Abstract

Speaking is one of the four basic skills that must be mastered by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. In practicing speaking English, there are many challenges experienced by EFL students. This research focuses on explaining speaking skill challenges faced by English as foreign language students in Indonesia. A library research method is in this research. The data were obtained from compiled books, articles, journals, and other literary media as support for this research. The result showed four challenges of speaking skills faced by English as a Foreign Language Students in Indonesia such as mother tongue, vocabulary, confidence, and motivation.

Abstract

This study aimed to find the students’ perception on the use of Google classroom in English online learning during covid-19 pandemic which used a descriptive qualitative method research design. There were 102 students as the subject of this study. This study used open-ended questionnaire to collect the data. The collected data were analyzed by using the interactive data analysis. The result showed that in terms of perception in cognition aspect Google Classroom affect their cognition to positive direction. In affection aspect, Google Classroom brings positive emotional state to the students. In psychomotor aspect, students are negatively affected in the use of Google Classroom. The result found to support and in contrary to theories of advantages and disadvantages of Google Classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to be able to analyze and describe the diversity of speech of Kasta and non-Kasta people in the village of Kenderan. This study uses a qualitative analysis method that can support and continue this research and shows the variety of speech of Kasta and non-Kasta people. The results obtained from this study are 1. Kasta people in Kenderan Village are very active and fluent in speaking. 2. Kasta people in Kenderan village show more verbal skills when speaking compared to non-Kasta people. 3. There are many differences in the language used by Kasta people in Kenderan village during communication/conversation with non-Kasta people. Still, even though they are different, they have the same meaning. 4. There are a variety of words that include a variety of dictions between Kasta and non-Kasta people in the village of Kenderan. 5. There are norms that Kasta people must obey, which is a culture not to speak harshly. There are two theories used in this study, namely the theory of Marshall (1994) and Fox (1974), which relates to the topic of this research

Abstract

This paper aims at explaining how social media Instagram can be implemented in EFL writing competence and critical thinking skill. This paper is library research. The data were collected by analyzing the data information. There are several trending social media applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Line, and Google+, however the most popular application used is Instagram. It provides features that can make both teacher and students enjoying the learning process. Besides, it enables students to avoid their stress and boredom. Rather than that, Instagram can be used to support the four language skills. However, some studies found that Instagram is used for developing writing skill. Additionally, by commenting the uploading photos and videos on Instagram, it can help students in increasing their opinions, ideas, and critical thinking skill.

Abstract

This study aims to identify teacher and students’ preferences of online teaching and learning platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research is library research. The research studies carried out include research that has been carried out from 2020 to 2022. The five studies studied were mainly conducted in Indonesia. The results of this study found that the teacher's preference in teaching courage was to use zoom meetings and google classroom. The results of the study also revealed that the zoom meeting and google classroom were very easy to operate and really helped teachers in teaching boldly. The implementation of zoom meeting and google classroom is very flexible to help students understand the learning material.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the speech acts of the instruction and dialogue found in the tenth-grade of senior high school student’s English textbook; published by the Indonesia Ministry of Education and Culture and to explain out the function of the speech acts. The research is classified into qualitative content analysis research. The data were collected from the directions and dialogues in the English textbook; published by Ministry of Education and Culture. Observation are used to collect the data since the research question was to analyze the types of speech acts used in the instruction and the dialogue of the English textbook and to identify the functions of the speech act base on the context. The instruments used in this research are book “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK/MAK kelas X”, the researcher as the human instrument, and the data tabulations. The data were analyzed by reducing the data, displaying the data based on the classifications of speech acts and drawing a conclusion. The result of this research was that speech acts found in the instruction and the dialogue of tenth-grade of senior high school student’s English textbook were directives as the highest frequency of speech acts (68.23%), assertive (16.27%), expressive (13.92%), commissive (0.78%), and declarative (0.78%).

Abstract

A language is an important tool used by men and women in communicating with many people in society. Many factors influence the way people communicate or how they use languages, such as geography, age, social status, gender, etc. A factor that can create language variation is gender. One of the language variations caused by social factors such as gender gives rise to a term called language features. This study focuses on analyzing the language features used by English Language Education students through WhatsApp Group. The purpose of this research was to answer what types of language features are used by men and women English Language Education students through WhatsApp Group. The design of this research was the descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the researchers used two instruments an observation sheet and an interview. The data were analyzed by identifying and classifying the ten types of language features proposed by Lakoff (1975). The findings showed that there were only five features that have been classified as language features used by English Language Education students on WhatsApp group. Those are lexical hedges, tag questions, rising intonation, intensifiers, and super polite forms. Each features has a function in communication.

Abstract

This research aimed to observe the code-switching at a public place. In the code-switching observed, the researcher describes the types of the code-switching that dominantly occur in the seller and buyer’s conversation. The observation has done at Pasar Banyuasri Singaraja in 61 interlocution and described into several subjects; male and female. The data from the observation was collected using some instruments such as human instrument, audio-recorder, transcription and data tabulation. The data was described using Wardhaugh’s (1998) theory of code-switching. The result of this research shows that there are two types of code-switching found in the sellers and buyers’ interlocution. Those types are inter-sentential and intra-sentential. The result showed that inter-sentential is 41% from the utterances, while intra-sentential is 51% from the utterances. Therefore, the most of dominant type of code-switching observed at Pasar Banyuasri Singaraja is intra-sentential which is come from 527 utterances. While inter-sentential came from 368 utterances. The languages that were used to be inserted and switched are Indonesian, Balinese, English, and Javanese language.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe the implementation of the use of Mentimeter as an interactive learning medium in negotiating text material in class X IBB 1 SMAN 1 Kintamani, (2) describe the effectiveness of using Mentimeter as an interactive learning medium in negotiating text material in class X IBB 1 SMAN 1 Kintamani negotiating text material in class X IBB 1 SMAN 1 Kintamani, (3) describing the factors that inhibit and support Mentimeter as an interactive learning medium in negotiating text material in class X IBB 1 SMAN 1 Kintamani. The data was collected using the methods of observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive-qualitative methods. The subjects of this study were students and teachers of class X IBB 1 SMAN 1 Kintamani, while the object of this study was the effectiveness of the Mentimeter as an interactive learning medium for negotiating text material in class X IBB 1 SMAN 1 Kintamani. The results showed that (1), Mentimeter has been used optimally and received a positive response from students (2), Mentimeter proved to be effective with an average value of 80.00 and (3) there are several obstacles and supporters of the use of Mentimeter. Based on the conclusions, suggestions submitted to other researchers are expected to conduct similar research but with different concepts so that more theories are found.

Abstract

This research aims to develop audio-visual media in the form of videos as learning media using the Kinemaster video editor application to assist students in learning and improving English vocabulary skills during online learning. This study uses Design and Development (D&D) method proposed by Richey and Klein (2007). The students of SMA Negeri 1 Ubud in Gianyar Regency are the subjects of this research. The data collected in this study used four instruments: an interview guide for a teacher, questionnaires for students, document checklist for tenth-grade senior high school syllabus and expert judgment. The score given by the first expert judges was 72, the second expert judges was 85, and the third expert judges was 80. The expert judgment results analyzed using Nurkancana & Sunartana (1992) formula. The developed learning media categorized as good learning media. Thus, the learning media developed using Kinemaster could assist students in learning and improving English vocabulary skills during learning online.
