Abstract

This study examined the cultural vocabulary contained in Yukie Chiri & Ainu's manga (comic) (2017). Yukie Chiri & Ainu manga is a comic that tells the journey of a girl named Yukie Chiri in collecting Ainu folklore. Using ethnographic semantic theory, this study focused on the identification, categorization, and meaning of the Ainu cultural system through vocabulary related to cultural elements used in the Yukie Chiri & Ainu manga. The study results show several cultural vocabularies used to introduce Japanese Ainu culture, namely the vocabulary of belief systems, types of rituals, ritual means, place names, seasons, and living equipment of the Ainu people. This study contributes to the understanding that this manga not only introduces narratives and forms of folklore such as yukar as cultural heritage but also confirms that this manga also introduces Ainu cultural vocabulary which is the entry point for readers for cross-cultural introductions.

Abstract

Language plays strategic role in advertising, particularly through slogans used in the advertisement. Slogan as one aspect in advertisement summarizes complex brand messages into brief and memorable expressions. This study aims to examine the types of derivational affixes used in commercial slogans and to analyze their meanings and communicative purposes in advertisement. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes seven English slogans taken from seven beauty product advertisements, such as; Nivea, Silkygirl, Garnier, Olay, Wardah, LAKME, and Estée Lauder. These data source were taken by applying purposive sampling method through searching beauty product advertisements in the internet. The data were collected through observation method and documentation techniques by selecting words with derivational affixes found in the slogans. The data were analyzed qualitatively using Katamba’s (1993) theory of derivational morphology, particularly to derivational process using tree diagrams. The findings reveal that kinds of derivational affixes used in the slogans are prefix un- and suffix -ly, -ful, -al, -ic, -less, and -able. The finding shows suffixes are dominantly used with eight (9) data compared to prefix with only three (3) data The study concludes that derivational affixation enables advertisers to construct powerful slogans by applying derivative word to enhance persuasive language therefore future research is recommended to investigate derivational morphology in a larger corpus of advertising slogans across various product categories or digital advertising platforms.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian women political figures are represented in online news media during the 2014 and 2024 general elections and identifies the discursive strategies used to construct their political identities across the two periods. Grounded in Fairclough’s (1995, 2010) three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis and complemented by van Leeuwen’s (2008) social actor representation framework, this qualitative diachronic study analyzes purposively selected news excerpts from Kompas.com, Detik.com, and Tempo.co that feature three prominent figures, Puan Maharani, Tri Rismaharini, and Khofifah Indar Parawansa. Data were manually coded at the textual, discursive, and social-practice levels and compared thematically across the two election years. The findings show that women political figures are represented through four dominant identities – political leader, professional politician, moral figure, and gendered public figure – constructed through five discursive strategies: conflict, performance, gender-based, moral-religious, and achievement framing. While performance- and achievement-oriented framing became more visible over the decade, traces of gender-based representation persisted, indicating an ongoing negotiation between professional political identity and patriarchal cultural expectations. The study concludes that Indonesian online media continue to shape political legitimacy through lexical, transitivity, and framing choices that are simultaneously progressive and gendered, and recommends broader comparative and multimodal research. Practically, the study offers online news media, gender-advocacy organizations, and political communication practitioners a concrete diachronic benchmark for auditing how women political figures are framed, informing more balanced, gender-sensitive reporting guidelines.
