Abstract

This is a library research which aims at finding out the use of media in teaching English is implemented and aims at finding out the use of media in innovative learning to improve students’ achievement in learning English based on literature analysis. The data were collected using investigation technique of discourses from textbooks, articles, journals, papers and other relevant data sources. There are 10 sources in this study, those are: Sutirman (2013), Rahmi (2014), Mudofir (2015), Tanggoro (2015), Muktamir (2017), Nurrita (2018), Hanif (2019), Nurdyansyah (2019), Emilda (2020), and Maru'ao (2020). The researcher analyzed the data by reading deeply to get understanding of the important data from all of the sources. The researcher reviewed to look for similarities or association between one source and another source. After that, the researcher paraphrased and elaborated the statements to give valuable information. The data analysis technique included the process of data identification from relevant literature sources. The findings from the selected data were explained and summarized by where the data are located, how the data are obtained, evaluated, and incorporated into the research presentation. The result of the analysis from all the sources showed that the implementation of the use of media in teaching English to junior and senior high school students and the use of media in innovative learning can improve students’ achievement in learning English.

Abstract

This research deals with satire in Stand Up Comedy Indonesia (SUCI) 8. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of satire which were applied in Stand Up Comedy Indonesia (SUCI) 8 based on Abrams’ and Harphams’ theory and the differences betweeen the use of types of satire to the age group of the speaker on the 10 performances. This research applied a qualitative method. The subject of this research was the “Stand Up Comedy Indonesia (SUCI) 8” and types of satire also the differences that found as the object. The findings of this research shows that there were three types of satire found in this research, they were Juvenalian, Horation, and Manippean Satire. It found 17 utterences consist of satire, there were Juvenalian 5 utterences, Horation 10 utterances, and Manippean 2 utterances. Horation was the most dominat types found in this research. Whereas for the differences betweeen the use of types of satire to the age group of finalist on the 10 performances, it found that  there were no any differences in using types of satire despite the age difference among the finalists. As further recommendation, the researcher is expect there will be another research about analyzing satire in other literary works or the next edition of SUCI.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using mind mapping technique to improve students’ writing ability. This study is a library research and used content analysis method to analyze the data. Of the 5 (five) journals and previous research about using mind mapping technique to teach English, all of them proved the technique to be effective. The findings showed that using mind mapping technique also improves students’ skill in writing aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, and idea organization. Furthermore, the biggest challenge in conducting mind-mapping technique was some of the students did not understand the characteristic of a mind mapping quite well. They wrote too much sentences in their mind maps. Thus, the solution applied by the previous researcher was using a warm up activity that is related to the mind-mapping technique to increase students’ motivation in writing and students’ understanding about the use of mind-mapping technique. Finally, the researcher suggests the English teachers to apply various learning activities and implement mind-mapping technique to motivate students such as using various media and pictures in teaching and learning of writing.

Abstract

Figurative language is a way of expressing language feelings. This research discusses the analysis of figurative language in Banda Neira’s album yang patah tumbuh, yang hilang berganti. The purpose of this study to determine the types of the figurative language contained in the album. Besides, the researcher also explained the real meaning, the message contained in the song and mentioned the theme of each song. The source is taken from Banda Neira's album "Yang patah tumbuh, yang hilang berganti". The research design used in this research is qualitative research with document analysis as a data collection technique. From the analysis that has been done, it was found 40 figurative languages contained in the five songs selected in the album. The figurative language found in this study is categorized based on the Keraf framework (2007). The data found were metaphor (7 data), personification (10 data), metonymy (7 data), allegory (2 data), epithet (8 data), synecdoche (3 data), antonomasia (1 data), allusion (1 data), and hypalase (1 data). Meaning is important in understanding the content of song lyrics. If the listener can understand the meaning of the song, the message can be conveyed. This research can help readers to understand the types of figurative language, especially understanding the meaning and message contained in the Banda Neira album "Yang patah tumbuh, yang hilang berganti".

Abstract

This research is a library study that analyzes how the use of picture books can improve students’ reading ability based on some experts and previous studies. This study focuses on the theory by Honig, Diamond, and Gutlohn (2008) that can be categorized into three activities, which are initial steps, main activities’ steps, and post activities steps. Data collection is done using discourse investigation technique on text books, articles, journals, research papers and other data sources of high relevance. There are 5 sources in this study, those sources are: Dameiyanti (2019), Laraswati (2018), Jusmini (2017), Roslina (2017), and Subekti (2014). Here, the researcher perform the analyses by reading comprehensively to acquire an understanding of the important data from all sources. The researcher analyses to find similarities or relationships between one source and the other. Afterwards, the researcher paraphrases and breaks down the statements to obtain valuable information. Findings from the data selected are explained and summarized by including the name of the researcher, methodology, text type, students’ background, field of study, instruction procedure, learning outcomes, advantages and disadvantages of the technique. The results of the analysis of all the sources  show that the use of picture book can improve students’ reading capability.

