indicated: (1.) Educational values found in Trolls movie (2016) are value of being consist of bravely, peacefulness, responsibility, honest. Values of giving consist of religious, tolerance/respect, social care, kind & friendly. (2.) Those values are reflected by the six characters in the movie. Value of being consists of three characters with six data, values of giving is consisting of four characters with four data. Those educational values were presented through conversation and action in the movie.
