Abstract

Study of diversity Echinoderms (Asteroidea, Echinoidea and Holothuroidea) at the beach area of Osi Island, Central Maluku. Observation on echinoderms diversity was carried out at the coastal areas in July 2012. The purpose of this study is to get information about the cummunity structure of the echinoderm in the Osi Islands coastal areas, Maluku Tengah. Sampling was conducted by using quadrate transect of 1 m x 1 m. The results of this study showed that there were 16 species of echinoderms, belongs to four species of Asteroidea, five species of Echinoidea and seven species of Holothuroidea. The Holothuroidea were commonly found in the seagrass zone. Based on the data from the three sampling tations, Holothuroidea has the highest density among the other observed biota. The quantitative analysis revealed that the highest diversity and evenness indexes of faunal assemblage was found at tation two (H = 1.117; J = 0.974), while the highest species richness was represented by the Echinoderms from tation one (D = 0.079). Generally, all biota found in this study (14 species) prefer seagrass as microhabitat, nine species occupy sandy areas and eight species inhabit seaweed.

Abstract

Sea cucumber Holothuria atra has potential value as raw material for pharmacy industry that has been cultivated in Research Development Division for Marine Bio Industry – Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) since 2016. Disease infections and decreased survival rate are one of the obstacles in in this type of sea cucumber cultivation activities especially during broodstock management. One effort to overcome this is the use of probiotic bacteria. This research aims to isolate and select bacteria that produce protease, cellulase, and amylase enzymes as candidates for probiotic bacteria in the sediment and digestive tract of sea cucumber H. atra. The growth of bacteria from sediments and digestive tract on selective media which added cellulose, starch, and casein substrates was carried out to see the potential of bacteria capable of producing cellulase, amylase, and protease enzymes through the hydrolysis process. The two bacterial isolates that had the highest cellulase and amylase enzyme activity were obtained, namely SSe9 isolates with Hydrolysis Capacity 7 mm index and SAm6 isolates with hydrolysis index Capacity 6.6 mm. These results indicate that the two bacterial isolates have the potential to be further developed into probiotic bacteria.

Abstract

The West Sumatera waters is one of the waters that has a huge potential for fish resources. Many fishing activities carried out near the coast, and fishing gear used in West Sumatra waters is a Bagan. This study aims to determine the relationships between sea surface temperature and Chl-a concentration with pelagic fish catches in West Sumatera waters. The data used were SST and Chl-a in the periode of 2014 – 2016. The variability of SST and Chl-a data was analyzed using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method. This study shows that the EOF SPL mode indicates that the overall value of SPL range is above the average (positive anomaly) with a total variance of 81.24%, while the Chl-a shows that the overall value of variability is at an average (negative anomaly) variance of 70.23%. The results of cross-correlation between SPL and pelagic fish have a lag time of 2.2 months, meaning that pelagic fish predates SST and predominantly occurs in a 6-month period. The relationship between Chl-a and pelagic fish was dominant in the 0.5 year period which showed a gap between Chl-a and pelagic fish catches with a lag time of 22 days.

Abstract

Abstract

Global warming phenomena occures as result of the increase of the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which is dominated by anthropogenic CO2 (carbon dioxide). These conditions cause climate change on the earth. Therefore, the absorption of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere is needed, one of which is through an ocean processes called blue carbon. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of blue carbon absorption (fluxes CO2) in Karimunjawa waters. This research was conducted in the waters around Karimunjawa Island in May 2018. The research method used a survey method with a quantitative approach. Samples were taken at 15 observation stations of Karimunjawa Island using purposive sampling method. Analysis of carbonate system data by titrimetric method. The results showed that most of Karimunjawa waters (13 stations) functioned as source of CO2 with a range of CO2 flux values between 1.79 to 21.64 mmolCO2/m2/day where the flow of CO2 moved from the ocean to the atmosphere. While the other 2 stations function as sink of CO2 where the flow of CO2 moved from the atmosphere to the ocean with a range of CO2 fluxes of -3.69 to -4.41 mmolCO2/m2/day. The pattern of CO2 fluxes followed a pattern of ∆pCO2, DIC, total alkalinity, salinity, pH. The CO2 flux pattern follows the pattern of changes in ∆pCO2, DIC, total alkalinity, salinity and pH. The spatial distribution of potential blue carbon uptake (fluxes CO2) in Karimunajwa waters as a release of CO2 from the oceans into the atmosphere with a positive flux CO2 value.