Abstract

The textbook is one of the media used in English language learning. A great number of EFL textbook evaluations have been done to find the most suitable textbook for English language teaching. The present study was aimed to determine the suitability of materials in the textbook “When English Rings a Bell” with the criteria of a good English textbook by Curriculum 2013. Besides that, the researcher also studies the feasibility of content, language, and presentation aspects of the textbook. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collected for this study will be gathered from the English textbook “When English Rings a Bell” semester 1 published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The data were gathered by evaluating the textbook using the checklist containing the criteria of textbook evaluation. In the data analysis technique, the percentage of criteria fulfillment was calculated by dividing the total of criteria points that were met in a textbook for each sub aspect with the total of criteria points in each sub aspect. It was then multiplied by 100%. The result showed that the English textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” semester 1 for Grade VII Junior High School has fulfilled the criteria of content, language, and presentation. The result showed that “When English Rings a Bell” semester 1 for Grade VII Junior High School have fulfilled the criteria of a good textbook by achieving the average fulfillment score of 86,36% with the fulfillment of 95% for content aspect, 100% for language aspect, and 86% for presentation aspect.

Abstract

This is a library research. This study aims to investigate the factors that can cause the students to feel anxious in speaking English according to some literatures. Meanwhile, the object of this study is experts’ opinions about factors that made students feel anxious in speaking English. The data of this study are the anxiety felt by students in speaking English. There were 5 literatures as references to collect the data. In collecting data, the researcher used content analysis. First, the researcher found some references such as books, journals, and articles. Then, the researcher read and selected the needed data based on the research objective. After reviewing five references of previous studies regarding factors that cause students’ anxiety in speaking English, the researcher concluded that the are some factors generating anxiety of EFL students; low self-esteem, presentation in the classroom, fear of making mistakes, communication apprehension, test anxiety, negative evaluation, teaching testing procedure, fear of taking risks, teacher manner, and learner’s belief. The researcher suggests students who suffer anxiety here should be able to analyse their own problem in speaking performance in order to find thesolution to decrease it. Another suggestion is teachers should be able to understand students’ characteristics to analyse their problem related to anxiety before finding the way to reduce it.

Abstract

Writing is a crucial skill to have while learning English. Students must be able to write in English. Students at SMPN 10 Banda Aceh still have poor writing skills. Students continue to struggle with writing, particularly descriptive text. This is due to a lack of enthusiasm as well as monotonous classes. As a result, researcher was interested in using guessing games to help students improve their writing skills on descriptive text. The purpose of this study is to see if guessing games could help 7th grade students at SMPN 10 Banda Aceh improve their ability to write descriptive text. This research takes a quantitative approach and uses a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test post-test design. The sample for this study was 28 students from a total population of 89 students. The data was gathered by pre-tests and post-test. From the pre-test to the post-test, the findings of this study indicated a significant increase. This is seen by the increase in the average score from 37.23 to 68.21, as well as the improvement in each indicator by an average of 79 percent. It is clear that Ha has been accepted and Ho has been rejected. As a result, guessing games are effective in improving students’ descriptive text writing skills.

Abstract

Language is a tool to communicate to each other. To make beginner understand about English, they must use media to learn. movie is chosen to be analyzed the importance of educational values as a part of our life. This research discusses the using of Indirect Speech act in Joker Movie from the utterance of the main character. The purpose of this study is to determine the types and the functions of indirect speech acts used by the main character in the Joker Movie. The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method, in which the researcher gathered information from the script and dialogue from the movie, identified the types and functions of the characters indirect speech act based on Searle’s theory, and then draw the conclusions. To focus on the research, the researcher found eight data in his research. The result of this research is the researcher found two types which are declarative and interrogative of indirect speech act used in Joker Movie and there are six functions of the indirect speech act used in Joker Movie there are declare, commanding, condolence, refusal, blame, and promise. Finally, this study concludes that indirect speech act has types but different meaning. Context of situation and social status is really important of the using of indirect speech.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the result of using audio-visual media on writing skills in the experimental class and control class. In this study, the researcher focuses on writing skills that lead to 3 aspects, organization, vocabulary, and grammar. In this study, the researcher used audio-visual media in the form of animal animation videos as a form of treatment. The researceher used report text in the form of animal explanations. This study focused on the use of audio-visual media at SMPN 2 Masjid Raya by using a random sampling technique. The researcher used a population from class 9 with a total of  5 classes and a sample of 2 classes as the experimental class and the control class. The number of students in both classes was 31 students. This study collects data using tests and interviews. The data is processed by descriptive statistics. The results show that the result of the t-test is 10.950 and with df = n-2 or df = 31-2 = 29, the t-table is 2.045. With test criteria tcount from ttable or 10.950 2.048 at a significance level of (a) 5%. This means, there is a significant effect on improving students' writing skills in using audio-visual media. The use of audio-visual media is recomemded for improving student’s writing skills.
